Up for auction is a pup from my Musa rubinea. It is the larger pup in the center-left of the picture. While this species has been around for a few years, it is very rarely available anywhere. It was just officially described by Markku Hakkinen in 2008. My plant seems to do better in partial shade. It needs a pretty well-draining medium also, as I had problems with the apical meristem rotting out after getting close to flowering size. That hasn't happened since I repotted it into a really fluffy mix (sunshine mix px-3 and perlite). I never had a problem with the corm rotting though, so new pups would always come up. I also keep it somewhat on the dry side (but not bone dry!). I still haven't had a flower, but the two large pseudostems in the picture should flower very soon (hopefully!).
Shipping is $6.00 via USPS Priority Mail. I will separate the pup and ship once payment has been received. USA ONLY PLEASE!
This is a serious collector's item!!! Go ahead and try to buy one online somewhere, LOL. According to an article I read, the habitat is now threatened as well, so cultivation may be the only future for this attractive little Musa. Closely related to Musa mannii in the Rhodoclamys section of Musa, it should also have some degree of cold-hardiness (but I honestly haven't tested it).
There are only a small handful of people in the USA with this species. Here's your chance to be one! Good luck.
I will accept money orders, cashier's checks, and Paypal.
Thanks,
Frank
