I was making my twice a day plant check and had my camera on me. I did not even know this little guy was there until I loaded my pictures onto my computer. I think he was drinking from that water droplet. So after I noticed him I had to crop it and play with it a little bit. Thought I would share. So post yours too for me! :)

I've had praying mantis' in my yard for years
I usually look for them & find them every year
Didn't have as much time to look this year
I've seen them out front & out back
Every year when I cleanout my gardens I look for their egg sacs & save them

Dave, what do their egg sacs look like? I don't want to destroy any if possible. I really like praying mantis, I have always thought they look like little aliens. And they always look like they understand what you are saying, the way they turn their heads.
John, I am not so sure I like one dragonfly eating another dragonfly. :( Still a beautiful photo though!
Steven, I used to have two tarantulas, but one killed the other so I didn't think you could keep them together. Are yours living together, or just together for the picture? Great picture by the way. I don't think I'm so keen on the thousand legged. Do you handle it and is it poisonous? I mean even I can be creeped out, and that one does it, so I guess you win! HA! HA! :ha:

Jananas Bananas,
They were co-habitating for a few weeks during breeding season last year. It's not usually a good practice of housing two tarantulas together( a few species are an exception), being the opportunistic predators they are.
Not a centipede fan? They are for looking only. Any animal can be handle, it's not within my comfort zone. Venom is mild(large wasp sting), the mechanical damage by the mandibles is the tough part. They bite many times before fleeing or getting flung across the room. I've been good so far, 40+ species of inverts and no bites or stings.

Unfortunately, they were probably wasp eggs. Wasps put them on catepillars to give the new wasps food. I took the eggs off & made a pet out of the catepillar. Wanna see what kind of moth it turns into! It's looking & acting real healthy now!
momoese
11-02-2009, 01:57 PM
Eric , does it have a horn on the end? It looks kinda like a Tomato Horn worm.
"A natural predator of the tomato hornworm is a tiny beneficial insect called the braconid wasp. This wasp lays its eggs inside the hornworm. As they hatch, they eat their way out, killing the hornworm in the process. It's a bit off-putting to see this creature on your plants, but you're better off letting him be and letting the wasps do their job. Once they hatch, they'll be enough braconid wasps to keep your garden hornworm free."
john_ny
11-02-2009, 02:17 PM
It's funny that the two postings, above, (Eric's & Ja Nan's) are one after the other, because they may be related. Eric's picture looks like a hornworm; there are several, like tomato hornworm, tobacco hornworm, etc. A parasitic wasp lays eggs in the body of the catepillar. When they hatch, they chew their way out, and attach their little cocoons to the surface of the catepillar. If you Google hornworm, horned moth, hawk moth, etc., you can find lots of pictures.
I usually have some Mandevillas, in the garden, for the summer. Ocasionally, I'd get some seed pods, but not every year and, usually, not very many. Then I read that they had to be pollinated by a hawk moth. If you look at a Mandevilla flower you, right away, don't see any reproductive parts. They are way down deep in there, so you would need something with a long proboscis, or tongue, to reach them. I guess we don't have very many hawk moths around here, hence the sparcity of seed pods.

That is an American Snout Butterfly. The snout helps the butterfly camouflage on twigs by looking like a petiole and the wings the leaf.

COOL! Yeah, Eric is very likely correct on that...caterpillars are in the larval stage of growth and are incapable of laying eggs till they reach maturity/adult stages. So those definitely aren't the eggs of the caterpillar....so I kinda feel sorry for it. Looks cool, though! Well, that or it's just his Halloween costume....he was going as a sheep this year :ha:
He was going as a sheep this year!?!?!!!! :ha: ROFLMAO!!
Seriously, (soon as I stop laughing about the sheep thing) Thanx for all the Super info, guys! Will check that stuff out some more, for Sure! It was found near the tomato arbor & we were growing LOTS of tomatoes this year so that makes sense! Nice to know we got some of those wasps around, hope there are more eggs somewhere. Think I'll keep a close eye on this thing - to see what it turns into - then relocate him somewhere in the south Pacific ocean! Don't need to be taking risks cause I totally Luv fresh tomatoes :) !!
Awesome looking catepillar, though, just wish it didn't like tomatoes, too.

I have a Nikon CoolPix 8700D, which is an 8 mp automatic camera the size and shape of a DSLR - it was the camera that Nikon put out when they were figuring out how to configure the new 10 mp DSLR. It has an excellent macro-adapted lens, but is just about useless for telephoto. To get many of those shots, I had to meter and pull focus on other subjects, then move the camera over to the bugs to get the shot, which was more than frustrating....
If I had a million dollars, I'd be getting the new 10 mp DSLR and a good macro lens, and then I'd be able to pull my own focus.

I think this is a gecko. I have a ton of them that come out at night. This one was out in the daytime though. I think they are really cute.
I like that long skinny one. Occasionally I will find a black, purple, and blue salamander. They are really quick and never get a picture of them though.

I'll need to get a better pic of these
I was working weeding the veggie garden area yesterday
Kept hearing a noise, didn't sound like a biord...so I was looking for a frog in the ponds
Well today clearing out the back 40' along the fence I found a bird nest in a bush
I had to hold the camera out at a weird angle to get the pic & of course a leaf blocked it
I have yet to see the mother bird
But have heard her going to & from the nest
They are blue eggs w/brown speckles
From looking online looks like they are probably just a sparrow

Ya I was saying that because my neighbor (the beekeeper) who is out of town had to remove all of his bees because some african ones started to move in. We think now that another bee persons queen escaped and must of gone to this tree.
LilRaverBoi

If bees feel their current home is too crowded, they will build several special queen cells called swarm cells, supercede cells or sometimes just queen cells. After the queen lays an egg in each, the young are fed a special diet (I think it's called 'royal jelly' or something similar) so they grow up to be queen bees. Once they are mature and hatch out, the several queens fight/sting each other till there is just one new queen surviving (actually it's pretty dumb for any of them to fight/sting one another since even if they 'win' the battle by stinging the other queen they still die LOL). Anywho, then the worker bees divide up and the new queen takes half the hive members off to find a new place to start a hive. This is the 'swarm' seen in the pic. The original queen continues to lay eggs at the original site.
Sorry for the honey bee lesson...I used to have a couple hives at my house when I was growing up that I took care of. It's kind of a hassle to prevent swarming. You have to check through the brood chamber once a week to remove any of the special queen cells you find so they don't swarm and run off with half your worker bees.
Here's a picture of what the swarm cells look like:

I have been dragonfly lucky! This one is the most beautiful I have ever seen. The colors are absolutely incredible - turquoise, purple, bright lime green, orange, black! To me I think this is a once in a lifetime thing - and on a banana leaf! The shots without the flash aren't as crisp, but they really show off the colors. I was afraid the flash would scare him off, but it didn't. They are more detailed, but faded the colors out.

This butterfly was pretty big so I had to take a pic of it! I wish I got a pic of the hummingbird in my yard yesterday because it was the first hummingbird I have EVER seen in my yard. I couldnt believe my eyes when it quickly flew in and then out of my yard. Its stayed for about 5 seconds, but this one butterfly was here for at least 10 minutes roaming around the yard.
Here it is resting on my cat palm probably drying off its wings after I accidentally got it a little wet with the hose.

I have seen praying mantis in my yard every year for 3 years now and I was getting worried because I havent seen one at all this year until yesterday. It liked my hibiscus last year but this year it likes to hid near my mandevilla. Im not sure what they like about my yard but they are welcome since they eat a lot of pests.

This Cicada killer moves incredibly fast even with prey! It partly flies while it runs and I was told it was trying to get to a high spot to launch from and get back to it's nest. It finally crawled up my leg and onto my head before it took off. But it was almost impossible to get a still shot.
Also, a butterfly.

Yesterday in the garden as I was watering the 'nanners' I happened to notice all the honey bees flying around my basil plants, and among them was the largest bee I've ever seen. It was as fat as the black Hawaiian bumble bees I've seen, but it was longer. It was easily 3 to 3 1/2 times the size of the honey bees, and had similar markings, but were a little lighter colored.
Today, I took my camera hoping that one would show up again. I was not disappointed. In one photo, there are two ordinary honey bees together. I wanted to get a shot next to a monster bee for a size comparison, but they didn't get too close to the monster bees. Maybe next time.
I watched for a while to see if it was one of those insects that looks like a bee, but preys on them. These were going for pollen just like the normal size bees. They weren't aggressive toward me as far as I noticed, since I was able to get pretty close to take the pictures. Normally I have bees flying all around me when I trim the Basil, and they never sting, but I didn't want to push these big fellows too much until they get used to my presence.
Here is one flying around the Basil blossoms.

Beautiful shots everyone!
I really don't know what this bee looking thing is, but he is cutting circles in my rose bush leaves and was not even caring that I had the camera that close to him (that is not a zoom shot)!

First time I've seen this one here too. It is a tiny little wasp, not much bigger than a large ant. It was drinking water off the bougainvillea. There were three of them flying around these.

Anyone know if this is a moth or a wasp http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=44391&size=1and the name of it. It looks like it only has one wing on each side. We just lost a very pretty Moon Flower vine and am having hard time determining what did it as there are no bugs or caterpillars around.
thanks

Nice picture. Noah! I haven't nailed it, but this is similar:
Orange Spotted Tiger Moth 1 - ? sp. (http://www.oocities.org/brisbane_noct/OrangeSpotted.htm)
The last sentence says they look like wasps.
Can you see through the wings?
John it looks like yours is a katydid:

The vine we lost is the Moon Flower, which is the opposite of the morning glory. It did a complete job of eating the leaves. Pic tomorrow.

... about 8" long.
This one wintered over in the greenhouse instead of her "usual" place; under the compost pile.
She's lost & regrown the end of her tail, making her easy to distinguish from her buddies.
