View Full Version : Walking on tiled roof, what are to avoid?

Below is a photo of part of my roof, the water flows as the arrow indicates. The large amount of water during heavy rains always overshoots the gutter, drenching the ground below. In years past, I had no plant of value in that spot, so I didn't care if a puddle would form there. Now, I have a Musa Zebrina in that spot, and this cannot be allowed to happen anymore. Forecast calls for 50% rain Tue and Wed this week. I need to get up on that roof and add an extension part to the downspout to direct it somewhere else. I've never gotten up on the roof before, and am not sure where to walk. Is it safe to walk on the convex or concave part? Also, the spout is round, all the extension parts I see at HD or Lowes are rectangular! What's up with that, they don't make round parts anymore?

Thanks,

You should be able to find a supplier under "rain gutters" in the yellow pages. Also, check with a real hardware store. Home Depot and Lowes are just convenience stores with their own products -- giant 7-elevens if you will.

Thanks for the late night reply. What about walking on there, convex or concave?

Can't you use a piece of dwv pipe. Can you lay down some boards to distribute the weight. Also I see there is a piece of flashing that is there to stop the water from going over the gutter maybe if you extended it.

I'd go out and pop that zebrina out and move it and put it back when you get the problem fixed myself....

I'm with Tony...I'd just extend that piece of aluminum that's already on there so the water hits that and slows down. You could also extend the far side of the gutter upward so it catches the water better. You should be able to do this from a ladder without ever having to even worry about where to stand on the tiles.

That piece of flash is very loose, don't even know why it's there. I can easily pull it out. I think I'm gonna try to attach another piece of aluminum to it, and fasten it somehow to the gutter. Thanks,
