Does anyone know the name of the yellow one salty dad posted. I had one 3 years ago and lost it to a frost, but want to find another one. After doing some research the closest name I can find to it is hibiscus "hula girl" but it doesnt have a red center.

Great pics everyone. I have a few hibiscus (most of which arent very impressive now) but If I can find some old pics of them from the summer I will be posting.

I have 5 different tyoes of hibiscus but only know the names of two (tye dye wind and double peach).

To Ja Na - The picture of the Fire & Ice that I posted was one that I took at the Florida Nursery Growers show. It was in a grower's booth. I think they only sell wholesale. However, I'll look up the name, and maybe you can contact them, and ask about distributors.
There also was one growing at my hotel, but it was not in bloom. When I mentioned this to the woman in the booth, where the picture was taken, she said that the problem was that the hotel didn't feed it.

Yes, the lantern hibiscus is easy to grow. It's just like the others, gets the same kind of bugs, etc. It will get big, my original plant is now about 5-6 feet tall, but has been pruned many many times to be that size. I don't know how big it would be if you planted it somewhere it liked and let it grow. I'm thinking lilac bush size. It blooms sporatically, in flushes like a brugmansia.

Its the totally bare sticks. Only one of my hardy hibs is still green (slightly). When it too succumbs I'll cut them to about a foot for neatness sake. This one is my oldest red. I brought it down to my folks as a gift when I was living in NY, so it's around 15+ years old.

jeffreyp
12-20-2009, 05:47 AM
It seems the tropical kind is sterile as I have never seen seeds in them, but was curious if you could take the pollen from it and fertilize a rose of sharon to produce something of interest?

lorax
12-20-2009, 10:21 AM
Theoretically, yes. It would depend on your tropical hibiscus though - many of the cultivars are sterile. If you could get your hands on honest-to-susan H. rosa-sinensis that wasn't a cultivar, it would be more likely that you'd get seeds in a cross.

I don't know how he does it, what he polinates, etc., but all the ones that I have been posting were bred by Curt Sinclair. He must have some plants that are not sterile/he must get seeds sometimes.

Jeffrey - the fancy tropical hybrids are often triploid and thus sterile (just like bananas). Which is why I said that you'd need to be looking for honest-to-susan species H. rosa-sinensis to be sure of getting seed set.

Beautiful pics. My hibiscus are just starting to bud now and most are still lacking some leaves. My double peach is going to be the first to bloom for the summer and it should open fully by tommorrow. This bud survived an entire winter indoors with aphids attacking it and most of the leaves came off and then when it was taken outside in mid march a frost got to it and killed all the rest of the leaves off but for some reason not this bud. Now the bud gets a chance to show off. Im surprised that it actually grew to full size since it was under so much stress which adds to the fact that double peach is my favorate hibiscus. I think Double peach is one of the most willing out of all my hibiscus to bud, but most of my other ones now do have at least one or 2 buds forming.

Heres a pic of it as of a few minutes ago (sorry for the bad quality)...

The other one I do not know the name, but it is a special one from my sister - she just cut off a stick and stuck it in the dirt and ShaZam now it is blooming for me, so I just call it Carrie's Hibiscus. This is the second year I have had it and it is the first bloom. It was late in the afternoon when I took this shot so it is starting to close.

OK guys, I, like Sherry, must own up to my mistakes. One in this thread was that I incorrectly called the hibiscus shown below Purple Magic. It is actually Her Majesty, as I rediscovered in removing leaves, etc. from the base of the plant. It is still blooming and setting buds in spite of the number of frost nights we have had. Mea culpa!

Astounding..!Yug Do you have any name or info? Thanks

Yug
11-16-2010, 08:46 PM
Unfortunately, no. I acquired it from a friend that grows 'Hono hono' orchids, and since these are not his specialty, he never kept track of where he got it, or what its varietal name was - if it had one.

The main difference I saw with this one (which might give a clue as to its name) was that it did not have the dark disc in the center that many hibiscus show.

Any of you folks ever hear of a 'Pagoda' hibiscus? It is a typical red with normal size petals, but instead of a typical staminal column, you have the stem of another smaller version of the flower. Then, where you should have the staminal column for that bloom, you again have the stem of another smaller flower. That bloom has a short, normal appearing staminal column. The effect is three successively smaller blooms stacked on top of each other. I've heard that there are some around, but have yet to see any.

I sure wish Hibiscus had an aroma; that would make them damn near perfect in my book. My peach single is blooming today. Have to wait until night temps are at least in the 50's before they can go outside. Many also need pruning desperately; they've become quite leggy. I'll prune when I move them on to the patio.

Now that I'm contemplating pruning these leggy guys, anyone have any suggestions? From what I've read, it's not a big deal as long as I leave a length of at least three nodes on the branch.

A bloom for today (I sure wish these would last longer than a day!).

Actually, there are some native Hawaiian hibiscus that are scented. They usually have white blooms with a red stamen.

I picked this one up in the airport in Tenerife,

From September to may I nurtured it indoors near a very light window.

The color is really nice, red is my favorite but acts more like a Daylily so I was disapointed. I wondered how it would make out in -13C in the garden..

...It did'nt, even though it was in a tube to try to protect from frost. I never thought of cutting it down...pity.

Slugs?
Snails?

Keep it watered and use Nemitodes or slug pellets.

I have the most natural slug killers in the Universe...birds. Attract birds too saltydad.

I've looked closely and can't find any slugs or snails; my lettuce sure had them. I broke down and got a systemic Rose and Flower combo- fert, disease and insecticide. Applied it and then it poured for 2 days, so it sure should be in the root zone by now! Hopefully it'll work.

Picked up a new tropical hib at the HD. No variety label, but it's a pretty pink and white. I'll try for a pic.

No. Damnedest thing I've seen in a long while. I was shocked the first time I got both blooms. Blue River II is supposed to have the pure white blooms, and that's what I bought!

Thanks- I'll pass your comment along to Mom.

A double orange Rosa sinensis, variety unknown, This was a bargain, that I got in a local supermarket. A standard (single stem, like a little tree) in a 10 inch container, for $12.00. That's about half the price of Home Depot, or Lowes. Nowadays, with the fuel surcharges, (44%, a couple of weeks ago) I probably could not have gotten it up here from a Florida grower for much loess, and when you bring them up on the truck, you have to buy a load of them.
