Many descriptions of banana plants say they are wind tolerant, but are there certain kinds of bananas that can stand up and handle the wind better than others!
I am planning for next spring and I need a type of banana that can take the full sun...but most importantly...take the wind! Any suggestions will would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Generally speaking the dwarf bananas are wind tolerant inasmuch as that they are less likely to be toppled by wind. As far as the leaves shredding though there isn't much that can be done about that. A banana plant with thinned leaves would shred less but beyond that I can't say. I've got Dwarf Cavendishes here that have survived 70mph winds

Sweetheart and Dwarf Namwa are especially stout varieties.

Definitely Rajapuri is a very stout plant, and so is Goldfinger, Dwarf Red and Sweetheart.

Raja Puri is the most wind tolerant. I have some that went through 3 hurricanes in south Florida where all other varieties cracked in half with the wind.

None, where I live. Doesn't matter what it is. They all get hacked up by hurricanes and the usual 60 mph front associated storms. BUT. The dwarf cavs do make out better than the others, orinoco, saba, ornata, zeb, bords, others I forget.

I'd have to say that if there's one cv. out of all, that Rajapuri would be it. I've measured a trunk of 46" around and only at 6 1/2 feet tall to the top of the phytostem when pushing an inflorescence. It's the single most difficult musa I've had to budge as well when I've tried to move part of a mat, as it's the deepest rooter I have.
