:nanadrink: What's up banana people! I innocently planted 2 banana roots with little hope that anything would grow. Well that was 2 years ago. Now I have to figure out how to winterize 6 or so giant banana trees! So far so good. I just need to find out what kind they are, and how best to store them. I'm located in St. Louis Mo. so they won't like staying outside. Last year I dug them up and brought them in. They only weighed about 50 or 60 pounds then. This year, I'd have to knock a hole in my roof to do that. So I'm off to cut them down. :(

Hi Mojorocker!
It would break me to have to chop them too.
Post some pictures of them before you chop them...
maybe we can give you an ID on them!
Welcome! ~Cheryl
Welcome aboard, Mojorocker :) ! For starts, ya Dont have to cut them down. You can store them dormant, laying on their sides. I've been storing 12-14' tall Blue Javas that way for 3 years now & they're Very healthy! It's easy:
Just cut off all but the upper 2 or 3 leaves. Dig them up (usually about 18" away from the base and about 18" deep - to get lots of roots). I put mine in pots of dry soil laying near a sunny window & just leave them there till spring. When ya plant them in spring, they'll put on new leaves & look Super!! (But dont water them or feed them while they're in storage). You will need to store them at about 45-65 degrees F.
Anyway, it's a very friendly & info-packed site. If ya have any questions about using the forum, just ask.
Enjoy!
