Hi All!
I've been on a walkabout on the 'Net looking for info on (colored) bananas.
Eric loves the color orange & my kids like the idea of colored bananas & wanted to know if/how they tasted/smelled/were different from Standard grocery bananas.
So just for starters, I found this...
Orange:

The orange ones are rich in Carotenoids!!
Feel free to contribute!
Sites with pics make it more fun for the kids if you can!!
Thanks! :) ~Cheryl & the Kids

Sweet...hopefully you are speaking about Fei....this is truly a magical fruit.
I will work on my notes and upload a couple more videos..in the interim there are three you tube Fei Videos that we took while in Moorea.
Follow the link:
http://www.bananas.org/f2/french-polynesia-8724.html#post85090
After the video plays...scroll along the bottom of the You Tube window to play the other videos.
If you have ever smelled fresh juiced wheat grass...that is what they smell like (as you peel them).
In French Polynesia they are always referred to as "Bananas To Cook", by the rare Islanders that Speak English.
Following is quoted from post 24 of http://www.bananas.org/f2/french-polynesia-8724-2.html#post87901:Fei are a type of banana that grow in and around Polynesia they are well adapted to that climate able to withstand the severe heat and long dry spells that some times plague many inlands when you cut them they bleed red sap its vary pretty but staining the fruit is Orange in color just about all us want a plant I think they would do well here in NV but there vary hard to come by no on seems to be able to get them
here is a link to a nice discussion on fei

The last person I know of that grew them in the continental US was Bill Lessard (former owner of Going Bananas and author of "The Complete Book of Bananas") in Homestead, FL.

The orange ones are fei's and there are many kinds. I have a freind who has been in contact with the people in Pohnpei trying to have some imported but it's been very tough so far. He's been talking to people around the world actually and has many leads but so far has not been able to get them here. It's still a work in progress though and we have not given up hope. There are some here in the states with more than one grower but I can't reveal any info about those. There is another source but lot's of red tape and that goes with them including not sharing or selling any pups.
Fei is #1 on my want list! It may prove very dificult to grow here though, only time will tell.

Even some differences between ordinary store bananas and plantains ... fry a sweet banana, and fry a plantain. The plantain will be a beautiful deep yellow color.

I remember Pisang Raja (its flesh) has a slight orange color and pineapple aftertaste. AEAE also is orange fleshed.

Incredible! :D When I joined 2 months ago, I thought all bananas were yellow or green. But I was checking Kaczercat's thread about his Red Kru banana plant and learned about the Musa Velutina from a member that just joined yesterday. This is definitely my second favorite banana color [red]. My first will be blue if I can find one! :D
