Hello Banana Buddies:

This thread will be a spot for myself, and others, to post shots of their pets. I will start with my little budgie, which some of you already know...

This is Henry with his little plastic friend , "Tee Tee". Actually, he thinks it's his baby, and he feeds it pieces of regurgitated food, as you can see in the 3rd shot...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/DSCI1268.jpg

Thought the second shot was funny - just the stance of him and the look on his face. I tell him all the time he has a fat little pot belly!...

This is his cage on wheels, to show how spoiled he really is...

Michael is a double yellow headed amazon.

The hawk showed up one morning at my wife's studio in down town Charleston. She is a birder and suspected that he was a young hawk as she walked out her door on top of them for the photo.

We think he is about 20 years old. He says hello, hello Michael, pretty boy, ta ta ta, and a lot of understated phone call conversations. He also hollers in such a way that you ear drum rattles.

He is a stereotypical Latin male. Hot Blooded, Macho, passionate.
He fights me, but adores my wife.
He loves arguments--Bill O'reilly,
He loves passionate love songs/ live football/sports commentary.
He hates bananas/loves plantains(fried).
He loves pecans/toast/mayonnaise/kiwi/orange.

Thank you HollyBerry Lady! Two of the "girls" were rescues, Risky and Farrah. Lexi and Farrah are 10, Sassy is 21, Risky is 22, and Lema is 28. Farrah was skin and bones when I got her and now she is a bit on the chunky side. I think the older girls look pretty good considering their ages. Here is a picture of Lema since she wasn't in a group shot. I've had her since she was 3 years old.http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=24869&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=24869&ppuser=5614)

How endearing, to hear that you rescued those gorgeous creatures from neglect or abuse (usually one of the two, or both), Jananas Bananas! Thank you for looking out for God's animals - I love people who love animals, and who protect them.

You have done a terrific job, nursing them back to health - they are lovely. Their names are cute too.

Everyone should feel free to post as many shots as they want of all their pets - you're not limited to just one, or a couple. By the end of this thread there will likely be tons of shots of my spoiled little Henry.

Speaking of which, here he is this afternoon...

We were looking around for a Pom puppy and my wife called me and said this family had one left but it was born crippled. They said they were thinking of putting her to sleep. I said go get her right now. She weighed .7 pounds. Such a love bug. I had to make ramps so she can go outside and into the living and dining room since they have steps and she can't jump.

Took these shots of him yesterday morning as well, while getting him up. He was pretty resentful that I got him up a little bit early, like I said, and I knew he was building for a squawk session to teach me a lesson.

Sure enough, I was right, and shortly after these shots were snapped he proceeded with a series of bomb dives at my head, while squawking as loud as he could!!! These little tantrums are not uncommon with Henry, when he is displeased...

Yep, I know all about those parrot tantrums  !! Dingo gets Real annoyed if ya get in his way while he's climbing around on the bamboo arbor... he aint just noisy, he snaps & bites!! Totally Luv Lop Ears :) !! Buttons looks real cute, need more pics of him!!

Thanx JaNan :) !! Think Sprix'd definitely go with "handsome" LOL!! For anyone else who's curious, "Katze" is german for cat & "jammer" fits cause she Luvs to get up on the Boise radio & turn up the volume with her paw LOL!! So, Katzenjammer (also the name of a very old comic book character).
Sprix was easy too! He aint soft, in fact, he's tough as a brick but he's Real spry! So I did "Spry" & "Bricks" and came up with Sprix :) !!
Here's a couple of little guys who aren't exactly pets but I have picked them up several times to get them out of the way... Guess they're kind of "outdoor" pets :). Since they're usually out at night, I call them Deimos & Phobos (after the moons of Mars, Luv Sci-Fi) !! The one with the most gray hair is Phobos:

What a cute pic, Eric!

Glad you like my mom's bunny, Buttons. Him and Henry are real good pals. My mom lives right next door, so thay see each other daily. Henry jumps on Button's back and preens him. Buttons is always smelling Henry and Henry lovingly pecks at his nose. It is absolutely adorable.

When they're together, Henry walks around on the ground with Buttons and plays with him. My mom and I got the pets at the exact same time - so they were raised together. In fact I bought Buttons for my mom as a gift. She picked him out.

We need to take some better shots of Buttons, but here is one more...

I am glad our pics are cheering you up. I waited 4 years since my last cat, a persian name Cream Puff, died of kidney failure, before I got Henry. I loved him beyond words. They are like part of the family and when they are gone, the loss is great. I understand.

Since he left I have somehow became a 'cat person'
I found this next girl outside a few months back.
She is now the love of my life
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2447/4101165253_9b9d2f04a1_m.jpg
When she found me she had just laid a litter(never found and most likely never made it)
She was malnourished weighing only 6.5lbs
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2791/4101166871_83931ed4d3_m.jpg
The vet told me she was about a year and became pregnant as soon as it was physically possible.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2667/4101163663_5995d9b083_m.jpg
She has since bulked up a little maybe 7-7.5lbs now.
she lives inside mostly now with 3 dogs and 4 other cats.
Here are some of the old geckos(sold due to a move =[)
This is a Blazzin Blizzard(Leopard gecko)

My first geckos ever
Two normal phase (Leopard geckos)
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2765/4101926186_7eee83a7f0_m.jpg
Next are 3 baby Tokay geckos(Gekko Gecko)
At time of pic they were most likely only a few weeks old.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2771/4101926548_0fe0a9cfbc_m.jpg
They grow extremely fast, and unlike most geckos these guys are everything but friendly. They are also my favorite geckos.
Here is one at 9 months old(Male)
He still had a few months more of growth and is most likely around a foot long now.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2612/4101171905_dd5db57972_m.jpg
I will be picking up a hand and half more, after I build a tank for them.
These guys are Flying geckos. I had 3 for a very short time.
They all died due to my ignorance. (You live you learn)

This next little guy is full grown and is a Pictus or Panther gecko

And last =] here are some Koi and goldfish I think 22 total

Carlos! Cant believe ya got cats nappin with a dog! Awesome! Great bearded dragon & totally Luv Geckos! I had 2 pet skunks (at different times). Jasper got hit by a car. He was all black except for his headtop. Spinkey just got out & guess he couldnt find his way back home. They were outdoor pets, friendly but wild. Also been feedin 2 possums. They're outdoor pets, too. Here's shots of Flower & the mama possum. Havent named her but the 2 young possums are Castor & Pollux. Caster has more gray fur.

You should see the picture of the black cat laying and sleeping literally on top of the dog!
Does the skunk on possum get along?
I see skunks around here, but not nearly as much as the raccoons and possums. I see deer daily and nightly. I have been trying for as long as I can remember to befriend one. Any advice?

The raccoon and possum no long visit due to me no longer feeding them(had a run in with 3 dogs and a possum in a cat hut.
Possum got injured but I was able to pull the dogs off in time.
Since then its just not worth the risk ya know.

Hi Carlos :) ! We had a Chow for a short time but it got vicious so we had to give him up. Since there's no dogs here, now, it's pretty safe for other animals! Would Luv to see a pic of a cat layin on a dog! Wish I could help with the deer but I've never been close enough to one to know much about them.
Can tell ya somethin about skunks, though :). When ya call a dog, ya make a clicking sound with your mouth. That's fighting words for a skunk & can get somebody sprayed, LOL! Also, skunks only come out at night. If ya see one in daylight, watch out, it may have rabies! Best to get rid of any that ya see in daylight cause most cases of rabies are caused by skunks. The ones I believe are safe, though, are easy to be around. I just move slow & make a soft whistling noise. That's a mating call for skunks - Not that I'd ever go that far LOL Deluxe!! But it will, at least, keep ya from getting sprayed.
I'm a little wreckless but:
Stay clear of skunks, they're major rabies carriers!
Rabid ones will also attack! Oh, and they're not good climbers cause they have dog paws.
Know something else, too. For outdoor "wild" pets, never feed them pet food with toluene or BHT in the ingredients. Both are Very toxic & Very hard on the liver. They can kill a wild animal. Ya probably already know that... but just in case.
My best advice on deer is, probably, just to stay Real still till one comes up to ya and sniffs ya. Will get some pics of the racoons when they show up. They never come around much till winter.

:goteam: HENRY TALKS!!! :goteam:

Turn up your volume if you wanna hear better, or use headphones. He's seems to be over his fear of my new camera now...

This video is only just the beginning, but here's Henry chatting to his little baby bird he calls "tee tee". He starts out by making his classic whining sounds and then giving him a kiss and making a couple kiss sounds followed him blurting out "hi little pea pod" which is a cute name I call him, then he quickly says "hi little bird boy" and next a quick kiss sound and then "cutey little pea pod".

He says something really fast after that I can't quite catch, but then next he starts talking about my mom's rabbit named Buttons, and you can hear him say "cute Buttons" followed by "he's the bunny" then "C'mon little Buttons" and then something about "ok" is the last thing he says and then he just chirps at the end a little bit...

YouTube - MOV00060.AVI (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syXYH28tYbU)

He often adds his own words to sentences and mixes things up, so he doesn't always just repeat things either. He is highly intelligent and he's even capable of what they call "appropriate response" where he's answered both my mom and I with correct answers. He counts to six too and he makes a "caw caw" sound like a crow! He mimics my giggle and says "don't you be naughty" a lot also.

Hope you guys enjoy this little clip of him, but this is nothing yet. He can say so many more words and sentences than what you heard. I'll show more later...

She's so well trained. The first night we had her here last year, I feed her per instructions as she was having some tummy problems. When i filled her dish and put it down for her, she just kept looking at me. Poor girl was quivering to get to the food, but I forgot the word for her to allow her to eat. Finally remembered, said 'release' and she devoured it in 20 seconds. She's a real smart and sweet dog.

Linda what a gorgeous dog - a harlequin great dane right?

No, actually he is what we call "Fehlfarbe", a color that is not accepted by the breeders. On this photo he is only about 10 weeks old, so I should show you some current pics...

My first Great Dane Rino (2000-2010) has been a real "Harlekin". I went to several conformation shows with him. Nowadays I`m not interested in these shows anymore, so there`s no need to stick to "accepted" colors.

Beautiful animals everyone! I love all of them so much! Let me ask all of you bird owners, how do you keep them from pooping all over when they are free ranging? I know they make birdie diapers (they make diapers for chickens too believe it or not), but I see no one here uses them. Do you just let them do their thing and clean it up or what? I always wanted house birds, but that was always a draw back for me.

It has been exciting around here this morning. I have four new baby chicks hatched out in the incubator, and one egg is pipping! :woohoonaner: I wasn't expecting them until Thursday, so I had to rush around preparing a little brooder for them.

My Henry only poops in his cage because I trained him to. He's a very good little bird because I put the time in to teach him how to act. He rarely ever bites either. ;)

Is that difficult to teach them? How do you start? ~J

The Hollyberry Lady
01-11-2011, 11:58 AM
I did a lot of research and plus got tips from my vet but basically it starts with praising the bird when he poops where you want him to, and showing disapproval when the bird poops in a spot you don't.

Using treats can be effective for showing approval and verbal praises such as "what a good boy". When the bird poops in an inappropriate spot, you can show disapproval by saying in a firm tone "No Henry" (or whatever your bird's name is) and putting the bird back in it's cage for 10 minutes.

Even though you feel like a mean old goat when you're doing it...it really can work to curb bad toilet manners. :ha:

It takes time, patience, & perserverance, but eventually the bird will go potty where you want him to. Henry has accidents sometimes but for the most part, he's well trained.

Do some research and talk to your vet JaNan like I did, and then you can choose a method that's right for you and your bird.

Good Luck.

Well normally flemish giants are known for their incredibly docile laid back attitudes. Well mine has an additude problem and will try to charge you barking and growling. Yeah i didn't know rabbits could bark or growl either, until I got her lol As pissy and she is she is insanely spoiled. Here's Henry's bath today as I was getting it ready for him...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/100_0680.jpg

He enjoys the water pump and it attracts him to his new glass pool. Plus it makes a nice bubbling brook-like sound, hearing the water splash back down into the bath...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/100_0728.jpg

Of course he likes to test the water and take a little drink first...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/100_0684.jpg

Here's when he noticed the camera and that I was trying to sneak shots of him...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/100_0710.jpg

He's always on the move so it was tough to get good clear shots of him. All his bird friends from the cage are placed around the bath too, so he thinks the whole flock is taking a bath! :ha:

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/100_0707.jpg

In this shot he was crouching down to take a drink of the water again...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/100_0708.jpg

Here he's deciding if he should get off the ladder and get into the pool...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/100_0736.jpg

I had to put the camera away because I took this shot just as he was about to flutter down into the water. He started splashing everywhere.

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/100_0688.jpg

Sometimes, it's so adorable, because he wiggles his little bum just before sitting right down on top of the pump and the water shoots up the side of him! It's hilarious. He also likes to put his toes over the hole of the pump too so the water shoots in different directions! Too cute.

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/100_0736.jpg

He also like to put his toes over the hole of the pump too so the water shoots in different directions! Too cute.

Oh you should get one, Greg!!! :goteam:

Take your time picking one when you go to buy your new little bird. If you want one that chats a lot, pick a male. See how blue Henry's cere above his beak is? That's how you know he's male. Females have a light brown or beige cere. Even the young fledglings show color in their ceres. If you pick one with a dark blue cere, it should turn out to be a boy. ;)

I watched Henry in the cage with about 10 other birds for a long time before I chose him, and noticed that he was very social and seemed like he had a friendly disposition. All the other birds seemed to like him. He was also very active and healthy looking but smaller than the rest. I was drawn to him right away.

My aunt has a budgie named "Willie" and he's all different colors...green, yellow, blue, white, turquoise, etc. He's gorgeous, but he's naughty! :ha: He hasn't been trained like my well behaved little Henry has been.

"Sprite"....that's too adorable, Greg! I bet he was something! I love birds and I never realized how truly amazing they are until I got Henry. Did you know that some budgies have lived to see 25?!!! I sure hope my Henry does. He'll be six in July. :D

I will take my time. What kind of cage does he sleep in ? Or does he sleep in a cage ? I really like his bath its so cool. The male birds are more colorful too. Yes they do live along time.

Wow that is a great link, Greg. I'm gonna check it out some more...

Henry is spoiled and lives in a mantion of a cage called a Chalet, meant for a large parrot. It's on wheels and it opens at the top so he can have access in and out, plus there's a large door...

Oh I'm excited about you getting one. Then you can post pics of him. :goteam:

Let them clip his wings at first so you can hand-tame and train him. They grow back within 4 months but he'll be able to get real used to you in the meantime. Some people keep their wings clipped permanantly, but I think it's cruel. :( Like if thay want a stationary pet...get a dog or a cat! :ha: Birds are meant to fly.

Good luck getting your new little fella Greg, if and when you decide for sure.

Great shots of your pets everyone! I'll have to take a pic of my dog and post it here. She has such a personality and rarely barks (usually only for food). She loves the winter in the yard because she walks on the pool cover, but she wont go near the pool during the summer. She does like to lay out in the sun though during the summer and she goes next to a warm window during the winter. But she also loves the snow and she will go out of her way to walk in the snow.
Some people are against having pets, but once you have one, you really cant imagine life without them. The right pet really makes life so much better and happier!

Woops I think I missed this post until now...sorry about that, Greg! ;)

Yeah, Henry is as spoiled as they come. I can't even go to a petstore without dropping at least 30 bucks on new toys, treats, and things I think he'll enjoy. He knows when I come home with a bag for him too and he gets super excited, pacing back and forth on the top of his cage, then flying and landing on my head so he can be involved in seeing what's inside the bag when I open it.

I even got him his own bird jungle gym! He had it when he was a fledgling but he still uses it sometimes. It's packed now but I'll show it when I move. It's got a climber/ladder thing on it and he hangs upside down like a bat! :ha: He stares at you while he's upside down too, to make sure you see him. He's every much a clown and a show-off. :D

Here he is this evening at the aero-garden. I love how his little belly feathers look like they've been combed! He does this himself with no help from me...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/100_0997.jpg

Of course he had to give "Tee Tee" (his baby) a little reassuring kiss before munching on some of my tomato leaves in the aero-garden! He makes the kissing sound and everything. It's too cute...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/100_0995.jpg

He kept saying "Tee Tee go bye bye" and then kissing him. It was tough to get the shots because I was laughing so hard. :ha:

This is my daughter's 3 year old Chihuahua-Terrier mix, Zoe. We've been pooch sitting her for a week, so I guess she is part ours for the moment. Every time she encounters another dog, she adopts the Alpha-female dominant posture - tail straight up like a flagpole. She doesn't seem to realize she is so small! She is so agressive she backed up my sister-in-laws full grown border collie - in his house, no less! I always thought dogs were territorial on their home turf. She is merely curious about people, never aggressive.

(btw... - someone once told me that budgerigar in the Aborigine tongue means - good to eat - don't tell Henry :ha: )

Here is Zoe checking out my camera.

This might be one of those 'ya had to be there' kind of stories but it's too funny and cute not to share...

Recently, I grew my fingernails really long, but I haven't painted them in quite a long time so Henry is used to just seeing them plain and natural looking, even though they got really long...

The other day, I painted them this shimmery metalic midnight blue color and thought they looked pretty funky and cool...until Henry got a look at them!

At first, I didn't know what was wrong with him and couldn't figure out why he kept squawking and flying away from me when I put my finger up for him to jump onto. He normally steps right on and thinks nothing of it, but he was acting afraid of me and he had wide saucer eyes full of fear and concern.

I finally clued in to what was wrong and why he was so timid of me. It was my blue nails! To put it to the test, I wiggled them at him and he just totally freaked out, screaming loudly and flying all over the place. It was really dramatic and funny. It got to the point though, where he wouldn't even eat from my hand and he was avoiding me like the black plague! :ha:

I got him used to them though and just kept showing them to him and telling him "it's ok"...which is what I say to reassure him when he's scared and he understands. He's mostly fine with my colored nails now but even today he was acting a bit skiddish, because I repainted them this morning.

Wonder what he'll do when I paint them red or something really bright. This blue color is kinda dark. We'll see...

:ha: Too funny Sherry! Poor little guy, he thought some alien dark metallic blue monsters had attacked his Momma's fingers and he didn't want them to get him TOO! Can't you just imagine him thinking that when you stuck your finger up for him to get on. Oh yeah, fingernail polish stinks too! He could smell that smell even when you couldn't! :ha:

The Hollyberry Lady
06-26-2011, 04:47 PM
Too hilarious, JaNan! :ha:

He really was afraid of them and I didn't want to upset him but now he's mostly cool with them. More suspicious now, than fearful. He'll hop onto my finger but he keeps his eyes on my nails to be sure they don't try to attack him! :ha:

I hate those super smelly nail polishes and I buy the ones that are way less offensive smelling. There are ones that are more expensive but they aren't so strong smelling. Yuck!

He notices everything new and even if I do my hair differently, he'll stare at me curiously. He saw my blue nails right away and freaked! LoL!

Thanks for reading and commenting. ;)

Hope the photos come thru ... my first time trying them.

The first is my baby girl, Cassie. She is 11-1/2 now and having a little trouble getting up these days, as she has had hip dysplasia since she was 7 mos. old and a bad stifle for the last 2 years. The surgery is they do for the hips is wicked, so a lot of holistic methods, permanent acupuncture & research I did has kept her from it all these years. I've held off on the cruciate surgery as well, since they say it is so easy for them to re-injure it and, so far, she's been doing fairly well on just meds for it.

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=43919]http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=43919&size=1

The tiger kitty is my Chloe girl ... she was diagnosed with cancer last year and I was told I'd have her for about 2 mos. more. Here it is, 1-1/4 years later, and she's still with me. I have to give her "kitty chemo" about every 5 days or so, but I'm thrilled to still be able to share my life with her and would miss her crazy antics terribly.

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=43920]http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=43920&size=1

The last one is Ben, my "gray ghost" -- he was terribly abused before I rescued him & real fear issues. We have gotten to be great buds, but he got the nickname because no one that comes over ever gets to see him, as he's hiding. It's apparent that the previous people put him in trash bags and shut him in drawers for starters ... and apparently abused him often. When I first got him, if you were looking directly at him, he was convinced that meant you were heading over to hurt him in some fashion. He did not know or respond to physical touch in the beginning, but now, he gets little drool balls around the corners of his mouth when he's getting a good face scratching and he gives the best "rubbin' lovin'" around my legs when he's feeling lovey or waiting for his food bowl to get filled.

Oh Greg, he's absolutely adorable!!! I love his name! What a cutie-pie. You are going to have so much fun with him. I noticed his cere is bluish...a good sign he's male! :goteam:

Just know that you've got a little parrot there and he's capable of repeating a whole sentence! It's never too soon to start teaching them but you gotta be patient and know they're shy at first about talking and need a lot of encouragement and constant repeating. When you're out of the room, sneak around the corner and listen, because at first he'll be embarrassed and shy to talk in front of you and will only do it when you're out of the room.

When he does say his first words...make a huge deal of it and repeat what he says over and over again so he knows how much you approve. They love songs and whistling too, and he will never take his eyes off you. They watch you like a hawk. Offer him some chicken and peanuts are a favorite but you have to chew them up a bit for him first while he's still a little guy.

What a sweet little baby you've got there, Greg. I love him already. His coloring is gorgeous! Thanks for showing him...little Pineapple. Enjoy your fledgling and congrats!

The Hollyberry Lady

If you get two, they will be close partners and not so involved with you, but if you just keep one he'll think you are his flock and he'll try to mimic and be around you more. He'll go out of his way to impress you instead of a 2nd bird. If you're around a lot, he won't need another bird anyway. You'll be enough.

Did they clip his wings so you can hand-tame him?

It's normal for him to be scared. Let him be, for three or four days. Keep talking to him in a reassuring voice and tell him "it's ok baby". Get a sheet and cover half the cage to make him feel more secure. Too much visual stimulation can be very scary for birds. Keep him in a quiet area where there isn't a lot of traffic.

He's gonna be just fine now that he has you. With toys and lots of stimulation and interaction from you, he'll forget all about those other birds. Offer him a bath each day, even if he doesn't take it. In time, he won't be skiddish and will copy the way you are.

They are natural clowns and once he figures out that he's the 'Pineapple' of your eye :ha: he'll start showing off like you wouldn't believe.

Enthusiastic encouragement is what they love and when you're talking to him and teaching him words...pronounce them VERY clearly and articulately so he can hear how it's being said. Don't mumble or talk too softly...he needs to hear and watch the way your lips move so exaggerate the words a bit so he hears all the syllables.

Oh you are going to have such fun...and so is he. :goteam:

They love outdoors but keep him out of the sun and make sure he's in a secure cage and can't get away. Don't underestimate them...they are expert at fitting through tight squeezes and getting away. Be careful.

Enjoy him, Greg!

Here I thought I'd do a cute little video of Henry today in his bird pool...but of course he had other plans.

He was in a rebellious and very grumpy mood right from the get go, and I think he knew I wanted to video him so he was deliberately uncooperative! :ha:

He even pooped in his bath (which he never does) and he kept snapping at me and being sassy thoughout the whole taping. He doesn't like it if I say he's grumpy or grouchy, even if he is! He was totally insulted when I told him he was dirty...and grouchy. :ha:

At the end of the video he pretty much tells me off and flies away...

<iframe width="425" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/_WWOUoXLH2E" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

What you just saw there, was one very sassy and very moody little Henry! See how he kept flipping his head and beak at me? Too funny.

Although blurry due to all his motion and movement, here he is about to stand right on top of the water spouting from the fountain pump...

We got 2 Rescue cats in 2003 - a pair of Himalayans.
We'd never owned that breed before, but they are very smart and have a sweet personality.
Because a previous owner had their front claws removed (!!!) they have been indoor cats.
We lost the older girl cat at Christmas 2 years ago, but the boy cat Teddy (Named after Teddy Roosevelt, because of his moustache!) is still with us.

The girl cat (Dolly Lama Diva) was quite the diva and HATED outdoors, but the boy cat, Teddy, fancies himself a great explorer and wants to go out whenever I go to the pond to feed the fish.

So, he gets carried in my arms, and I put him down on the bench, and he watches from there -
he doesn't get onto the ground! I was trying to get pictures of the fish in June and turned around and - snapped this.

My 130lb Kids: Dark markings Rocco and Light markings Lexi who are sporting their designer Doggles. Funny thing is when I placed them on them and they were able to look up toward the sun for the first time and see an airplane flying over head, pretty funny to me. Enjoy! :ha:

The weirdest thing...

Today, Henry was enjoying a peanut, his favorite snack...until he noticed two small keylimes on the counter and began to peck at the skins. I finally cut into one for him and he went nuts...actually eating some, and sucking the juice off the strings of pulp! He loved it.

In the picture you can see some of the peanut crumbs beside and on the lime. Hopefully you can make out the little holes in the lime halve from his beak still covered in peanut crumbs...

Yes Greg, I am deeply sad to report that my little Henry has passed away last Sunday, here at the cottage. :(:(:(

He was doing great here for almost two months, and enjoying himself immensely. Very suddenly he became ill and was gone in less than 24 hours.

I'm truly devastated that he's gone and in total shock that this happened. I don't even know why or how he died yet. I paid 350 bucks to have an autopsy done, so I can know the cause of his sudden and unexpected death. The results should be in by next Tuesday.

This is what I put my little Henry in when I brought him to the vet...

I am so glad that I got that autopsy done, because for the last week I've been blaming myself and feeling very guilty...but it wasn't my fault! It was so worth the money to have this procedure done because it brought total peace of mind and relief for me.

The result came in yesterday and it was a tumor in his kidney...a growing mass that overtook him. Apparently this type of tumor is extremely common in budgies and there's nothing I could have done to save him. It was non-malignant but still deadly. :(

Although I feel better that he didn't die of some kind of "neglect" on my part, I am still grieving him deeply and miss him more than words can say. He was the sweetest little budgie anyone could have, and I was blessed to have him for the six years I did. What a truly incredible and intelligent bird he was. One of a kind. I'll never forget him. :)

Here's a little memento of Henry that I got because it reminded me of his playful and friendly spirit...

At the cottage he would often hover over our plates of food in this positon, to see what he'd be having! :ha: He was just so downright adorable.

Sometimes at the cottage it would be real quiet and my mom and I would be reading at night. All of a sudden and out of nowhere, Henry would break the silence with a loud and bellowing "naughty, naughty"!!! :ha:

It would be so funny, we would burst out laughing. I miss his chatter and his humor.

You're welcome Greg. ;)

I know you took the news especially hard about Henry. I wish he didn't have to go. The poor little fella.

It was a blessing in a way...us all being at the cottage together. Henry really loved it there and he was so happy. My mom got super attached to him because when I was at the beach, she stayed with the pets. Henry was glued to her until I got back each day.

She was even teaching him phrases while I was at the beach. I was shocked one morning when I got him up and he looked right at me and said, "Nana's little budgie"!!! My mom laughed when I scolded her for teaching him that he was her budgie! We joked that he was tattling on her. :ha:

It's only been a couple weeks since he passed but it feels like months. I miss him so very much. Mornings are especially difficult without his happy and cheerful chatting.

I want to find out if there are ways to detect tumors in budgies before they kill them, and if they can be removed. I have questions for the vet and want to find out some things still that concern me about the autopsy report.

I told them Henry was there cousin from Canada every time I say Henry they raise there head and look over at me. Birds are smart. Im happy you know what happened to are friend. Yeah it really was funny when Henry would blurt out all the stuff my mom was sneakily teaching him while I was at the beach each day. :ha: He really loved her and treated her like she was a member of the flock.

My mom took Henry's death really hard too, and she still cries about it. He had that effect on people. You couldn't meet him and not love him. He was a dear sweet little bird with a huge personality.

Love to see a shot of Pineapple & Mango again sometime, Greg. They're such cute pair.

You are very Welcome, Sherry!!! I was hoping there would be a way to show you how much Henry meant to me because of your generosity and sharing him with the world. Believe me there were times I could not see what I was doing as I was drawing it, I was crying so badly. He touched us all so deeply for such a little fella. It doesn't do him justice, but I tried really hard to capture him in it.

You really did capture him Janan! When I first opened the box and saw the bulb, I could only see the back. When I turned it around, I gasped at the picture and how much it looked like him. You did a really terrific job. I burst into tears as soon as I saw his face. It made me miss him so bad. :(

I really can see how much you guys loved him too. So sorry he was taken prematurely from us. I had no idea tumors were so common in budgies. Wish he didn't have to die so young. I could have had him for another 6 years at least and possibly more. The oldest budgie that ever lived was 29 years old!

Boy do I ever miss him bad. He was one of a kind and I was so lucky to have him for the short time I did. I think about him everyday and wish he was still here.

Janan, those are beautiful fish and I located some here in London, but they said that only two females could live together...the males are the prettiest ones though. I wanted a male but didn't think it was right to just have one. Thought it would be lonely.

They live in their own little eco-system. There's a bamboo plant in there with them, providing oxygen and eliminating waste.

Apparently they can live for 2-4 years and longer if you care for them.

Jan - Your picture of the female Betta looks more like a young male to me. The color is pretty bright, and the fins seem a little long. I haven't had them for several years now and, maybe, over time, they've bred a little more color, and length of fins into the females. Lately, I've only seen males in the Petco and Petsmart stores around here.

Jananas Bananas
12-19-2011, 03:10 PM
John, I thought the same thing. They are breeding with more color and better fins in the females though. The cup was labeled veil tailed female so that's what I have been calling her (it). They have a lot of females here at Petco where I bought these as well as the Crown tail, Halfmoon tail, and I forget the other, oh it was Butterfly tail. One was $15 bucks though!!! More than I wanted to pay for a fish that may not live very long! :) They are all in their own tanks so I won't worry about it right now. Maybe it is a male Crown tail that would be cool because they were $12. :ha:

Sherry actually two females wouldn't do very well together because there would be a dominant one and the other would be picked on all the time. They say the best way is to have at least 6 of the females in one tank. They call it a colony I think.

I was in Bangkok once, and we went to a club, one evening. I asked the young kid waiter if he could get some for me. He said he could, and the next morning I got a call from the hotel front desk saying I had a visitor in the lobby. I went down and met him, and brought 100 pairs back with me. Males were 15¢, and females were 7½¢.
