Too low for Cuys - that's only 1200 m of elevation. Cuy start appearing at about 1800 m and go up from there. You're bang on about the Puma habitat, though. The colour variant in Loja is sort of a lilac blue; they're very attractive cats.

You see Beth, if you came from Europe, you would have known. It is rumored, that the retreating Roman army hid an incredible treasure somewhere in the Biokovo mountain pass, while defending their last villages from the invasions of Croats. They chose the only place that Southern Croats feared the most: snowy and icy mountain tip. And so each generation of Makarians goes to the mountains at least once in their lives to celebrate the conquering of this country and searching for the Roman treasure.

got ya!!!

Any and all persons, events or names are completely fictional, it is actually a plot of one not so well directed movie with Nicholas Cage. :ha: :ha: :ha: :ha: :ha:

There's a similar region in Ecuador, the Llanganates, where the retreating Incan general Ruminahui is said to have dumped the entire contents of the city of El Dorado (present-day Cuenca), some 15+ tonnes of gold. Still doesn't really want to make me visit the snow.

And I'm not kidding.

Jack, if you'd ever moved from close to the Arctic Circle to the heart of the tropics, you'd understand what I'm talking about.

If I ever moved to the tropics, it would no longer be me.
For millenia Europeans have lived here, even though there were other, maybe more acceptable places with warmer and more humid climate. This climate of ours, the way of life in temperate and colder climates is so different... we have to adapt, work harder to survive - something that Inca, Mayans and other cultures of tropical regions all over the world didn't have to do. ;) That's why they belong to the past.

Who says the Inca are in the past? The Quichua-speaking peoples are the same culture; the word "Inca" simply means "ruler." They've adapted, just not to a new climate - to new religion, a new language, and new rulers. (And in most cases, they've actually forced those things to adapt to them.)

I'm originally Canadian, Jack, from close to the Arctic circle, so I know all about adapting to the climate. Genetically, I'm of Scots/Viking ancestry. Moving hasn't changed who I am, it's just made my feet warmer in December and made it easier for me to grow bananas.

Your explaination was good. I'm ignorant of this subject. We don't collect art except for afew things painted by family members which aren't worth anything to anyone but us. We try to carry on the personal touch to everything, like the frame for this one is very simple that my husband made with a neighbor telling him how to do it. We did go in and talk to the owner of an antique store once and he said basically the same thing you did. We've ignored the situation for now because of what kind of $$ this could cost if anything can be done at all. I think someone wrote the date on the back and we can see if it goes back far enough to be acid free. I know there is a little story handwritten on the back telling about this painting being bought for a couple pennies and some land traded between the two friends. I just took some pictures of it and will post it.

I'm not good at taking pictures and I need a new camera! The glare is from the window. I did learn something today that I didn't know before. It's not painted on cardboard! My mother-inlaw has always just called it cardboard and maybe it's sort of like cardboard. Do you remember that thin pressed board that would be on the back of old console TVs, or what they made little kid record players out of. It is sort of like almost pressed board but if you break it in half it is like glorified cardboard that might even have some sort of fiber made up in it. Anyway, it's oil based paint, painted on that, in around 1942. It's looking faded and dirty and at some point, push is going to come to shove and we'll need to take it somewhere to have someone look at it.

thanks for sharing this piture with us it looks to be in good condstion to me

Oooh ..... well, there was a white film across the picture from the glare so I clicked on 'auto fix' and it made the colors so much prettier!! It really looks somewhere in the middle of the original photo and the vibrant color one. But it IS in good condition, I hope for the age and all the unknowns about it. It is turning a sort of yukky color on the low sky line on each side of Mt Shasta and into the trees to the left. Ric made the frame and he thinks it's oak and then he rubbed a stain on it. If we need to take it off we surely will. I've learned so much in these few posts from you!! I will take a q-tip and some distilled water and rub just a little on a corner and then let it sit for a month or so and if nothing happens I'll do a little more.

you dont have to let it sit you will know right away if the water is going to take to much away some times if it dos lift the vatnish its a good thing if its all yellowed

i think this has been a good topic for this thread as many of you have photos that are well loved althoue cookie and i have been discusing paintings much of what iv said alsow is aplicabal to photos its inportint if you are palning on printing them that they be on the best quality paper you can find alwas ues arcival photo paper and inks no point in priting somthing thats not going to last perticulerly if you go to the exspence of having them custome framed why risck it for just a few dollers more you get at leas a sum what long turm pice of art no art is forever but we can insure it last a wile and besids you may think its yours but in the end you never know were that pice will go after you are long gone sorry but thats the nature of art people save it and rarly if ever distro it so its going to be around this is why if you take that photot and fame it you sould sign it and date aslow its good to say what it is on the back if you wright on a pice of paper and put on back it could become separated and aslow as iv pointed out you wouldint want to put a bad pice of acidic paper on the back of your arcival photot it would set in to mostion the proceses of detiroration just some things to think about

For that group of photos I had settings like this.

Shutter speed 1/800. I would have used 1/1000 but I didn't have enough light and I didn't want to bump the ISO any higher.

Aperture was changing due to focal length changes depending on how far I zoomed in but it was mostly around 5 This lens goes from 4.5 at it's shortest length to 5.6 fully zoomed. It's what's called a slow lens. Someday I'll get an upgrade for it.

ISO was set to 2000

White balance was set to cloudy

EV was neutral for the most part.

No flash

4.5 frames per second burst speed

Like I said before the sensor in your camera can't handle too much ISO without creating a bunch of noise. Just keep that in mind.

You might also want to purchase Neat Image to remove the noise from the pictures.

I looked those seeds up online and it just gets more odd reading that the seeds have animal pigment in them.Animal pigment? Can you expound on this at all or link a source? The biologist in me is interested. Normally orange in plants results from carotene...which is found only in plants. Things like carrots, pumpkins, cantaloupe and sweet potatoes all contain carotene. Anthocyanin is another pigment commonly found in plants that results in purple and reds in stems/fruit. Things like black raspberries, eggplant, grapes, cherries and oranges all have anthocyanin.

As far as human pigment goes...the ones that come to mind right now are melanin, lutein and zeaxanthin. Of these, melanin is the only one produced in your body (by melanocytes). Melanin is a dark brown pigment found in all over the body responsible for dark skin, tanning, brown eye pigment, etc. Lutein and zeaxanthin are both collected from food sources (dark green leafy vegetables, corn, peas and egg yolks). Once again, these two are types of carotenoids. Both appear as orange-red in concentration.

Just a small plug here about optometry...both lutein and zeaxanthin are very important in the eye as antioxidants to defend against oxidative insult but also as pigments to absorb certain colors of light to provide better color discrimination, improve overall quality of central vision. Eating a diet with plenty of foods that contain these vital pigments such as green leafy vegetables (kale, spinach, brussel sprouts, broccoli, swiss chard, etc) and eggs can decrease your risk of developing cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (the top two causes of significant vision loss)....so EAT YOUR GREEN LEAFY VEGETABLES!!!

LOL...aight now I'm just ranting. So yeah...I'd definitely like to know more about the animal pigment aspect if you have more info.

And sorry for the 'full frontal nerdity.'

Russian plains are much safer than western ones. I would even bet they can work in -50°C and still safely land. Are those Tupolevs or something else?

Actually Jack, from the limited facts available on line regarding the former Soviet Union, their air safety in terms of fatal events is not too pretty. (1970-2009) AirSafe.com Method for Computing Airliner Fatal Event Rates (http://www.airsafe.com/events/method.htm) (Tog would be proud of me for the derail!)
* FLE - Full Loss Equivalent: This is the sum of the proportions of passengers killed for each fatal event. For example, 50 out of 100 passengers killed on a flight is an FLE of 0.50, 1 of 100 would be a FLE of 0.01. The fatal event rate for a set of fatal events is found by dividing the total FLE by the number of flights in millions.

Yeah, I want to get rid of Vista...I want my XP back! Haven't heard much about Win7 yet.

As far as the ads go, I'm pretty sure they're randomly selected due to key words on the page you are viewing. No clue on the psoriasis thing...I was looking at the homepage! Right now I've got something about insurance. Maybe it's TOTALLY random....cause it doesn't say either of those things on those two pages. Hmmm....ads here on B.o are typically very random and off-topic at least for me.

Superb jetplane pictures Momoese!

Dalmationsoap your picture is Awesome!

This snake picture is one that tells me the "rainy" season should start soon. I've seen many snakes out this week, and most of them fled quickly.

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=31229&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=31229)

I like this species because they have a special toxin. When they are eaten by a predator, especially Coral Snakes, the toxin kills the predator. So if you have these snakes around you do not have coral snakes (a venemous species related to Cobras).

Good weather and good growing! :2239:

The photography, I've seen here, is striking! I've noticed that some members like to show their wheels. This was a quick shot, I made as a camera test, taken prior to a short field trip.

Oh yeah, and the best summer storms are comfortable and warm, unlike those in srping and autumn. It's literally enjoyable to just stand out and enjoy the water drops falling on your skin. :) I can't really imagine a good way to catch that in the picture. :)

That's why I almost never photograph people. :) But you are definitely lucky. The weather channel says that most of our rain comes from the gulf stream [the Gulf of Mexico]. I don't think I want to stand out in that rain. :(
