Eric, that's the provincial bird of the Galapagos - a Blue Footed Booby. His name's Pancho. What the "Are you lookin' at me?" photo doesn't show is a long, wicked sharp bill. I was kind of scared to get any closer to him than about 5 feet away. Which is still a lot closer than I've been to most large seabirds, except when I was divebombed by a Frigate in Manta.

It's the trunk of a Ceiba tree - C. pentandra to be exact. Those are perfectly normal thorns, which the tree gradually sheds as it ages. That tree is about 50 years old; by age 100 or so it will be smooth, and by age 300 or so it will be in excess of 300 feet tall.

LOL....the Koi pictures just remind me of when I took my sisters to the Missouri Botanical Gardens. Surprisingly, I was the best behaved of the bunch! (keep in mind my sisters are both older than me....26 and 27) The oldest sister decided she was going to buy food to feed the koi under the bridge....which she did. The problem arose when she ran out of food. Her next idea was to just spit in their mouths...LOL...and people wonder why I'm so messed up!

Sidecar
First served up at Harry's New York Bar in Paris this classic is one of our favorite cocktails.
1 1/2oz. Brandy or Congac
1 oz. Cointreau or Triple Sec
1 oz. Lime or Lemon Juice
(your preference, we like to use lime juice)
Lemon Wedge or Twist
Granulated Sugar
Wet rim of a Cocktail glass and dip in the sugar.Combine first three ingredients with ice in a cocktail shaker.Strain into the cocktail glass.Garnish with Lemon.

It's made differently at Fathers Office with very expensive ingrediants. Also it's garnished with orange zest, not lemon. The "triple sec" is some old shcool french spirit that was basically the origianl triple sec. It's a fantastic cocktail! I'll take pictures of the ingredients next time we are there. :)

Patty, I'm Aunty. Ask Ante if you're confused - I sure was at first, but he's been calling me Aunty for about a year now.
Lonie - that photo is Cotopaxi as seen from Quito; I'm in Ambato right now. However, I did live there for about a year (during course of which, I took the photo from the roof of my apartment.)
Anyone confused about the altitudes remark - Quito is at 2853 m in the central square. I was at 3022 m when I took the photo. Cotopaxi tops out at 5,897 m and is about 100 km away from where I took that pic. And in Ambato, my house is at 3135 m.
And to top it all off, Cayambe, another volcano that can be seen from Quito. (Bear with me, I'm looking for my Tungurahua pictures!)

It was a 30-sec long-exposure in that sort of half-light you get right after sunset. I wish I had my old SLR, actually - I could have compensated for the low-light conditions by using a slower film. As such, it's grainier than I would have liked it to be.

Misi Luki in background as well as a small High Color Mini. Sure, they don't look fantastic but they're doing just fine. Indoor temperature is above the temperature outside on the thermometer (in Fahrenheit). Brrr!

It's an experimental hybrid from the Quito Botanical Gardens breeding programmes, not named as yet. It's exceptionally fragrant - one parent is a Hildegaard's rose.
A similar rose, with a more scarlet stripe, is called 'Scandalo' here.

My newest camera is a Nikon D90 DSLR. The lens I used for the last picture is a rather slow Nikon 75-300mm 4.5-5.6 that is so old it has no vibration reduction so I have to hold it really still to get good shots. I could use a tri or mono pod but almost never do. You can see some digital noise in both shots as both were taken in low light situations and required a very high ISO, and both shots were cropped which also adds more noise. My other lens is a Nikon 18-105mm 3.5-5.6 VR that came with the camera. It a nice general purpose lens, but again not very fast so I'll be looking to upgrade my glass at some point.
This is my Nikon D90 and lenses. This picture was taken with a 12 mega pixel Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS25 pocket camera which incorporates a Leica lens. I love this little camera! It has a nice zoom too.

Tony, that image you posted is awesome, but it's also huge. Do you have any way of sizing your pics? I think 800-1000 pixels wide is about the max that people with a normal size monitor can view without scrolling sideways. there are some good free editing programs you could try, or you could upload your pics to photobucket etc and use their photo editor then paste that photo link here like I do for all things not banana related. Lmk if need any help.

Howard, that one is in Mindo - it was never close to where I live, past or present! It's about 3 hours away from me at the moment, and when I'm in Quito, it's 1 hour distant (then of course I strap on me boots and go tromping through the bush for another hour or so to get there...) To get the shot, I nearly ruined the camera - I was standing in the basin at the bottom of the 50 foot drop of the main falls, shooting upwards. I had to disassemble the dang camera and dry each piece individually before it would work again.
Oddly enough, where I now live I am just 30 minutes distant from Ecuador's four showpiece falls - Agoyan (tallest single-stage, a nearly 40 m single drop), Mantel de Novia (tallest multiple-stage, at 35 m or so), Pailon del Diablo (highest volume multiple-stage), and Machay (comes straight out the side of a cliff) - but since I don't have a car I've never actually had a chance to stop and look at them! It's on my list of things to do in the new year, and I will definitely post the pictures here once I've got them

Yeah, that was taken with digital telephoto, and it adds a lot of grain to images that would otherwise be tack-sharp.
I so need a new camera and a load of new glass. Le sigh.
Thanks for the link - I'll check it out and if they have a Mac version, I'll likely get it.

They do have two versions for OSX (pro and home). I don't have it yet but I will after we get our new mac mini. I have a friend who has shown me examples of what it's capable of doing and let me tell you it's pretty amazing! Can't wait to try it. :)

i have more but i dint want to look like i was seeking attn. for my work. i just thought it was a nice contrasting view point on how an artist can look at a picture and change it. wile i love the original picture its rather gray and as far as a paintings goes this mite be OK from a photo realism point of view. its not that interesting from a more impressionistic stile.

Well the mag 7 earthquake that has devastated Haiti came through here as a mag 4 - so swinging lights and a slopping over pool. As the island has had a month of torrential rain - poor Haiti will be in a terrible state. I have emailed my contact with UMISTA but I don't expect to hear from him for a while as he will be BUSY! They don't need or deserve this!

Pauly, I'm not even remotely worried. It's too far away to do more than rain a bit of light ash on me, and even if it really blows and starts throwing chunks of rock or lava, I'll only feel the seismic effects as earthquakes of 4.0 magnitude or smaller. All that does here is rattle the windows and freak out the cat.

Wow! Love those leaves, Beth! What kind of plants are those?
lorax
01-16-2010, 09:47 AM
The main plants in the top photo are Anthuriums from Sect. Belolonchum. I want to say that it's A. longilobum but I'm truly not sure. There are also a couple of species of Philodendron lurking in the background. The shot was taken in Mindo, which is a cloud forest in Northern Ecuador, at an elevation of about 1500 m.
The bottom plant is a Philodendron, I think P. selloum - I just love the way the light plays through the leaves. This shot is from Mera, which is a transitional forest in Central Ecuador, at an elevation of about 1800 m.
So to answer your question more simply, they're a couple of my native Aroids (EEs).
