The recent lava flow where I live has advanced further in 8 weeks than the last two flow events did in over a year. It is less than 2 miles from homes and farm land and has the potential to cut off the only road out for about 10,000 people, including myself. Life on a volcano. Yikes!

Lava is finally predicted to hit the first road in my nearest town, Pahoa, by tomorrow. After creeping slowly the past few weeks it advanced 1/4 mile overnight and has about that much to go to hit that road and possibly take our dump and recycling center. It sucks.

Is it possible to erect a birm to contain and/or divert the flow from populated areas? Has this ever been attempted?

Is it possible to erect a birm to contain and/or divert the flow from populated areas? Has this ever been attempted?

There have been some attempts over the years, mostly with little success because of the sheer volume. There is also the issue that if they block it and it finds a new path to destroy homes and business it would not have hit if just left to flow. The reality is it could flow in this direction for decades, just as it mostly flowed in a different direction for 30 years. It's something like the equivalent of 1500 cement trucks full of lava per day. It's already dramatically impacted life around here and nearly 1000 have moved away to be somewhere closer to Hilo and away from the flow. They've also spent millions on alternate routes so we won't be cut off from all roads out, but they're all slow gravel roads so far, and they may well get covered eventually.

robguz24
10-28-2014, 03:03 AM
My friend called this the Last Minute Power Pole dance. This is our local utility frantically trying to install new taller poles than can be secured to survive the lava flow that is 1 day away from overtaking this road.

Wow, that's crazy. How far are you from the path?
Fortunately I'm 10 miles from this on the other side of a ridge so my neighborhood won't be directly impacted. Though our only town here will be split in half and destroyed to some degree. They're already closing schools in the pathway and sending kids to other schools miles away. It's all kind of surreal.

A few weeks ago I was in Sicily and got a bus ride up Mt Etna. Called Mungibeddu in Siciian. Had to walk thru the clouds for the final distance up to the rim. Peeked over and saw no smoke or fumes or lava. No tremors and interior cracks. But you never know, cause this is an ACTIVE volcano. Last eruptions were in 2013 and 2014 and are ongoing.

Some of the group on the bus crawled down the crater. Enlarge the pic to see the cooled off swirls of the last lava flow down at the bottom.

Once again the lava is headed straight for our town. This time the biggest shopping center. Virtually all the stores will be shut down today. Lava is expected to hit it within a week. It's the complex in the upper mid left of the image. It's truly bizarre to have been at this center yesterday and see it in the process of being abandoned. 100+ people will also lose their jobs. This image is a day old, so the lava is actually 400+ feet closer now. About 3500 feet from the first building in the shopping center.

From what I gather the shells are used /recycled for concrete substrates, parking lots ,driveways and calcium supplements/vitamins, chicken grit..

Look what the Kat dragged home!

Today was my heavy duty, 15 mile plus biking day. I went to check out the local gardening club; I like the members so I'll join. Then to discuss a change in cable services with Brighthouse; I hope I can find better. Stop at the produce market then to the bank to have a document certified. Finally I was headed off to pay my water bill; I choose to take the scenic route along Indian River.

Here in my town every now and then you see banana plants which all appear to be on private land--many seem to be abandoned--which I won't touch because I don't trespass and there's nobody to ask. Imagine my delight when I notice a mat by the river across from a house being rehabbed where it just so happened that the new owner was there directing workmen and told me to take whatever banana plants I wanted--all of them if I wanted since they only get ratty looking in the wind where they're planted.

Yippee! I plan to go back with my trowel (shovel on a bike is out I suspect) and my honking big shopping bag which holds a lot if I don't find someone from the garden club who'd like to trade transportation for some banana plants.

Paid my bill. Stopped at the store for a few things. Stopped and bought a few beers. (Where is Fall here in FL? It's seriously sweaty weather here.) And started on the final 3/4 mile of my journey.

And then there, abandoned by the side of the road, was beyond temptation. 6' or so of one man's trash and another woman's treasure. How could I get it home? Could I? I struggled but eventually balanced my trophy and walked it down the road. It's very heavy; it has at least 2 tiny pups started. And it teetered crazily all the way to my house yet wouldn't you know it balanced/posed perfectly on the kickstand for pictures?

I know what you mean it's painful going by lots and seeing them neglected and yellowing. There is one house here on the way to Walgreens which has it's backyard to the main road and is at the end of a cinderblock wall. It has a few bananas in the yard but one is alone close to the end of the fence and surrounded by high grass and weeds.:0491:

Get a folding Army shovel those were designed to be strapped to a backpack so are perfect for use on a bike.

This heat is crazy but at least it means a bit more grow time even if the days are short. Not to mention that my pool is starting to come up in temp again. :2730:

Funny that I posted that (longer clip) on another forum Halloween night which was a few days before I scored my "roadkill". To be more circumspect, I did wear a dress last Sunday pedaling to church--never again. They accept shorts and assured me of that so I'm done with donning restrictive chain grabbers.

But I do think I need a good hat for my travels--something distinctive like the Chiquita banana lady wore. Suggestions as in post a pic...:ha:

Well, I'm bored so I'm posting a picture I took standing in my backyard of my next to next door neighbors' tree. Yes, it's a lousy out of focus or too much light shot but I haven't found time to take another; I'm spreading compost and other stuff right now.

I figured it was a tree house and wondered what parents or grandparents would let their precious babes climb that high; my "right beside me" neighbors assured me it's not a TH and told me why it exists. I would never have guessed. So why do you think they built it?

ETA: The clue is in the very unfocused greenery that I failed to notice even when it was looking me clearly in the eye.

Kegas76

Not sure what any of the greenery is but it is for picking some sort of fruit off a vine/plant growing up the tree?

Doesn't looks very safe :bungejumpnaner:

Kat2

Yes, it is for harvesting a fruit. The picture is lousy and so is the fruit IMO but you have to marvel at how determined people are to get at "it". Naive me 1st thought tree house--neighbor on the other side (farther from the "ladder") told me he suspected some kind of spying set up. Um, okay.

Another hint: This is for harvesting from a tropical "vine" that climbs up high then bears roaring fruits.

My 1st attempt at Half Half Smokes--a DC icon. (First time stuffing casings also.) These are quite edible and won't go to waste but not the real deal IMO. Anyone know the recipe? Pretty please? (Yes, I wrote down everything I added to my winging it effort so these can be duplicated.) And if I keep making these, I'll have to get a new smoker; I can smoke other meats on this baby grill but sausages are terribly unforgiving it seems.

Kat, I don't think it's consider invasive here in central FL because we still get a frost. I'm hawaii they grow 70ft+

robguz24
08-28-2016, 12:42 PM
There is a difference between invasive and aggressive. It's not an invasive species in Hawaii. It rarely sets seed, and they aren't small so they don't get spread everywhere out into native forest. However, they are aggressive in that the existing plant grows quickly with many vines that will take things over, harm trees that they grow onto as do many other types of vines.

Kat2
08-28-2016, 01:12 PM
I have pothos growing on 2 trees. It's very pretty but I have to cut hanging vines to keep it from rooting in the lawn. Apparently someone didn't bother ever before because part of my weekly ritual is pulling them out of the yard. I'd love to replace the one in front with something equally attractive but not so prone to spreading. (Yes, I grew these in a pot when I lived in MD; it was much easier to control.)

I owned a 1991 version years ago; Ohio ate her. I sold the carcass to a body man; his Dad is a mechanic so Molly is happily restored by now I hope. What are the odds of meeting a guy who bought a very slightly used 1993 Geo Metro that he tucked into a garage and drove very rarely? How likely is it for a virtual stranger to start her up, get out and say "You drive"? OMG! Less than 60k original miles...same color (Molly was much more used when I got her). Chick car? Sure and this chick was loving it. I didn't pop the clutch or stall her once; within a few miles, I was living the dream of driving my sweet gal again. We were one.

Chick car? My 1st attempt at Half Half Smokes--a DC icon. (First time stuffing casings also.) These are quite edible and won't go to waste but not the real deal IMO. Anyone know the recipe? Pretty please? (Yes, I wrote down everything I added to my winging it effort so these can be duplicated.) And if I keep making these, I'll have to get a new smoker; I can smoke other meats on this baby grill but sausages are terribly unforgiving it seems.

use ground peppercorn instead of black pepper. some mrs. dash and some sage. cook up some rice. mix half and half sausage and rice. do a little bit and thro it in a pan and brown, try it before you put it in your casings. use to deer sausage that way.

I'm always amazed at how much meat a bullet smoker holds!

Yesterday's efforts:
7.5 lbs of brisket, 8 lbs of sausage (my recipe--still not Hot Half Smokes. Not Italian or brats or anything I've tasted before but will not go to waste) and probably 2 lbs of chicken breasts.

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=61150&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=61150&ppuser=17055)

Now the slicing and clean up begins. Ack! That's why this happens only 4x a year at the most. :ha:

Yum.....
Great presentation.
I see a nibble missingWell, sure, why not? Cook's treat, ya know.

Chicken suitably prepped for sandwiches was put away last night; bones have been boiled for soup. It wasn't obvious but not all of the sausages made it to the freezer. Jimmy Dean, Bob Evans and the guy at Johnsonville can eat my shorts: mine is yummy!

I love kitchen gadgets and such; once upon a time I purchased them new but rarely do now. Why would I since people toss out neat stuff all of the time? I bought a 3 blade Paderno spiralizer for $1 when others were paying $60 for one. Why so cheap? Seller hadn't a clue what it was and neither did I but I pulled my cash out because it looking "interesting" and cost less than a cup of coffee. :ha: I have drawers, shelves and boxes filled with such goodies. Someday I need to sort through my treasures...

My meat grinder/sausage stuffer was purchased at a thrift shop for $5; it was sparkling clean so I doubt it was ever used. But has been now--I love it! I finished the brisket on an old Oster slicer I purchased used for $3 that cuts like butter and folds up to a very small footprint which is good when you live in a nearly tiny house. ;)

Wanna talk cast iron? I've got over 40 pieces--some very good/worth something but most just useful. Good anchors, too.

I was in Japan for the first time last week, specifically Tokyo. They have gumball type vending machines all over. One of them had fruit and vegetable cat hats, including this one. I was dying to buy one, and I don't even have a cat. Couldn't find them anyway, and the one machine selling them was already out.

Soyuz MS-05 launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, in Kazakhstan at 15:41 utc yesterday. The launch was near-perfect and no issues were encountered to interfere with the 6 hour docking scheme so it docked with the International Space Station at 21:54 utc.

The 1st photo = The Soyuz-FG rocket, in-place at the launch site, after roll-out. The rockets are transported horizontally by train.
The 2nd photo = The Soyuz-FG rocket during lift-off.
The 3rd photo = The Soyuz MS-05 spacecraft docking with the International Space Station. But even after docking clamps have engaged and a seal is achieved, testing the seal delays the opening of the hatch for another hour or more.

@ Cincinnana - Totally awesome photo of Tiger caterpillers.
We have Honey Vine milkweed in a north garden to attract Monarch butterflies. I shot this photo today and it has pod starters. But I don't have the green banana thumb so mostly I just grow Dumb Cane. It looks really cool and it likes me. We also had a Toad Stool invasion this year and I shot photos of that last week. I think they like the blue chemicals the landscapers use... Well, that and all the rain we get. I also shot the photo of my Dumb Cane today.

Some photos I shot this week...
1. The total solar eclipse at around 13:15 cdt. Just after the peak when the sun was just a thin crescent and without using a filter.
2. A honey bee I found on a marigold during the eclipse.
3. A pistachio cake made with pistachio flour, pistachio butter, and pistachio extract. It's for a party and I added green food coloring and the gummis.

What!?!?!?! It's almost abuse NOT to indulge one's dog with a banana hat! They should be given out at every shelter when small dogs are adopted just to improve their lives. He learned very quickly that when it gets put on he gets a snack. So now he goes crazy as soon as I pick it up and he tries to get it on.

Sugars are kisses from your dog when you get too close to their face.

The ones you find in the yard are Scooby Snacks:ha::ha:

That interests me more than you can imagine. Is the "pistachio extract" real or imitation? In the USA, all pistachio flavorings are imitation and, although delicious, tastes nothing like real pistachio. Typical principal ingredients of imitation pistachio flavoring are:

benzaldehyde (bitter almond)
citronellol (rose)
methyl anthranilate (grape)
vanillin (vanilla)

If your "pistachio flavoring" is of this kind, you shouldn't mix it with real pistachios. You should either use pistachio meal without added flavorings to let the real pistachio flavor through, or use cheaper almond meal with the imitation flavoring.

What's "gummis"?
