Hey guys! I wanna get Musa Yunnanensis and I wanna know its details. I heard it can grow 40ft in the shade (but probably not here!) :0491: I heard it can have a p-stem of 20in in diameter! Is that true? What I wanna know the most is if it has a thick p-stem or a thin one and how thick? Thanx! God Bless! BananaLee:woohoonaner::ukkibannana::banana_ve:banana_az::bananar ow::dancinpup:

There are a few around.
I bought mine as itinerans var gigantea, and this will be its first winter here on the Gulf Coast. Some of the TN guys have it too. I had an extra earlier but gave it away.
As for size, I don't think anyone knows yet. I've heard there is a mat at Leu Gardens in Orlando. I will say that it went from seedling to really tall (8 ft to the top of the leaves) really fast. I dug it up and transplanted it about a month along and really set it back. It is just now starting to grow again.

Musa itinerans and Musa yunnanensis are different species (both have multiple described varieties). The 40ft shade banana is Musa itinerans var. xishuangbannaensis. As far as getting one, it may or may not be around, you might be able to buy a plant with the name but its hard to know if it will be true to type.

Thanks Gabe15. That's more detail on the point I was trying to make.
Bananalee, you'll find more of the yunnanensis/itinerans confusion in the threads below this one in the species forum. Also, look for the ebay seller "hortus119". When I bought my Ensetes from him back in June I'm pretty sure he had "Yunnan banana" seedlings too. I'd bet the rent money that he bought them as itinerans and they're actually yunnanensis, just like everyone else selling itinerans seeds/seedlings. Both of my itinerans came from different ebay sources, one as seed and the other as a 1 gallon seedling, and both were actually yunnanensis.
Hope this helps.

hortus119 is one of the better sellers on ebay. The plants from him are nice healthy plants. All have taken off like a rocket when they got put in the ground.

Thanks Russell, yea, I saw him on ebay and thought of buying from him. Are they easy to germinate and how do you germinate them? Thanx! God Bless! BananaLee:0517:

Remember, I thought I was buying itinerans...
I bought ten seeds last summer from another ebay seller, "Georgiavines". Two came up, spent the winter in a greenhouse, one lived and was planted in the spring. Then I saw another seller had foot tall plants for sale on ebay so I bought one to go with my sorry looking seedling. That's actually the plant in my gallery.
Don't go by me, seeds are not my thing.

That's who it was! Thanks Russell! How fast do they grow from seed in on season?:03:

This is my plant, pic taken back in July...

The small plant to the far right is the one I grew from seed. The big one, with 3 pups is the plant I bought off ebay. It was about the size of that small plant on the right when I got it back in March (I think it was around March). The fence behind it is just over 6 ft tall.
I moved it to get it out of intense sun, and it has hated me for it ever since. I had to remove all but a very few leaves, and it is just now starting to look a little better.

Nice! So I'm guessing it likes sun or did it go thru a shock from transplanting.

The new home is in dappled sun under the live oaks, so it is out of the full, all day sun - and where it should be happier. That spot is where I'll plant my saba next spring. I think its just transplant shock, guess I should have waited for cool weather - November or December.

So it's actually Musa itinerans that likes the shade and not Yunnanensis?

No, my guess is that they both want a little shade - that is shelter from hot, direct sun. This plant was beginning to scorch.

Cool! Which in your opinion is better, Itinerans or yunnanensis? Where can I find the true Itinerans? Preferably var gigantea.

Not sure there is a "better". Some members have the different itinerans varieties, did you look at those other threads?

I didn't look at all of them. I would want to know which grows faster though. Thanks! God Bless! BananaLee

You can't. We've been fighting for one for 3 years.
