Hey everyone,

I live in Vancouver, Canada. Right now, I have four bajoos in large pots and one in the ground. None produce any fruit. They are about 4 feet high at the moment, and several of them have babies off the side of the main trunk.

Anyway, it is getting cold at night here (dipping to about 4 degrees Celcius). So I guess soon I will bring some of the bananas into a mud room where they will stay dry (but still be technically outside).

The one outside? cut the stalk back and wrap it for the winter? Leave it?

By the way, my motivation for having bananas is that I have travelled a lot in tropical countries (I was recently in southern Ethiopia) and love having bananas around me at home in the more temperate rain forest (wet winters) we have on the Pacific Northwest coast.

By the way, I also have twin infants (14 month old girls), so it takes me a long time to post or do much of anything else these days. So I may ask questions and not get back for a while. Hope that is ok.

Thanks again for any advice. Also, feel free to ask me all the stuff I probably forgot to mention.

Cheers

Welcome aboard, Pangea :) ! I have similar time-lag probs, myself. School, chores, homework, nanners.... Have to rush sometimes to see if I'm missing a post, sometimes  ! It's a very friendly & informative site. As for outdoor Basjoo in BC, I'd cut them to the ground & mulch heavilly (think that's what Jack does in Slovakia).
If ya have any questions about using the forum, just ask!

Bob!? Moutain Nyala!? .... Gimme a sec, I'll grab my rifle & meet ya in Ethiopica :) !!

Hey all,

well, how the seasons march on, whether or not you are ready for it. Last year, the potted banana trees I cut down and bubbled wrapped all died. This year, I bought four 5 footers from a nursery and planted them directly in the ground. They are producing big leaves and babies off the main stem, and have given great foliage thoughout our summer. I will see if I can get a photo online here.

Once again, fall is approaching, so I will try to take the advice offered on the board and cut them back and mulch. I have also bought several burlap on posts type package from the local garden centre that are meant to be wrapped around the trunks of the trees. Should the mulch go inside the wrap or on the outside, around the trunk?

Thanks again

after the first frost...cut the leaves off the trunk...fill a garbage bag full of oak leaves, cut a hole in the bottom of the bag big enough to slide over the trunk of the banana..then repeat with another bag and stack them ontop of each other to protect the entire trunk...then:goteam: remove in the spring..very easy, very cheap and the bananas love their winter rain coats..then in the spring they will let you know wen they are ready to come out when they start to send a new leaf...slide the bags off and you have a happy well growing banana...it will maintain the trunk height from the previous year, and in a few years it will send fruit and pups....
