I have herd alot about this banana latley, and I am starting to want one. (lol, bananana addi.)

Do you think (its worth growing) i could grow an ae ae rite in the middle of zone 7/8? And has anyone grown an ae ae in my zone?

I have herd that the ae ae banana has deep roots and can tolarate strong winds, is this true? And they are verry hard to dig up, they are also slow growers compaired to other species... I would love to learn alot of info on these plants...

:D

If you are the sort of person who wants a trophy car, a trophy house, then of course you need a trophy banana. In your zone of course, you need a greenhouse. This is minor -- it will cost the same as a swimming pool to install and maintain year-round.

Sounds like you will be raising the roof. Many Ae Ae's do spend their entire life in a pot because otherwise they would freeze in the winter.

One of my 12 footers blew over yesterday as we had 40 plus mile per hour winds. Fortunately it only fell 20 degrees and rested on a structure. It is now staked with two others. The trophy car is way more fun! Save your money or move.

Mine blew over too this summer. I repotted it and put it in the greenhouse. I think it was actually my fault and it was getting too much water. They just don't seem to need as much as some of the others, maybe because it needs more shade, maybe because the soil is more gravelly and well drained in the part of Hawaii where they're from originally.

You would be able to grow your ae ae and overwinter it in a 7 foot greenhouse. you just would have to chop and drop it before bringing it in. That would reduce the height.

Or dig a 12 foot hole under the green house.

LOL! I completely absolutely agree! If I had a banana I needed to arse with too much, then it wouldn't be worth it for me. I'll stick to growing 100 Orinoco's thankyouverymuch. lol! :)

If you want one you can always grow it as a house plant, especially since its one people are growing more or less just for the leaves anyways. Bananas make excellent house plants, they may not fruit or get big, but they will look nice.

Jeeps! Had no idea Ae Ae was That prone to wind damage! Still, if I had a 7' greenhouse and wanted Ae Ae (Def on the Want part), I'd grow it in the greenhouse, let it pup (with pupping hormone, if necessary), & cut it down before it reached the roof. Then the healthy pups could take over.
The "cut it down" & "pupping hormone" parts cause it'll never make edible nanners. The "let the pups take over" part cause the smaller (under 7') plants will have just as pretty leaves, anyway. That would also leave ya plenty of leeway for swaps & trades :).

Thanx All, for the info on wind, drainage, etc cause I'm Definitely gonna get one myself! I'm in zone-7 with up to 70+ mph winds (at times) but I totally Luv a challenge!

BTW, I will Definitely create a progressive thread on mine, when I get it, to chart the progress through it's first year.
