Alata would be perfect. I'm pretty sure to get fruit, you can also use Edulis if you are in a pinch. I'm thinking the subgroup which contains Caerulea and Incarnata would not be receptive. If you're growing for seeds, then leave it to your imagination. :D
I hope that helps a little.

There are two Ruby Glow in my neighborhood. Both of them get a few fruit each year. I am trying to find out what they are being pollinated with so I can get them to produce more fruit. I don't know if they are self fertile . I can't seem to find a definite answer anywhere. I don't know of any Alata around that could be pollinating them.
The Ruby Glows here in San Diego just started to flower in the beginning of Sept.

Ruby glow is definitely self sterile it needs pollinated from an out side sores i was under the impression that P. caerulea was the best pollinator I'm sure i read that on the UK site i cant seem to get in to their server right now to check for sure theirs also a nice face book page for Passaflora nuts like me

O.K., since Frederick is an edulis cultivar, we are expecting it to pollinate Ruby Glow?

All I can find is that Alata is a close relative of Ruby Glow. Alata needs to be pollinated by a clone. So I am thinking that Ruby Glow will work the same way. Now if I can only remember which plant I got the cuttings from.

Yes. But I am still not sure what is pollinating them. I know of three different Ruby Glows that I can get cuttings from.I can also send you a few seeds from thirty different Passiflora if you like.

I'm going to order some seeds for a gigantic Grandaflora if they sprout id be happy to send you some well rooted cuttings from them thats the one with the red and blue flower has the largest fruit can get up to 12' in size its a big plant thou 50' in one season but i would think if you have walls around your yard like i do it wouldn't be a problem iv alternated pasaflora and grape vines all around my walls sure softens my desert looking climate

Since Ruby Glow is a progeny of Quadrangularis, Edulis is able to pollinate it. There's also another one that is similar, which is called Purple Tiger, which I can also pollinate it with Edulis "Frederick" and the seedlings should have nice fruit, with the same rich fragrance that Edulis has, but hope to see larger fruit. The seedlings are yet too young to see a result, but out of 40 or so, there's bound to be one that's worthy. I've learned that the chromosome pairs need to be close enough for it to 'take', which is why there have been many successful crossings with Quad. and Alata, Incarnata and Caerulea, and Vitifolia and Coccinea (for example). One saving grace, has been many years ago, my discussions with John Vanderplank and taking a class of Patrick Worley's at the U when I lived in NorCal. I have learned so much from these two men, and I will be forever grateful.

There is a passiflora Belloti within 50' of the Ruby Glow with fruit. Could this be the pollinator?

Ahh!!! yes! Belotii is Alata x Caerulea... so, there's your needed Alata Genetics. What a nice flower that would make too. The progeny would be beneficial to trial as well, as with the Caerulea genetics, it should be relatively frost hardy. Keep those seeds!! :) WTG!

I have seedlings from a fruit of the Ruby Glow in the photo. They are about four months old. By next summer I might have some flowers to show.

Well I think my neighbor may have sprayed weed killer on my Ruby Glow. She keeps having any vines cut that grow through the fence and now the whole plant seems to be wilting and the areas closest to her side seem to be the first affected. I'm thinking about chopping it down pretty low and seeing if it will send some new growth but it may be too late.

I don't know if the seedling I sent you made it and I am still not sure if it will produce fruit. If you replace the Ruby Glow and want passion fruit I don't think you can beat Frederick's for our location.

So far the seedling is doing great, I'm just not sure where to plant it, especially if I have a nieghbor spraying weed killer on my vines. I may have to plant it on a different fence.

Took me two years I finally found it. I've been going around the neighborhood, pollinating all the Ruby Glows. Should get lots of fruit this year as long as my pollen donor keeps flowering.

So, Tony, what are you using to pollinate the Ruby Glow? Or is that top secret?
On another thread, I read that you like the flavor of alata best. Is that in comparison to edulis (like Fredericks) or compared to non-edulis Passiflora?
I read on some website that Ruby Glow used to be considered P. alata but is now recognized as its own species P. phoenicea. Are the flowers of your alata different from those of your P. phoenicea? (Yes, I'm too lazy to search through the 31 pages of posts on that thread!)
You finally got me interested in non-edulis Passiflora... but only because you say some taste good!

P.caerulea pollen, like the flavor compared to all I've tasted, edulis is very good,it is a different taste than edulis more sweet, this is not one of those ,I have this one so I'm going to say it's the best ,type deals:ha:.The flowers are almost identical, alata and phoenicea and Decaisneana. The fruit of alata and phoenicea taste the same. I just happen to have rooted cuttings

Have you tried to pollinate P. alata or phoenicea with P. edulis pollen and it doesn't work, or you just haven't tried it? Just curious because if only P. caerulea works, then I'd need to plant P. caerulea too. And I don't have any space!

P.caeru
Edulis may work but at a very low rate of success. P.alata pollen works on ruby glow but I don't believe vise versa .The sure thing is caerulea. You have room, you need to make some sacrifices like I do. :ha: There are over 700 varieties of passiflora and I want them all. You will have to hand pollinate ruby glow, honey bees are not large enough to do the job

Nice harvest! I already have to hand pollinate my P. edulis because without that, I don't seem to have enough bees to do a reliable job. That's not all bad because it means I have some control over how many fruit I get.
Yep, it's all about making hard choices -- which plants get the axe and which get to stay. So far I haven't had mine in the ground long enough to make very many informed choices.
But at least now Ruby Glow is on my radar.

I have tried many time to pollinate ruby glow, not alata yet, with frederick.I may have 1 fruit not sure because of possible x pollination. Their are probably other pollen that will work but caerulea works every time.I have caerulea seedlings and rooted cuttings:nanadrink:

That's nothing yet I've got another 150 fruit on the vine. First I got rid of all the very tall plants ,no more worries about them taking down the phone lines.

Do you grow passiflora from seed? On average how long does it take to get bloom? I've read that it takes years when grown from seed. Is that true? I'm getting kind of old myself so I'm not sure that I have years left to see them bloom. I would really like to get some cuttings and/or seeds from you. I can pay you a little. I've loved the plant since I was a little boy - maypops grew wild where I grew up (north central Alabama). Please let me know if you have cuttings or seeds. Thanks! You can PM me if you want.

Tony, not sure when I'll be in San Diego next, but sounds like I'll need to pick up some rooted cuttings of alata, phoenicea, and caerulea. And find a place to plant them.

The less sophisticated among us (i.e., me), just use a q-tip and it works like a charm.
