Mine totally is NOT the biggest....but it's just over 6' to the tips of the leaves (in a pot too LOL). I kinda wonder how big they get too. I heard like 8 feet or so.

Has anybody ever gotten SIAM RUBY to flower and bear fruit? If so please let us know.

I'm curious about this too. This banana has been available for a few years now, right? Surely someone has one that fruited by now?

To my knowledge no one has a picture of one flowering or fruiting...Mine is about 5 ft in a pot and is 2 years old with lots of pups...I'll try to take pic tommorrow and post.

to date theres no official record of one having ever bloomed
Found in the wild in Indonesia, 2005 but research indicated that it originated in Papua New Guinea it is almost certainly a wild subspecies of Musa acuminata, such as M. acuminata ssp. Tapo or something similar.
ts been purported by natives to have a sweet unseeded fruit
But to date there have been no studies done to prove this it reaches a mature hight of 8ft to 10ft

PS Eric my Siam Ruby isn't vary big only about 3ft its ruffly 1.3 years old the secret to rapid growth in the plant are temps in the 90s they love heat and sun so if your bring it inside to grow find a hot place but away from heater vents they don't like hot Air blowing on them

Mine is only about 4' I picked it up mid summer and it's grown over a foot since. I'll try to get pics up this afternoon, it's all red and has only shown variegation on one leaf so far. It recently pushed up 5 pups in a 3 week period.

Well, since there are no pics so far, I'll post a couple of mine (and hope others will do the same). I kinda doubt mine is the 'biggest' of all the members' here, but it's growing very fast. I've had it 4 months now and the tip of the leaves are just over 6' tall (well, it's in a pot, so you can probably take off about a foot of that for 'cheating' LOL).

And a close-up of the pups...there are 3 now (one on the back isn't visible in this pic)

My plant (pictured to the left) is about 6 ft tall and wide. That picture was taken back on July 9. I'd update the picture but there really isn't much point because it looks exactly the same as it did back then, more or less.

Here's a pic of mine from 6-7 weeks ago,it's potted now, didn,t want to shock it late in the season by digging it up and bringing it inside.I am keeping it in shade until I bring it in,hopefully it will like it inside in some sun after being out in fall weather and shade-anyway,enough talk-here it is-

Ok here it is.

The First pic is from June 12th

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=18287&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=18287&ppuser=1342)

The next 2 are from today

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=24031&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=24031&ppuser=1342)

That is a 4 ft ruler. To the very top of the highest leaf is another 2 ft and 8 inches. So for now its 6 ft 8 inches.

I have two that are between 5' and 6'. Probably closer to 5'. Mine seem to spend more energy pupping then shooting leaves up. Monday we had winds at 25-30mph and gusts to 40. Shredded them pretty bad. :waving:

76 inches to top of tallest leaf on main p-stem
3 waist high pups
2 brand new emerging pups.

In the ground, Central FL white sand with some peat added, planted this spring as a little sprout.

Photo coming as soon as I find the camera's cable...

Here you go.

This is part of my "red bed."
Bordelon behind Siam.
Firebush to left. Red pineapple in front of that.
Red sage to the right.
Firespike barely visible at right edge.

If I can remember to bring my camera to school someday, I'll take a picture of the 'Siam Ruby' bananas in the UT Gardens. One mat is definitely taller than I am (6'7"), probably close to 8 feet to the top of the leaves.

The guy was cut out of another pic and added to the picture. Originally he was in a picture standing next to a very tall Saba. I can't seem to find the picture, but it's one of our more active members.

LOL! Awesome! Definitely looks like something from TyTy though :)

The picture was formerly my profile picture (you will not see the picture posted on this web site again). There was an unauthorized use and alteration of this picture, I have since removed this picture and all other pictures (that I have posted over the last four years) within my photo gallery, signature and avatar.

The member that posted the alteration did not intend to offend me and was very apologetic and just trying to be humorous (I did not see the humor in it).

No offense, but what's the big deal? I'd totally be okay with someone using my pics for something like that. I would be kinda upset if they were trying to use it to sell something, but just the joke it was used for didn't seem offensive in the least. Again....don't really see the issue (and doesn't seem to justify removing all your pics). Again, no disrespect intended.

The post is titled " Who has the Biggest-Tallest siam ruby out there?"
I said "This guy"(as he had grown the biggest Saba), so I cut his photo from his famous Saba picture and put him under the Siam Ruby.

I was implying that he could probably grow a giant Siam Ruby, too.

Checked everywhere I could find. Still cant find Any Reports or Photos that show that Ruby Siams can make fruit. This could be a rare banana cultivar that reproduces Only by pupping. A gentic defect of some kind.

Rmplmnz: There IS a "private gallery" option. You CAN have galleries that are NOT available to other members.

Hi BigDog,
We were just at the gardens on Saturday, unfortunately, my camera is broken so no photos. Did you notice the solid green pup on the other side?
There were also some huge green Ensetes there, I don't know what variety they are (Glauca??), the base was huge.
Do you know what they do with their plants for the winter? I think the gardens are in a good microclimate with the river nearby and all, but surely the bananas wouldn't make it through the winter???

bigdog
10-10-2009, 10:03 AM
Hi 1aday! Do you live in Knoxville?

The big green Ensete is E. superbum, which I also uploaded to my gallery. It is a beast! The smaller Ensete, which still isn't exactly small, is E. gilletii (there is a thread I just started yesterday about it). All of the Ensete come inside for the winter. There are 6 species of cold-hardy Musa, plus a Musella lasiocarpa, in the gardens that stay out all year though, and more to trial next year.

Frank, you say the ensetes are overwintered inside. How exactly are they overwintered? Bareroot, potted or how? I have a decent sized glaucum that I will digging up within the next couple of weeks and wondered the best way to overwinter it so I can maximize its growth for next year. Thanks for sharing the pics and I am still overwhelmed with the size of the superbum!!! Got one that germinated this summer from seed and is only about 6" tall right now and it will be going into Cleveland Cathy's greenhouse.

Thanks for the info, Frank.

I live about 50 minutes east, on the east border of Dandridge. We don't go into Knoxville very often, but try to stop at the gardens while we are there.
We like to eat at the Sitar (Indian) restaurant nearby and then we walk around the gardens to digest a bit before driving home....

bigdog
10-10-2009, 06:49 PM
Sitar is great! I love Indian food. Email me next time you decide to come into town, and I can show you some palms and bananas around town.

Randy, the Ensete are stored bareroot in the greenhouse. I will be overseeing them this year, but probably won't do anything different.

Frank

P.S. That E. superbum is awesome, isn't it?

I actually gasped when I saw the base of it! Then I think drool ran down my chin.

Will let you know when we get into town.

Doesn't it get too warm in the greenhouse to keep them barerooted? I want to hear more, since I have many small ones that won't all fit in the gh. If I can uproot them and mash them all together in a big clump, it would help!

Susan

Susan, sorry I didn't see you question until now! No, it doesn't get too warm for the Ensete bananas. That greenhouse is kept at about 60F, so it's more like a cold frame. I have kept small Ensete glaucum under the house for a couple of years, and they seem to do fine. E. ventricosum doesn't do as well, although they all made it the first year. This year, none of them made it through last winter except the E. glaucum. The larger ones always make it through.

Frank

P.S. This thread is supposed to be about 'Siam Ruby', so we should get it back to that.

This was my "Profile Picture" and not some random picture from my photo album. I formerly used this picture on numerous sites as my "Face" to the forum. It is one thing to alter another member's picture without their permission..it is another level when the picture is actually of the member and it is their profile picture. I feel bad reviving a dead thread..but after all this time I am still incensed about this.

Of course it fruits, the big question is whether or not its edible. From the description of the fruit I have from a friend who fruited it, it is a seeded (non-edible) banana.
