Research published in Environmental Microbiology indicates that banana bunchy top virus (BBTV) can survive passage the human digestive system - the virus was found in “reclaimed water” (sewage water than is reclaimed for crop irrigation) in Florida.
A story about this was published online at physorg.com, “Reclaimed Riddle”: Reclaimed Riddle (http://www.physorg.com/news173351209.html)
Although this is interesting, the physorg.com article did not mention that BBTV is not water-transmissible to banana plants. Therefore, BBTV in irrigation water poses no known disease risk to agriculture.
