Got in this evening from a day trip to the tropics of Anniston, AL. This was an unnamed variety that my host brought home from China. Hardy for him in zone 8a...

Anyone have a guess?

It is a hybrid between a wild M. acuminata variety and a wild Rhodochlamys species, but the possibilities are endless. Was this host Hayes by any chance? If so I think I have the same variety but I have not seen it flower yet.

Gabe, it was indeed, Hayes!!! He mentioned that he sent you one when you were in CO. I had asked him if I could post this and see if you, or someone else could give your input on it!!! Thanks for responding and I will link Hayes to this!!! Hope you are doing well!!!

Wow, that's really pretty - and what a great size!!!

I'd love to have it too, does Hayes plan to make this available?

I have one at home that i raised from seed that is similar I am trying to ID. It has the red on the back of the leaf and the few maroon streaks in the leaves. I will have to check if the stems are also red. I ordered seed from all over last winter but my "helper" gr son messed with my tags so I have some I am unsure what the names were.

Just based on his original description I was pretty sure it was a hybrid like what I described, but its nice to see a photo to confirm it. Can you tell if there is any pollen on the male flowers?

I honestly did not check that close because it rained the whole day. Don't know if you are aware of what is going on in the southeast, but there is MAJOR flooding. They closed major roads all around us yesterday but luckily it did not affect our trip. Sorry, maybe Hayes will see this and be able to answer your question...

im just getting this banana really going, so it will be next year before i can share (and ive promised some already). i need to get some plants going at a few other local places, but i plan to start sending out some trades next year. i would love to see a hardier blood leaf type out in the nursery trade.....hopefully it wont be long.
