Well,
considering that I never tasted any banana fruit beside store cavendish varities I would like to ASK You if anybody is willing to sell/trade/donate/what ever to me a single banana "finger" of Orinoco, Ice cream, Raja puri or some other hardyer spicie so I could taste them before I turn my yard in plantation of something I might foundt not so tasty. I have to decide wich spicies I will plant on best locations in my yard next spring and I would like to be shure for my favorites.
Hope U understand what I mean :).
Thanks.

Just wait, Ante... don't rush things too much, some things in life are worth waiting for, like eating tropical, homegrown fruit... Its different to use olive oil you bought and the one you made. ;)
Wait and I promise you won't be dissapointed.

Ante - if I were closer geographically I would - but as our local airmail takes a month, the result would be disgusting when it arrived!:ha:

Ante,
I am on board with you....I have only eaten store bought cavendish type...and some kind of fried plantain that some friends cooked up once.
It would be nice to have some sort of network set up so that us newbies could do some sampling. Or perhaps we just need to get 'rich and famous' and go travel the world tasting.

our time WILL come:ha::ha::ha:
I'm coming with you guys! ..... lately the Asian markets here have been getting Manzano and they are excellent but I find they have to be very ripe and there is a short window of perfection. Also occaisionally in Stop and Shop they have bananas just labeled "organic" from Ecuador. These have been my favorite so far ( not counting Gros michel from childhood) they don't ripen yellow but kind of an off colored "puke green" ....excellent quality for taste and texture though. I was just reading about this and it might not be the variety which I think might be nino but due to the fact that they weren't gassed to ripen faster.

I would say that of the ones you mentioned, Ice Cream (Blue Java) is by far the best flavored, then Orinoco and last would be Raja Puri. Ice cream has a somewhat similar flavor to a cavendish, yet sweeter and softer with more moisture. Orinoco is sweet, but drier and Raja Puri has a nice fragrance when peeled, but it's not quite as tasty, but still good. I know that doesn't help you to taste it, but at least I gave you something without cost. lol

This is a good example of how different people like different bananas! Of the 3 I would rate them the exact oposite with Raja Puri being first. I gave away my IC and threw away my Orinoco plants.

Mitchell, RJ - this is interesting and I think that the variations/different strains within a variety are quite marked. I have a Dwarf Orinoco that I am seriously thinking of relocating to the compost bin as the fruits are less than thrilling although the plant itself is very handsome. Now my tall Orinoco has fruit that ripen with an orange cast to the skin, and taste so good that the local Dominicans (who have a casual approach to gardens and plants) are asking for pups. I am almost reluctant to hand out spare fruit from this plant - except for the fact that it bears very heavily - currently 4 bunches in progress so I should be OK! lol! Also the first bunch on my Manzano was unexceptional, but the second bunch has been vastly different and better in flavour. I let them all ripen on the plant and treat them all the same regarding water, fertilizer etc. And I do find that most home grown bananas have to be very ripe to realise their true potential - even the ones picked green and ripened off the plant never behave like the store fruit but are often sweet and ready to eat while the skin is still pale green (never tried this with Orinoco). Sorry if this rant constitutes a thread hijack! Ooops!
