An MGIS publication lists the average fruit count at 110 for standard Orinoco in south America.

Here in the subtropics, I'd be very pleased to have 75 fruits. We're just no match for the amount of heat units accumulated over the year in Venezuela.

Typically, the Orinocos I have will average 5-6 hands on them and have about 6 or 8 on each hand... so 30-35 is pretty average. However, I can see that being a 'per mat' total, because I'll usually have 2 that bear in a mat.

I don't usually count them, but a big bunch takes 2 men to carry it, and as each fruit weighs 1lb +, there must be around 80 per bunch from the tall Orinoco, the Dwarf Orinoco seem to get much smaller bunches! Currently the tall mat has 3 bunches that will ripen a week apart - come Christmas/New Year I think I will open a roadside stall!!

There are also differences in local varieties, there is not just one 'Orinoco', but many different closely related ones. The equivalent in Hawaii is 'Largo', which on a purely subjective basis looks to me like it generally has larger bunches than its mainland counterpart. I will start to compile the bunch size data on them and maybe we can compare it to the mainland form. I cannot post photos right now, but I will try to soon.

My first 2 blooms ended up with 18 and 15--maybe with better care I can get up to an average of 30.

Yes Gabe - there are differences in the local plants - my tall one is especially good and ripens with an orange skin - the local Dominicans all want pups which I am happy to supply for free.

Here are a couple photos of 'Largo', perhaps not fully representative as I have seen larger bunches too. The fruit can get quite large however.

Hi, Gabe , If you cut the flowering just below the last hand of bananas, they would fattenand grow a bit longer.
I was looking at the musa ensete pstem by zoloff Very impressive. Does it bear fruit? If it does, IŽll have to get one, Alberto.
