Bob has inspired me to remember...
Bananas...the way they used to taste!!! OH MAN!! YUM!!
I got to thinking, (dangerous, I know:D), about how the corn flakes used to be bigger & stayed crunchier in the milk longer.
And how butter cookies eaten off my fingers like a ring as a child, tasted so much more rich & butter-ier than anything you can buy today.
What are some of the things that you remember tasted better as a kid?

My Daddy used to be stationed at El Toro Marine Base in California (lifer Marine), and Mom would take us kids to Newport Beach. There on the beach they sold what I believe now to be smoked salmon and frozen chocolate covered bananas on a stick. That was our meal when we went there and I haven't tasted smoked salmon like that or the chocolate bananas that good since. (I know that sounds hokey since this is the BANANA site - but that's the first thing that popped into my head).:islandsharkbanana:

No chemicals? It was unregulated open season to use chemicals in agriculture! DDT was introduced in the 1940's.
Besides the Helms bakery truck, I remember a Date shake was 35 cents at Dairy Queen on Redlands Blvd.

Ahhh... Date Shakes! MMmmmmmm!!!
I remember my grandparents used to take me out to the Dinosaurs by Palm Springs when I was a kid to get the amazingly good famous Date Shake from Hadley Orchards. Those were the days. Thank goodness the shake survived, and you can still get it there.

Well, as I read all this I can consider myself lucky living here in not so "developed" country. Thrue that as time is passing by more and more things are loosing "real" touch but we here still can frash "smell" meet, homemade cheese, drinks, turkish coffe and all buch of things. I talked with many ppls from all ower the globe this summer and they all found that awesome. We still dont have hard EU regulations and production rules and we still "breath free" with domestic food.

I think there were so many chemicals & preservatives in food back then, that's what made them taste so good. We still have a ways to go as far as all the packaged meals. Real cheese - in mac & cheese, tastes so much better than powdered cheese!
I used to love cotton candy but hate it now. I LOVED (& still do) theater popcorn with extra butter & grape drink. What they use for 'butter' is a real artery clogger though.
Did you know that in 60's (& I think 50's) we could not buy butter here? We (my parents) had to go to Ill to buy butter. We could only buy margarine (oh yum, all that hydrogenated oil!) because we were the dairy state. I know, it doesn't make sense!
In my late teens, everything tasted better if you smoked a little marijuana LOL. I've been allergic to it since :(
Oh yeah...Marc's Big Boy hamburgers! (in CA it was "Bob's" Big Boy) a real treat if we could afford it! Was a great teen hangout. They don't exist anymore.

Greg, I went to that Bob's Big Boy a couple years ago. Blasphemy! They kept the name, and they still serve hamburgers, but they have a Buffet there, and serve Chinese food?!?!? What's up with that???!!
I'm so fortunate to have 2 of my old favorites still within easy driving distance. 1) Bob's Big Boy in Glendale (which still serves the Big Boy Combo the way they used to). 2) Sambo's in Santa Barbara.
I made it a point to drive to eat at the peripheral Big Boys around SoCal, and None of them tasted the same. I went to the ones in Baker, Torrance, Yucaipa, and Victorville. Nada. In fact, I was sitting there eating the burger thinking how a Big Mac would be better tasting than that. AND - the malted shakes are not the same either :(
While Sambo's menu is pretty different than it used to be, the food there is actually a notch up from what it used to be, which is nice. So, if you're solely going to enjoy it just for being within the 'name' of the restaurant, I guess that's okay, but even the pancakes are different (better, yes), but if you were expecting the stick-to-your-ribs truck stop style pancakes, they have gone with the graces of the chain.

Yep! I remember that. There used to be one in Anaheim/Fullerton area too right off of Lemon, which you can still see the drive-in part of the restaurant, because the turned it into a Sonic. Completely not the same. No great Root Beer Floats, no amazing chili cheesy fries, and no hot dogs that taste like there's actually beef (or any other meat) in there.
However, there's an old one still in La Habra and Norwalk, and I think they are still owned by the original franchise from the 70's, if that makes a difference.

I remember walking down to the liquor store from grandma's house. (it was 3 miles outside of town and just down the dirt road from grandma's) Us kids were allowed inside...which wouldn't happen now...and we would buy penny candy...for, you wont believe it, a penny. We loved it. Heck, even when we didn't have money, we would walk down there and look in the dirt and bushes for money that people had dropped. We could usually find a few cents and would score on candy.
Back in the day, at least at our house, candy was not an every day thing. We went trick or treating, we got some candy in our stocking at Christmas, Baby New Year left the old candy orange slices, and the Easter Bunny left candy. Other than that candy was rare... except when we visited grandma and went down to the old 'Border Store'
...................
I also remember people eating, and enjoying, some things that most today would not...like kipper snacks and milk bread.
Still, most of the memories especially those with food, are great. It is hard to find tamales as good as grandmas venison tamales. Mom's spaghetti and meat balls...with real meat balls, were always a favorite. ( I guess there may still be a bunch of ppl that still make meat balls. Maybe it is only me that is too lazy and settles for meat sauce.)
Homemade rootbeer, which was common for family get togethers was as good as it gets....heck, it still is. The same for homemade icecream.
......
I just ate a wonderful dinner of navajo tacos a couple hours ago...and this discussion is making me hungry all over again.

damaclese hit upon some of the greatest differences that I remember:
We were all taught sound principles. Honesty, integrity, hard work, respect, loyalty, self-sufficiency, etc.
Maybe dad would give you a paddling if you did something stupid, but that would not hurt as much as if dad said that he was disappointed in you.
Family came first. For us it was God, family, country.... It was important and a part of every day life. If somebody needed help, you naturally helped them..not for what return you might get, but because they needed help.
My best friends were dad, and my brothers. There were many others but they were those with whom I first would choose to do things.
There was no x-box, ps3, wii, etc., instead we worked hard and played hard. Almost everybody was fit. Obesity was rare (relatively), as were, diabetes, heart disease, ADHD, etc.
Mom cooked our food. She didn't buy a can of food and warm it up. She didn't open a box, mix it, then cook it. I have long attributed the health of our family to good and proper nutrition and a healthy lifestyle...and it wasn't because those were the fad...rather because we had a fairly large family and that is what we knew and could afford.

No Safety standards for Cars Millions of Americans died needlessly
Woman made half the money men did

Children died of Polio and pneumonia

most people had no health insuring and didn't go to the doctor
if you got Cancer you died
if you had a hart attack you died
if you were diabetic you die before age 40
the average life expectancy in the US was 68 (1960s)
Woman could never hope to be elected to any public office

Fall Out Shelters! Yes I remember them walking to school the signs were posted on a few big hotels in the area. It meant you could go there - in their basements, when the sirens sounded for a air raid attack! I was so scared!
I remember going to the store for my Mom, buying a gal milk & a loaf of bread & getting change back for 50 cents. No big supermarkets then - just a family run grocery store on the corner there.
Same time (I was 7 or 8) I was waiting for a bus on the corner to go to my Grandma's house. I stepped back against a building on a steel grate & my foot went thru the grate & my whole leg was in there. I couldn't get my leg out (I was very skinny). The bus came & went & there I was looking like I was sitting on the ground w/ one leg. It started getting dark out & I was crying but tried once more to get my leg out & finally did it. No one noticed anything was wrong & I never cried out for help - was too embarrassed or thinking I did something wrong. I ran home & my Mom freaked out thinking I was already at Grandma's house. She walked out to the ph booth to call Grandma & explain. There was a ph booth on almost every corner for the many ppl who didn't have a phone.
I remember my Mom shoveling coal in the furnace on cold winter nights & then again in morning. Oh shut up...bad memories!

i remember having to mix the yellow food color in to margarine because it was illegal to sell margarine that looked like butter
That was the dairy industry's doing. They didn't want anyone mistaking that artificial product with real butter. Given how harmful trans-fats are, they may have been more on target than it would otherwise seem.
If you remember that yellow dye, then you will remember that it was called oleo back then, not margarine.

Duck and Cover (sheesh what were they thinking)
In high school I had a poster....
"In case siren sounds, immediately
1. Crawl beneath desk, table, or other sturdy object.
2. Place your head between your knees.
3. Cover your head with your hands
4. Kiss your @$$ goodbye.
In all seriousness, it may seem like taking cover would be useless in the event of a nuclear detonation. While that would be true out to a certain distance, there is a range beyond that where buildings may sustain damage but not be, um, you know, vaporized. Someone, somewhere, will be far enough away that they could survive the blast but have a roof fall on them, be cut by flying debris, etc.

Patty, yes, in fact, you can get in on the new trend, which is the new uprising of the Big Boy franchise in California. It seems that it was just too hard to give up the Big Boy Combo with the funky salad and the fries that were dunkable in EVERYTHING, including the little metal chocolate sauce ramekin for the Hot Fudge Cake.. .ring a bell??!!
Actually, there are several and a few new ones popping up all over, and YES, the funky chunky fat boy with the overalls and burger on plate still is around.. He is alive and well in a few of them, including outside of the one in Victorville (like the old days) and in the entryway of the one in Glendale.
The best part, is that you can still buy the Big Boy Plastic Piggy Bank, you can still get the AMAZING Big Boy Seasoned Salt!!.... and T-Shirts too.
Bob's Big Boy probably won't ever completely die in California, because this is where it all started, and as long as there are people who remember... there will be a Big Boy here. :)

Don't remember the hot fudge cake (?). I think they were just starting the piggy banks but I don't remember Tshirts here. Do they still bake those strawberry pies? Had great pies!
When I turned 18 I applied at a few restaraunts & one served alcohol..the manager told me to work at Marc's Big Boy because they gave good training, & then come back when I was 21. They were very disciplined & expected a lot from employees. Uniforms had to be perfect. Wasn't hard for me - I went to catholic school.
Oh yeah, they had a franchise to sell the Colonals Kentucky Fried Chicken at all the big boys here. My Dad really loved it when I brought a bucket of left over chicken home.
Any way, could I buy some seasoned salt & blue chees dressing from them thru you?:) Or, should I buy a franchise & open a big boy here LOL. Ha..."Patty's Big Boy" LOL. So nice to know they are still there - where they originated.

It seems rather odd to me that you can't get Big Boy dressing and season salt, because it's practically at every grocery store around. They still have their amazing 1000 island, the Ranch, and the YUMMY Roquefort, and Bleu Cheese in the refrigerated section.. YUM! I've even seen it in the Latino Markets "Roberto's Grande Boy" - kidding - But actually, I am thinking you can get the dressing at Costco, because my cousin in Lansing, MI gets it there, and they used to have "Elias Brother's Big Boy" chain up there. You may even be happy to know that it's now open when you visit Honolulu next time!: opener (http://www.bigboyhawaii.com/page_2.html)
I found a link to someone who can send you the seasoning salt. Write to: merchandising@bigboy.com
Let me know if you have any trouble, because I can go by BBB (excuse, right) and pick up some for you (how many do you want?) in a couple weeks or so, and I'll have a Big Boy Combo in your honor. :D

I just read some from my search. Big Boy is still hot in CA, Michigan & Ohio. It said the Marc's big boy here, ILL, MN & Iowa are now Perkins. I'll have to check it out. I don't think anyone here younger than 25-30 even knows of it. Nothing sold in grocery stores here from BB. I'll check it out more later.
Make sure you get that side of bleu for the fries when you order that combo!

Anyone Remember Pioneer chicken?
Don't laugh, but there's still a couple left open! There's one in downtown LA, and one somewhere around Arcadia - West Covina area.
Same amazing biscuits and same amazingly unhealthy super crispy chicken! lol It beat out KFC any day. This look familiar? lol

You people are making me soooo hungry!
Cheryl, I'd kill right now for a brawny lad or a swiss miss! Good thing we never had 'Pioneer' chicken or I'd kill for that too.
Ha ha, when they show fat guys holding up a platter of their food, it must be good! :)

I clearly remember something called a 5-star bar, which has since gone out of production. Also Eat-Mores. Carrots used to taste excellent, and when I left Canuckistan they were just these large bland orange things (since Ecuador, they're back to the spicy orange flavourbombs of my youth). And cauliflower in mom's white sauce.
But what I really find myself reminiscing over is a fresh-caught Arctic Char on the grill, or else Mooseburgers.

I worked there as a teen! Don't tell anyone but I used to cut strips off the biggest breast pieces and cook them for my dinner. Of course the rest of the breast looked about the same size as the others but they had more bone and less meat. :ha: Nobody ever complained though so I guess I did a good job on them. :)

I'M TELLING!!!
I've had moose, antelope, elk & buffalo burgers. They are all good, but venison burgers are crap! Only venison steaks & slow cooked roasts are good but their ground meat is only good in chili.

All game(except caribou) can be fairly good depending on how you cook it. Mostly it's got to either be rare or wrapped in bacon. Tonights dinner: Venison backstrap butterflied them pounded super thin. Stuff with cream cheese and scallion. Roll up like an ice cream log and wrap with bacon using toothpics to hold. Bake that in the oven once again not overcooking and served over egg noodles............good stuff. I have this one often.
Trust me there are ways to make every kind of game (except Caribou) not only edible but super pallatable as well. As far as burgers, adding a bit of beef or pork(my favorite) fat is the key as most game dries out too quickly.

I don't quite recall 'before' KFC, because when I was a kid, people used to embellish fights over which was better.. .lol.
I COMPLETELY forgot about the corn!! :D
The big stainless steel (pre-hotdog) roller... back and forth... back and forth... yum! Such a heart attack!
However, I DO remember now buying a side of Gizzards and dipping them in ketchup, thinking they were healthy because grandma used to order them! LOL - the German members are probably laughing right about now... like their ketchupdogs... sausages made out of anything from the beast. :)
Back before there was a McDonalds, Burger king etc in Northern NJ we had two great places around here. Stewarts which was famous for their root beer and is still around(but the food isn't as good anymore....it probably wasn't then either) and the best one was called Wetsons. They had a golden arch before McDonalds had the golden arches as far as I know and basically their only claim to fame was burgers, fries and thick shakes. We used to travel 20 minutes or so each way to get there as there wasn't really much fast food around in the late 60's..........of course the hippie ckicks serving the food didn't hurt the ambience for little me back then either I suppose.:ha:

Thanks...I will try venison/beef & venison/pork burgers next time.:)
I had my first ven. backstraps last year -I made on the grill just plain. Soooo good & tender I could cut it w/ a fork.
Bob, what's a good way to cook front shoulder? My hunter-venison-supplier-brother told me to not cook it w/ the bones in as it gives a bad taste, so I cut that meat off & grind it up.

I would agree that all game can be pretty good....BUT it does depend on how the game is taken care of in the field, how the meat is butchered, and how it is prepared and cooked.
I have eaten most common North American big game and much small and upland game. I have found them all pretty tasty. I have also eaten game, that others have cared for, that was not palatable. Unlike Bob, I even found caribou pretty good, but have only had it once.
I grind a fair bit of meat. As Bob said, venison is usually too dry for burgers unless you add extra fat. Without the fat it does make great burger just not for hamburgers. It is great in spaghetti sauce, it makes very good taco meat, and makes a good, lean meatloaf.
I agree that bacon is a wonderful companion to about any game. They grill together really nicely.
Teriyaki type marinades are also very good with venison.
1 cup soy sauce
+-2 cups water
1 medium onion sliced thin or diced medium
a clove or two of crushed garlic
a pinch or two of ginger
marinade it for 30mins - 3 hours. I prefer shorter times, as it gets more salty the longer it sits.
grill it up to preference. I prefer med-rare, and my wife prefers med-burned. Even with the above marinade, a piece of bacon wrapped around it, while grilling, is great.

ps...Bob, you must have had some bad experiences with caribou...
Patty, I have eaten many roasts with bone in, and have not had problems. Usually, however, I bone all my meat out. It is not for reasons of taste but versatility. I separate out muscle groups, into small roasts and freeze them. Later if I decide I want some steaks, it is easy to convert a roast to steaks..
Lately, however, we have been steaking the tenderloins and the backstrap, and bottling the rest...except for the ribs which we put in a slow cooker.

The problem with Caribou may be that mostly rutty, older, males are harvested (the same often applies to other hoven game). I'm just speculating here. I've had several whitetails that were hopped up on testosterone when they were harvested and smelled like hell.
I think that recipe sounds GREAT and using 1/2 cup soy sauce and 2 cups of wine would reduce the saltiness while adding some fruity zest.

Patty, I am fortunate enough to be able to take so many deer here over the season I mostly give the front shoulder to the dogs who are on a raw meat diet. I usually get 8-10 per year and have guys who give me all of theirs. The only thing I ever use the front shoulders for is chili and for sausage making.
Pete and Aaron, yeah all caribou taken are old rutting males who have been migrating so are full of hormones and somewhat run down physically. I just havent had a good cut of meat. I would guess the smaller females would be fine to eat but no one takes them.
