Finally what I assume to be the end of my collection. I got 4 "Gros Michel" from justj's divorce sale and 3 "Bluefields" after a long time with many bumps in the road from a grower in Hawaii. I assume the variety is "Highgate" but am not sure. The young ones with leaves have different markings.justj's are green( as the story goes they were TC plants found in a greenhouse in Wisconsin years ago with a metal tag with "Gros Michel" on it. The Bluefields have wine stains so we'll see. I still have one coming from a member who offered one a while back when the pups are ready (yes I still want it!)Please don't PM me for a plant. I'm keeping the first pup on each and already know who I'm going to offer the next 4 or 5 pups to should I be so fortunate. The rest will of course be offered to members when the time comes......Finally!

Congrats, Sir Bob of Jersey! Of course, you do realize that your collection will never be complete without the other two varieties of GM (bwahahahaha....)

Thanks Beth, I realize just fine.............hows that import license coming? I owe you something of an apology ( as well as Scot Nelson). I had argued with both of you that FHIA 23 gad no GM in it. I just learned yesterday after some research that one of the parents was in fact "Highgate" the other an "SH" cultivar from FHIA. Maybe at the time I didn't realize what Highgate was...........any way , it's all good.
Thanks!

WOOT WOOT! Awesome!!! Great to hear people are still keeping Gros Michel growing around the country. I kinda want one someday....I'd love to taste what a 'banana' used to taste like in the US LOL. Best of luck with yours...but they're in good hands, now, right?

I'll do my best. You wouldn't be dissapointed to taste them which was my inspiration for growing all I am. I remember the difference from ages ago and having talked to much older people they get truly excited about them.

Hi Bob, congrats on a killer find. I have been reading up on GM. It is on my must-have list. I would love to be on your waiting list, when you have one for sale/trade.

With you on that Bob!
Oh, to re-experience that 'childhood' banana.

I, being in the, ((Ahem)), older person...remembering the taste of bananas...

The day before my sister came home from the hospital.
Daddy & I having sliced yellow heaven on our corn flakes...Yep.
Want to taste that 'real banana' flavor, texture AGAIN!

(Chocolate, meat, cereal, most things) tasted better then, than they do to me now...
Whole 'nother thread though...

Very nice Bob!! I commend you and other east coast growers. It must take a lot of work and patience to take the plants in for the winter. I complain when the low is 50. I look forward to seeing pictures in the spring.

Thanks all, like I said I will be keeping the first pup on each as I do all my naners and there are a few folks I'll offer the rest to first. The rest will all go to members here. Hopefully next year produces a bounty and we can all share and spread them around so this variety is no longer lost to obscurity.

Good to see this. I hope they're labeled properly, and you got the real thing. I also hope you've got high ceilings, where you're going to put them. Like I've mentioned before, these were my first bananas, many years ago and, after a while they were pushing the tiles out of the suspended ceiling.

Hey John, fortunately I have the winter and next growing season before reality slaps me. I'm still looking for a place for your greenhouses so with a bit of ambition........maybe we'll get something done and have some tasty bananas.

Some pretty warm place comes to mind. :ha:
You have a fireplace, don't you? Nice, warm, 95°F all day long... Awhhh. They won't even have to feel the winter. :lurk:

What I've observed is that rare and unusual bananas don't like pupping, they just groooow all season long. Can't understand that irony...

Only one of the GM's has any bits of growth on it. The Bluefields are just sitting doing nothing at the moment. They are all on my front porch under a 400 watt metal halide so I expect some good growth soon. As soon as there's anything to show I'll put up some pictures.
