Central Texas area Lowe's have had 50% off their bananas and 75% off palm trees and other goodies too. You might want to check out your local big box store to see what they have and go rescue a nice plant or two!:woohoonaner: ~JaNan

None yet from my nearby Lowes and HDs; I check at least twice weekly; I'll check again tonight.
I can't seem to find bananas --plenty enough of birds of paradise. I've peeked into my Walmarts as well.
If not for the sales here, I'd still have no bananas today.

LOL! You have to bargain for your discounts here....
Currently on sale at the plantery up the highway: babacos, super dwarf orito, velutinas (!), a huge selection of heliconias (but why would anybody buy these, they're ditch weeds?!?!?), and a single, grumpy looking mandarin.

MJD - don't give up they will be. If you see one with a couple of sunburnt leaves - take it to the department or store manager and ask for a discount. Most times they will discount it by 50% (at Lowe's) - I really have to haggle at HD. They say they can return them for full price so why would they want to sell them cheaper?
Martin - Speedos! Gross!:0493:
Lorax - what are babacos and super dwarf orito? They sell heliconias here. We have ditch lillies - they are the orange lillies that grow in the bar ditches. Some places sell those too!
Cheryl - I always love bromeliads on sale, sometimes I find one I just can't walk away from.http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=23056&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=23056&ppuser=5614)

Var. Schefflera! On my list! I'll make a trip out there this weekend. Within about 15 minutes (or so depending on traffic) I can hit 3 Home Depots and 2 Lowes.

I picked up another banana today! Just labeled as Premium Foliage stuffed in an end cap display with elephant ear and caladiums. It's over 5 feet tall with 7 full leaves, just a beautiful plant. I think it is a Zebrina Rojo AND it has pups for $18.98. :woohoonaner:

Lorax - I Googled babacos and super dwarf orito. Do the babacos taste like papaya?
Nope, Babaco tastes like babaco... It's sort of a blend of sweet pineapple, pear, and nectarine with minor hints of dog breath. Less ripe, they're more like apples or pears and are used as apple substitutes (since apples and tropics don't mix too well), and more ripe they're only good as juice, where they give a slight sparkle/fizz to the texture. Very hard to describe. The plant though, resembles a papaya. Richard grows them and sometimes has pups. I think, although I'm not sure, that there are fruit pics in my gallery of babaco.
Super-dwarf Oritos are the same as regular Oritos, which is to say they're a Sucrier-group banana that produces short, very sweet fingers. The SD designation just means that the plant gets 6'-7' tall including its leaves before fruiting. There are comparative banana fruit pics in my gallery - the orito is invariably the smallest one.
Hope this helps.

We have 2 Home Depots, and one Lowe's within a few miles of here and they, basically, have had very little in the way of bargains, all summer. A few Kentia palms, and some Dracaenas, etc., but these are not discounted, because they're used for houseplants, and are not "end of season". Banana wise, the Lowe's and one HD had nothing. The other HD had up to 6 pieces of Dwf. Cavendish, in 6 inch azalea pots, on occasion. No discounts though - $10.00 each.
Oh well, in two weeks I go to the Florida Nursery Growers Assn. show, andI will find some bargains there.

... What's On Sale Where You Live?
absolutely nothing--zip, zero, nada! !
my nearest Home Depot which prides itself as being the "largest" HD in my area (I take this to mean having the largest nursery department) does not have a single banana plant. not one, not this year.
No markdowns. sigh. maybe towards the end of september--maybe.
you guys are so lucky. that zebrina is gorgeous!

At my local Lowe's all fruit trees and plants are 50% off. I bought seven ultra-dwarf apple trees. These are apple scions grafted on m27 rootstock. With the sale these tiny trees were a little over fourteen bucks each. I have (3) Fuji, (2) Anna, and (2) Dorset Golden. There should be some good pollination between those varieties. I also purchased two Chandler blueberry plants. These plants are reported to produce the largest variety of blueberry. I hope so, I could live w/ b-berries the size of cherries. On sale these were $3.50 (+ tax) each.

These Ultra-dwarf apple trees will be kept about five feet tall. I hope to get more and plant them in rows, orchard-style. I have wanted to have a mini-apple orchard in my small backyard since I viewed a web site called Gene's Backyard Orchard. Here is a link:
MidFEx presents Gene's Backyard Orchard (Introduction) - 97 dwarf apple trees in 2500 square feet (http://www.midfex.org/yale/intro.html)

No sales yet here that I've see. It's still 100 degrees, but they claim it will be in the mid 90's this week! I've been anxiously waiting for the palms to go on sale. Bananas are a rare find here. The only place I've seen them is at Lowe's, but overpriced and common varieties.

OMG YES...I completely agree! We don't have any bananas or tropicals sold at Homo Depot or Blowes here (take no offense, that's just what I always call those stores by...no disrespect intended, trust me). They don't even sell any palms beyond the few they have in their indoor houseplant section.
