Hopefully, I can contribute to this exotic forum in a positive way. I started this adventure 3 years ago - not much time and experience indeed. However, expanding... and with some theoretical background too.
I got infected with exotic gardening in Florida (working for couple of years at UF, Gainesville).
Now, I am back in cold Poland for some time already (what a mistake! brrrrrrrrr!). I left the USA just after September 11... today is the date.
Trying to warm up myself and my family with this gardening experiments.
I will post some photos soon for those interested. I have already admired one garden in Lucern - congratulations! (I like the city very much too).
My best!

Dear All,
Thank you for the warm reception! I am sorry for my delayed answer. It's been very bussy time for me... But I was able to enjoy your answers from the beginning. Nice!
Eric, now it is realy bad weather here in central Europe and my banana clump looks like the highest pile of garbage in the neighbourhood! Like Kafka's: "There is an infinite amount of hope in the universe... but not for us." I have attached however some photos showing it alive.
Cheryl, in zone 8a fruits can fly like banana but in a zombie zone they fly like potatoes at the very best. Nevertheless, I still count on global warming :waving:
Hi Bryan! but please be careful with dosages of these specialities... you would be better off staying with bananas!, although brain plasticity give us always a hope.
Bob, yes with Zywiec it is far safer I guess (normally). I had a few last evening and now have a headache...
Howard, 7a seems for my like a perfect zone: a lot of possibilities for experimentation and still on the edge sometimes... perfect! I am jelous. If I could change a location in the future I would look probably for 7a-7b climates.
Cherokee-Greg! Yeah, you do not have rain there, I've heard... in one song. Too perfect to be true, though...:goteam:
All the best Joan! I am so curious what you grow there! That's a challenge!
Hello Ante! I brought two crape myrtles from your beautiful country this year. I hope they can flower here in zombie zone - to be found out next summer...
It seems that you realy take advantage of this lovly climate... (what a collection!!!)
Thank you again guys! I posted some photos of my tiny garden. I will add comments later on, when time allows.
Warm regards from Poland!

Hello, Ante
Yes, I was on holidays near Zadar (Zaton). First time in Croatia for us. Sunsets are realy nice there, Hitchkock was right. It was overall very nice experience. And I was able to speak Polish and people understood me! In other way around unfortunately it did not work...
I must admit that I was looking for exotics here and there with special focus on crape myrtles and in one nursery I bought white and (probably; because not flowering, and they could not tell for sure) red variety.

Hello Ante, Hello Jack
I will keep in mind Makarska! Although I must admit that for holidays I look for places with no Poles at best (difficult but doable :ha:). You need change of the climate in many dimensions from time to time...
Jack,
Sort of sociological observations in Bratislava?
I appreciate all situations where there is a good contact with people and no prejudices.

Sort of sociological observation in any Slavic country. :D It's just way too cool. I've never felt better in any other country (and I've travelled all over the Europe, except for Russia), Germans and Austrians are too strict, some other nations are rather closed to foreigners...
Besides, there's lot of common history between Poland and Svk, if nothing else, than our never ending gratitude for what you were doing (saving our asses) from 1500 to 1526. Needless to say that the entire Europe would maybe be speaking Arabic by now if it weren't for your cavalry (strongest in Europe til 1939)...
Btw. did you know that Rohan from The Lord of The Rings was inspired by Poland (land of horseman and horse-keepers).
I visited Poland on several occasions (usually in summer, like in May), when the temps were great and strong storms created excellent atmospheres and scenerios.
Here are some pics from my visit to Krakow in... well, long time ago... Poland, as I remember it (trip to Krakow, Wieliczka, Oswiecim, pics include only Krakow and Wieliczka, don't want to show that concentration camp)

One great trait of Polaks is that they like to show their culture and keep their millenia long traditions. Very nicely playing couple.

Soooooo many stairs in Wieliczka (former Salt mine and also a safehouse in case of war...)

Yes Eric, that jacket is the same as you've seen before, it was 10°C down there year-round.
So Ante, wanna join me next year? Will make a cool trip somewhere you've not been before.

It's been quite a time...
But the Spring is somewhere else... still.
Jack,
Thank you for so warm words in cold times! This year, on the way back from beautiful Croatia during summer holidays I have passed through Bratislava, but unfortunately had no time to appreciate it... Then, we went to Krakow. Your photos reminded me this time, thank you!
I had no idea about Rohan... that's interesting.
I hope you all keep warm there guys!
Thanx Jeff!
I will be back soon.

Welcome from Ecuador, Pawel. If I was able to grow bananas in Canada (I was! And other members here also do it...) you'll be able to grow them in Poland. Best of luck!
Jack and Ante, you can both shut up about tropical countries and snow. I can see the glaciers from my balcony!
