I just heard on a radio staion w/ fun facts, that to slow down ripening on a bunch of nanas from grocery store (or your plant!), separate each nana from the bunch. The separated, individual ones ripen slower.
I did not know this (as many of you prolly already did)
I'm going to try this w/ a bunch of 8-10. I'll take 4-5 separate ones off the bunch & see how they all ripen. :) :)
Also, for the heck of it, just heard on news that a 24 yr old woman dressed in a monkey suit, stole a $50.00 styrofoam banana from a display at a gas station in Fon du Lac (north of here). They caught her on video LOL.

She was caught on video but did they caught the girl? I am just curious as for the judge to decide specially if the girl is dressed in a monkey suit.
The monkeys always try to steal bananas. They can't help it.

I'm sure she was caught if they know it's a woman and that she's 24 yrs old. Someone musta ID'd her from the video. Not many ppl dressed in a monkey suit this time of year LOL.
Anyway, wondering if anyone knew about the ripening thing w/ nanas. The 'boys' (Mike & his son) always buy large bunches & the last 2 -4 nanas get black & I throw them in w/ compost.

I heard about that woman in the banana outfit. My brother use to work for Hostess and had to dress up as a twinkie...we still make fun of him today.

That's interesting...I'll have to try that! Thanks for the info, Patty. Whenever I buy a bunch, by the end of the week the last few are pretty brown/squishy. Maybe if I removed a few when I got the bunch they'd be good by that later time!

This is pretty much true for any fruit, the further away they are from other fruits the slower they will ripen. This is because of the natural release of ethylene gas during ripening which speeds along ripening. The more fruits in close proximity, the more ethylene is available for all of the fruits. This is the same reason why it is suggested that to speed up the ripening of bananas (it works with other fruits too), you can put them in a bag (which traps the ethylene and keeps it close) with other fruits. Ethylene is the gas used in the ripening chambers in the commercial supply chain as well. Another useful tip is not to keep ripening fruits near cut flowers either, the ethylene speeds up the maturing process and can cause them to prematurely wilt.

Those last few bananas of the bunch always go to Banana bread if I can't eat them in time. I think they need to start re-running the chiquita commercial that talked about being ripe when they are "flecked with brown" because I know people who won't touch a banana with brown spots on it.
