What's the difference between Musa acuminata ssp. zebrina, Musa acuminata ssp. Sumatrana (rojo)?

Originally, ssp. zebrina and ssp. sumatrana were 2 distinct subspecies, but the horticultural identity of each has been mixed up and lost in the trade. Now they are used as synonyms. I have seen about 5-6 different forms of red leafed M. acuminata, all of them labeled as M. acuminata ssp. zebrina. I believe ssp. zebrina has green immature fruit and ssp. sumatrana has red immature fruit (among other differences), but there are also other subspecies that have similar fruit too. So for now, they are more or less synonyms in the trade because no certain identities are known.
The plant shown is definitely a M. acuminata, and not M. sikkimensis.

Yeah, looks like a 'blood banana' (zebrina) to me! Very nice and healthy! Nice plant!

I agree with the Zebrina. It looks just like mine. (See my recent posting, "My little Zebrina", in the Main Banana discussion section.)

If you scroll up a little, in this thread, Gabe gives a pretty good explanation. But, whatever the technical name, they are related, and you got a nice plant.

Apparently they're confused too. My plant from Home Depot, tagged zebrina, looks exactly the same!
Thanks for the explanation Gabe.

BTW.....I forgot to mention about my banana that I can't identify....as the older leaves mature, they lose the red blotches and turn just green, I know some of you have stated that its Zebrina, but I don't think so....I'm not sold on that one yet! Anyone out there that has any idea, post it here, or email me at jungb@esagelink.com
Thanks Much!

Bananadude,
Sorry to hear that you do not believe what we are all saying about your banana. I really don't know what it will take for you to accept what we have told you. Pete, you know good and well by looking at his pics this is not a bordelon!!!! Many bananas are hard to id without the bloom/fruit, but not this one. Hopefully, there will be someone on this forum or another will give you the answer that we have already given you and you will accept it...

Huh? I didn't realize that it was the same person, I just said that Bordelon do that. Sorry.
Btw...if Gabe were to call it a Saba (or a pine tree), I would have confidence to call it that as well..

So everyone can see the diversity out there, here are bunch photos of 5 different M. acuminata subspecies that would all be called by the same name in a nursery: rojo, zebrina, sumatrana, blood banana, christmas banana...they are all clearly different plants but they are not distinguished in the trade. Also keep in mind that the scientific classifications and taxonomy of these is not as well understood or developed as most hobbyists would like. There is a lot of diversity out there, but sometimes these plants reach the nurseries before taxonomists even have a chance to classify them, so consequently they are all thrown under the same name.
