Hi all
I was wondering if anyone has grown these varieties and had eaten them. I have been unable to find a reliable source about the rajapuri. Supposedly its one of the more tasty varieties out there, but on various garden forums people have really been negative about this variety. Are cardaba really the best cooking banana out there? I was also told they are great out of hand as well, which I find a bit hard to believe. How does goldfinger taste it seems they are on the same level as store bought bananas from what I have been able to gather. My taste tend to be more of the sour and sweet with lots of aroma, than just all sweet. I prefer lady finger of the asian variety .
thank ahead of time

My raja bloomed and produced a bunch of bananas last year. Ate some as they were and made banana pudding with the rest. They were really good, but didn't taste anything like chicken ;-)

Hi, I bought my Raja Puri from Willisorchard but I haven't posted pictures here to have it verified yet. Here is the link Willis Orchard Company: Banana Trees (http://www.willisorchards.com/category/Banana+Trees)

I googled WillisOrchards review and found this,The scoop on 'Willis Orchard Company' (http://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/c/6348/) I've ordered blueberries and fig trees from them in addition to the bananas and everything lived so far. Figs are hard to ID until they fruit so I don't know if I got what I paid for yet. I still haven't positively ID'd the bananas yet. They don't seem to be associated with TyTy. WillisOrchards has about 50/50 reviews. That might be the nature of the business. They are shipping perishable products to people with different gardening skill levels. In my area, Massachusetts you have to get fruit trees in the spring from local nurseries. After that your out of luck. Heres a discussion on GardenWeb about whether they are associated with TyTy.Willis Orchard Co. - Fig Forum - GardenWeb (http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/fig/msg0913170923431.html)
Unless I find out that my bananas and figs are not what I ordered, I'd say I'm satisfied with them.

Well my question is now what does rajapuri taste like exactly?

They taste sweet with a little acidity. Similar to Manzano.

Good. I like manzano. And I have a blooming raja puri. If I like it then I can grow some more. I take it it is a desert banana. Right?

well if they are just sweet, without any unique taste, I would think buying store bought bananas are a better way to go or goldfingers since they yield is more.

RJ is sweet and slightly acidic, not anything like a store-bought Cavendish that tastes slightly sweet with zero acidity and usually a little green tasting. Raja Puri won't disappoint your taste buds.
Also keep in mind that unless you live somewhere that is great for growing bananas you will not get the same overall yield or fruit size they do on the plantations. I have Dwarf Cavendish that's almost ready to flower for the 3rd time that will be removed shortly and replaced with something that has better flavor.

I think that Mcguy has already made up his mind not to grow Raja Puri . it will be hard to convince him I think. He has indicated all negative post on RJ.
Everyone has its own liking. Tastes is relative to the individual.
I thought Manzano is one of the best tasting.
So Mitchel, dwarf Cavendish is some banana you don't like? I might do the same and plant something else other than DC. Too bad I have lots of them and SDC. Besides I am running out of room so I might have to remove them. Besides SDC and DC is a little cold sensitive in my area.

I would grow the RP over the DC.The RP has a huge trunk, very beautiful, and is very stout. It has a good growing height and the fruit will taste better than any store bought banana.Everyone's taste are different, but the Raja should be your pick.

I thought they would taste different than store bought when picked fresh and ripe but they don't taste much different at all, and after being spoiled by the flavors of Raja Puri and the likes I just can't justify keeping them. You may like the flavor though, who knows.

Thanks Greenie. Now I am convinced to grow more of RP.
