View Full Version : shipping question
I am going to attempt it but wanted anyones input that may have experience.
Shipping a banana plant from US to canada, been told and have read that it may take up to 2 weeks+ to clear customs. Anyone ship to/from canada, any suggestions on making it as easy and quick as possible? Thanks

I sent Cedar Dave a pup last year via UPS that was intercepted and consfiscated. I sent a replacement pup via USPS and it made it through. Could just be hit and miss, maybe someone was talking a coffee break and let it slide.

Hi Wolf, thanks.:waving:
No, no one that i know of...........i'm sure this will work out fine.....i have faith :02:.........if not, i will check shops here to see what i can come up with.
I just recently had a friend from Pittsburgh send me cuttings and she dropped hers in a corner mailbox, and wrote "gift" on the front and i got it in 8 days from when it was sent, so hopefully this should be good.
You are very right....SNC was very generous to do this :)

Well First of all im very sorry that you have to make these accusations that i haven't received very many bananas from the states , because i have look in my gallery i have ic from OK. I have many more just haven't taken pics of them yet because i have been so busy. I have just received Kru, Orinoco, dwarf green, Bordelon, Blue java, Raja, pink velutina and a 2 from Vancouver when i was there in July, Esette i dont know how to spell that and a sdc. I have gotten all of these this summer starting in Mid July. And the kru& Orinoco came a few days ago like i said. And those are the ones with the Note as of all the other nanners have had it. Im not too sure about up there in BC but here in southern Ont there is a customs declaration notice we get when plants are shipped over or anything for that matter. And that thing about ebay i have looked on ebay and seen plants with low prices but havent gotten them because i need a credit card which your right i dont have because im 14. I really hope this clears some of it up for you.
Thanks,
Matthew

I just checked with Agriculture Canada's website. It states that
The page for Importing plants from the US to Canada is currently
under revision.
This is good news because
Can you post the site here (Agriculture Canada's) ?

heres what I do... ship them by usps.... never list it as a plant.... call it almost anything but. garden ornament or christmas ornament...garden gnome etc. I have recieved every plant I have ever ordered this way........I have tried fed ex and ups for faster shipping but lost them every time. You will need papers for customs and will be jumping thru hoops if you try that way.. its not worth it. Unless you plan on inporting alot.. this is your best bet. just my 2cents

Matt
Wow! Great info shot, Matt! :lurk: A picture's usually worth a thousand words, eh?
BTW Wolfebc, Matt is Not a liar. I packaged & sent him a Blue Java (aka Ice Cream) pup a while back. I plan on sending him as many Banana pups of as many varieties as he wants, anytime he wants them (provided I have varieties he likes). I've seen his pictures and have been in contact with him. Also, I do NOT consider personal attacks to be in good keeping with the friendly nature of our group nor a good point of Netiquette. If any member's dialogue ISN'T Totally Impeccable & beyond reproach, well, nobody's perfect. I believe there are Moderators who would readily agree.
As I've said in many Intros, this is a FRIENDLY and informative site.... I think it should STAY that way, don't you.
I called the U.S. Postal Service prior to shipping the Blue Java to Matt. They checked their records & assured me that there were "no restrictions on sending banana plants to Canada". I sent the package & it arrived in about a week.
WOLF
Wolfebc: I have alerted a Moderator to your "member bashing" activities. You will be recieving a PM soon. The matter is no longer in our hands.
Also: I read your last post. It does not merit response.
I'll be sixteen before spring, Don't call me kid.
Also, as many many members can tell you, my original Username was "Michael James". Oh, an I used "Paint" program to erase my address. If Wolfebc ever showed up at our house, my dad would probably.... well, Wolfe sure wouldn't like it :ha: !
Okay. I was in a hurry the day the package was mailed to Matt so didn't take photos. Matt took pics when my package made it to Newmarket Canada so I borrowed his. Here are pictures of the package showing all the stamps & stuff on it. Notice that one of the papers says "Live Plant" (the green paper & lower-left of the red stamp-mark). Jan Told them it was a Banana Plant before she signed it and I WAS there an heard everything.

excuse me i have recived many many banana plants from the US and each one has had this customs note , why do you think ii would be lieing about this ? there is the full note for customs card. with my name address and so on . I have not been buying plants from websites ie: going bananas, because i need that cirtificate which costs 50 dollars and i dont want to spend that money for a few plants i can buy from very nice members on here.
I have other packages i can take pics of that do have the green one on it like from eric i still have boxes with the thing still on it. I told my parents about this little problem with you and they said its not worth talking abiout this with you , you say all my pics are fake. i have had it with you Eric know im not lying and the main Guy Jarred the owner on this site sent me a plant last Dec. I Dont know why you are acting this way but its gotta stop or you should leave the form , comming in here saying im lying about haveing nanners sent from the US. you are nuts , i think you should give up because i have not lied about one thing since iv'e been on this site same time as you , but i go on every day un like you.
I dont know what your problem is.
Matt
Hi Ante,
I alerted Jack & had him read the thread. He is working on the solution, now.
Thanx for the concern,
Eric
I'll be 49 in a month so no one can call me kid. For the record anything over a certain weight I believe 6lbs must be declared on a commercial customs form whether you are a business or not......less than that a different form.
Why call all this attention to the issue? What's the beef? There's too much nastiness going around and for what? I thought we were all banana growers looking to help each other..........THAT is the spirit of this place and should remain so.
Eric.........well spoken kid!:ha:
Wolfebc: The purpose of this site is Friendly discussion & humour. Minors, such as Matt, should Never visit here under threat of personal "character" assault. Members should be treated with courtesy & patience. Regardless of age, obviously vicious slurs on personal character should be avoided at all times.
I hadn't seen the box again after the day I mailed it. You can verify this through the U.S. Postal Service branch in Norman, Oklahoma (it is the only branch in Norman).
1-800-275-8777. it's a toll-free phone number, there is no charge.
Look at Matt's Avatar then again at these pics that Matt took the day the box arrived. Notice the similarities between the 2 photos (especially the furniture). Notice also the Toronto Star newspaper strewn about the table.
This is a Valid case of a package being sent to Newmarket Canada by me by USPS & as a "Live Plant". The above phone number can verify that. While speaking with them, ask if there are any restrictions on sending a banana plant to Canada & let me know what they say. It should be the same as what they told me. Feel free to also inquire about the date of shipping & the date of arrival, if you like. - Respect others & that respect will be returned.
Other views on shipping & other info should, yes, be shared & considered. Let's be friendly, just the same. Experience is the Greatest teacher.

I don't think Wolfe is bashing. Sorry:(
Just his opinion
Noted.
If Patty's statement seems a little unusual, it's because all of Wolfe's posts have been deleted from the thread.

Thanks for the input everyone, sorry it got a little off topic too.:bananas_b
I will be sure to let everyone know when my package arrives, i have faith that it will.:birthdaynana:
Fingers crossed!!:waving:
Thanx Penny :). Threads don't usually get THIS off-topic but at least ended up with lots of shipping info  ! Best of Luck :) !
For Newcomers to the thread:
This is a Friendly Thread about Shipping plants to other Countries, esp. Canada.
Posts 7, 11-13, 17, 18, 21, 22, & 24 : These will seem unusual since the Wolfebc posts were all deleted from the thread.
Posts 13, 17, 18, & 22 : Kaczercat's frantic responses = the result of "Intensive Interrogations" contained in those now-deleted posts.
POST 15 = Link to "Canada Food Inspection Agency / Plants" contains useful info on U.S.-to-Canada Canadian plant shipping laws.
POST 16 = One member's personal experiences with UPS & FED EX with respect to mailing plants to Canada.
Hope this explanation clears the Thread up a little. It's still a great thread for posting Int'l shipping info & experiences.
Matt, my dad said the same thing, just not to talk to him at all. Think that's real good advice. Glad Ur Foxtail fern's doing great!! Gotta try one of those, myself!! :woohoonaner:

My concern is with people who carelessly ship plants from one location to another. You should first check what common pests and/or diseases at your location might be a problem in the location you are shipping to. For more information, see this thread: Why I use synthetic pesticides (http://www.bananas.org/f9/why-i-use-synthetic-pesticides-8688.html#post84548).

When I posted yesterday, all I saw was an 'opinion', but then it got a little out of hand. I got a PM from Wolfe saying it was him that deleted all his posts here, and his profile. I hate to see this so, Wolfe, settle down & join back in so we can all learn & have fun:)
Good point, Richard. I tried to minimize risks, when sending Matt the Blue Java, by rinsing off the corm & roots & wrapping them in most, clean paper towels. I put that in a plastic baggie, with holes, to maintain moisture during the trip.
But some do like to send them potted. There is a special, pest/disease free soil-mix many companies use. This is also worth investigating.
Thanx for the link, Richard :) ! I'm still pretty new to all this shipping stuff.

OK, I know you meant well by your efforts but that could be just the right way to send an unwanted root fungus or virus. Consider taking the extra step of either:
coating the surfaces with a rooting medium that contains fungicides and viricides, or
dipping the whole thing in a 1-ounce per gallon solution of Liqui-Cop (or equivalent) in water

Never used Liqui-Cop. Is it the same, or does it have the affect as using a dilute bleach solution?
Richard

Never used Liqui-Cop. Is it the same, or does it have the affect as using a dilute bleach solution?
Household bleach is a single ammonium and destroys a respectable number of fungi and a few bacteria-born viruses.
Triple-ammonia compounds like Physan-20 and Nacossan have a broader range.
Liqui-Cop is a Copper Ammonium complex sold under the Monterey Lawn and Garden Products brand. The additional presence of copper gives it the widest range of these three and is still very safe for food crops. The copper also is bad news for any mollusks (snails, slugs) that might be lurking about.
Thanx for the great info, Richard :) ! Next time, I will definitely be using Liqui-Cop to be completely safe. Bio-hazards are always a vital concern.
