Things are not right here. I have several jalapeno and ancho chili plants growing in containers, also cubanellas, and they seem to be awfully slow. Although there is fruit on all of them they don't get a thick flesh. I grow organically and make sure they get enough fertilizer and water. They are outside in almost full sun. The containers are the black plastic 12 inch pots that ought to be big enough for them. HELP What can I do to speed up their growth and get better fruit?

Yes, I have Luke! It was good, a "different" sort of flavor. I started at the tip which wasn't hot at all and nibbled towards the top. The closer to the stem the hotter it became. I guess I would say almost a smoky flavor. It was a bit to hot for me at the top but my husband loved them! The fruit is not very big, so it was an interesting taste test. The one I had only had 4 seeds in it.
Thanks Sherry, I liked that one a lot! :)

The smokey description of the fish pepper sounds great! I will have to pick up some seeds for next season. This 'off-season' i am trying something new. I actually dug up my carribbean red habanero, orange chitchen itza, and bulgarian carrot plants and potted them up. I am going to try to overwinter them indoors next to a window. I have heard of people overwintering them, then planting them back out for a 2nd, 3rd and even forth season and they end up being the first and largest producers rather than replanting from seed each year.
Anyone have experience with this?

Oh yeah Luke, I have lots of experience with over-wintering pepper plants. They'll actually keep producing over the winter if you can keep things warm and sunny enough.
Although it's true, you can keep pepper plants going from year to year, I find new ones grown from seed each season give the highest yields. Older plants can be spindly with tough woody branches, and only bear a few fruits here and there. You can try though and see for yourself. ;)
Many more blossoms are developing on my 'Marble' plant...

Thank you. That's a variety I got from Janan called 'Hot Marble'. It's a very ornamental plant but the peppers are pretty hot and tasty too. :D
I'm sure you'll have lots of luck, Luke. Just shower your pepper plants once a week, paying special attention to the undersides of the leaves. Growing edible plants indoors, inevitably attracts spider mites. Showering the plants each week will keep them away. :)
You can also prune tough woody branches on older pepper plants so that new ones will grow, bearing more fruit. Have fun messing around and experimenting. :goteam:

has any one grown out Boonie pepper from Guam? a guy brought me a seedling from the peppers he grew while he was stationed there. It supposedly gets up to 8' tall, so I'm currently growing it as a topiary, with plans to make it into a "pepper tree" we can sit under. It's about 7 feet tall. Supposed to be a lot like one of the longer thai hots.

So far my dug up garden pepper plants are still alive and kicking. I pinched off almost all of the fruit and buds when I brought them in. I probably should have even pruned them to help cope with the transplant shock but, I just picked a fresh Caribbean red habanero and a chitchen itza yesterday. They must have been hidden down in the foliage but when walking by the bright ripe colors showed through! The only problem I'm having now is the hab has a serious issue with aphids. I usually just use a mix of rubbing alc, soap and water in a spray bottle. We'll see if I can wipe them out before they damage the plant too much
-Luke
EDIT: oh and the fourth pepper plant we dug up and potted was a volunteer. No idea what it is but it is very compact/bushy with upright red peppers. Since I do not know what variety I will not eat any fruit from it but it is doing the best of all the transplants.

We decided to try just the tip off of one. It was even hotter than the red ones we grew outdoors this summer. You should have seen my hubby's face, it turned absolutely purple! I didn't try to eat as much of it as he did.
There is no way anyone could eat a whole one of these peppers.
I think maybe it was even hotter because it was growing in a small pot all summer in the greenhouse. The plants would wilt down sometimes in between watering, so they were like the angry onions on the Hardee's commercial a while back.

I have grown Habanero, Scotch Bonnet and Datil peppers for years and haven't paid much attention lately to what else is out there. While "browsing" at my local plant nursery a few months ago, I wandered thru the pepper aisle and saw quite a few peppers that I have never heard of. So, I figured I would pick up a couple just for fun.
Here is one of them. Called a Trinadad Perfume. The nursery owner (also a chile-head) said that they look and taste just like a Habanero, but had no heat. Does look a little like a Hab (not quite as orange tho, but maybe if I let them go a little longer), cutting it open it smelled like a Hab, took a bite.........no heat. Tho I have to admit I was a little apprehensive about taking that first bite.:ha:

One of the others I got is called Jamaican Hot Chocolate. No fruit on that one yet, but I a guessing it will be like a Chocolate Scotch Bonnet.

i have hot peppers! =D i found this hot pepper on one of my plants. i potted the hot peppers up too fast when we moved so its one of 4 different kinds but i will know which one when it gets bigger. it could be Cubanelle, Early Jalapeno, Ring of Fire Cayenne, or New Mexico. Theres tons of flowers and another tiny pepper on the same plant so i will be taking more pictures. =D

today's hot pepper chore: make hot sauce, because the weather was warm enough to open some doors for ventilation....
first picture, chocolate bhut jolokia tabasco type sauce. This is chocolate bhut jolokias, vinegar and salt, blendered up together and strained.
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=47196&size=1
second picture, these are other ones I did today.
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=47195&size=1
Varietal batches of green bhut jolokia, yellow scotch bonnet, trinidad scorpion, and aji limon. And a mixed batch with all of those plus fatalii habanero.
I'm actually scared to try the bhut jolokia sauce straight because I have tried the peppers straight. I guess chili will have to be on the menu tomorrow so I can try it...

And the Purple super hot is really getting loaded. I normally throw these pepper plants away when they get spindly, but I was waiting for the peppers to ripen on this one. Now I wonder if I should have tossed the other ones?
