Dean, you'll wanna get rid of those spider mites before they take down your plant. Mites can wipe out a pepper plant real fast. The leaves will start to grow deformed and the plant will deteriorate more and more until it's just a stick with no leaves.
Blast that baby with a hard spray of water each day until they're gone. Even when you think they're gone though, they're not. Eggs keep hatching so keep spraying regularily. This will put the run to them. Be sure to spray the undersides of the leaves where the mites reside.
When I grow pepper plants indoors, I shower them 1-2 times a week as a preventative measure in keeping mites away. It works and you won't find even one on my leaves. :D
Good luck!

Um JaNan, I think you've got some explaining to do! :ha:
Here's the first blossom that opened this morning on one of the so-called "marble" plants in a pot...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC03655.jpg
What the heck?
The blossoms were supposed to be purple! :ha:
I had a feeling the plants looked totally different but I thought maybe that's how they grew in pots. Too funny! :ha:
It's kinda cool though, and when the fruits form, we can figure out what it is...

:ha: Weeeeeeeellllllllll! I don't know!
I only had three peppers, the hot marble, the Jigsaw, and the Black Pearl. I bought a couple of sale peppers that weren't tagged with a name. One pepper was red when ripe and had a jalapeņo shaped pepper but small. And the other one had the skinny "J" shaped red ripe pepper like a Chili pepper (it wasn't tagged with a name either).
I actually sent you a marble fruit pod with a few loose right, or no?
That's the lowdown of what it could be. Oh, I also had Gold sweet bell pepper seeds, but they are a lot larger seed than all those dwarfs.
That's all I had at the time in December when I sent your box. :) Now of course I have your seeds.

Some of my favorites:
Pasila Bajio, very mild but has a smoky flavor that is great in sauces - esp. mole.
Fresno, mild but fruity.
Ancho Gigante, the perfect chili pepper for stuffing.
Italian Roaster, about the same heat as jalapeno but much better flavor and size.
Serrano, medium for people accustom to peppers, hot for others.
Bulgarian Carrot, medium-hot with great flavor.
Habanero (orange), hot with great fruity flavor.
Here's some more information on peppers: Richard's Chili Pepper Guide (http://www.plantsthatproduce.com/guides/ChilePepperGuide.htm).

The Anaheim and Poblano are whole peppers not seeds. Can I dry the seeds and plant them or should I put them in the refrigerator first?
The dark green pepper is the Poblano.

Congrats on the new pepper seeds, Kevin. I just sowed another type a couple nights ago, called "Prairie Fire".
Plus too, I had forgot that I traded with someone recently for some lemon cayenne, which produces yellow cayenne fruits. "Long Red Cayenne" is one of my most favorites for heat as well as excellent flavor. Hoping the yellow ones might be just as good.
Here's my "Little Blue" hot pepper in my aero-garden tonight. I've been growing this variety for a few years now and not only is it a very ornamental plant, but the fruits are surprisingly hot too...

If those peppers were grown within 1/4 mile of other pepper plants, then the seeds will likely produce a hybrid of whatever pollen the insects brought to the host plant. This is why I choose my seed sources carefully. A good seed farmer has a separate greenhouse for each variety so that the flowers are pollinated in isolation.

OK, I think the JigSaw blossom is white tipped and outlined in purple. The color that the leaves have are so dramatic they have that "PIZAZZ" qualityand I would think that would show up right away. All of the peppers with the exception of the Black Pearl are petite, because that is what I am attracted to. You can see my hand holding the sale pepper, I think it was a 3 or 4 inch pot at the most and just covered in peppers. You can see the JigSaw have the same shape but were quite a bit smaller than the NOID pepper. Maybe the small pot stunted the growth too. I don't know! Maybe with your potent fertilizing schedule they have gotten larger?
That's about as much info that I can provide. I'm glad you like them anyway! ~J

Yeah, your variegated leaves are so large looking! Very pretty! I think you asked me one time about whether that pepper was "true to seed". I had read somewhere that variegated plants in general were unstable and I made a presumption from that. Maybe you have a whole NEW pepper plant! I think that would be exciting!!!
I can see purple veins in the little AG pepper. Does it seem to have more variegation than the large one? Do the leaves look like they are going to be small or no? I could tell right away that my mixed bell peppers were going to be large with large leaves.
I am anxious to see that little dwarf bell you have going. I love dwarf plants! I hope it is a chocolate one. :ha:

I'll show a shot of that mini-sweet pepper in the sweet pepper thread shortly...
I think the leaves on the 'jigsaw' in my aero-garden won't be that big but maybe a bit bigger than the 'marble' and the 'little blue'. It does seem to be more variegated than the larger one and much sooner too. The larger one's markings didn't come until later.
It sure would be cool to end up with a great new variety, JaNan. I love stuff like this, so it's all ok with me.
I didn't know that about the seed being unstable from variegated plants. That's kind of cool though and I can't wait to see how the plant turns out...

Here's an update on my hot peppers.
The cayenne on the middle/right is really dominating everything else. The bhut jolokias on the right are probably the bushiest, but still much slower growing than cayenne. The bottom middle left "banana peppers" look like they have pretty good size potential. Devil's tongue on top middle left is probably the smallest. Trinidad scorpion on bottom left was planted a week later than the rest, but it looks similar to the bhut jolokias. Pequin on the top left is a relatively small species, but it's the darkest.
This is going to be more pepper plants than I'll ever need, but they can always be frozen in the freezer or given to other people so I can't ever have too much of it. It seems like they have grown much more lush and full ever since I started adding aerated worm tea to them.

Just wondering. Is it better to take these and up-pot them to stay outside by now when the avg temperature should be around 40-60F or should I keep them indoors under the 70watt cfl?
As you can see, my hot peppers are gaining size pretty quickly however the bigger ones look like they are running out of space fairly quickly, and starting to crowd each other out. I know they aren't frost tolerant, but I'm thinking about bringing them outside, and perhaps putting some sort of cover over them in case of frost.

Don't put them out until the night time lows stay above 50 F. Also, initially only allow morning sun until they develop enough vigor for full-day sunlight.

Hot and sweet pepper plants can handle full-sun right from the start. Surprisingly, even some sweet varieties, like Gypsy, are very cold-tolerant and don't mind lower temps at all. All you really have to worry about Steve, is frost.

Educate Yourself About Hot Peppers!!!
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/hotchilies.jpg (not my shot. ;))
Very interesting & factual information from my wonderful Food Remedies book...
CHILI PEPPERS....RED HOT HEALERS!!!
According to an old saying "Whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger"..this might be the perfect motto for the chili pepper. Not only can many people withstand the heat, they actually enjoy it. Chili pepper fans savor the heat at every opportunity, not just in traditional favorites like tacos and burritos but also in foods such as omelets, stews, and even salads.
More is involved than just a little culinary spice. These thermogenic morsels are prized around the globe for their healing power as well as their firepower. Hot chilies have long been used as natural remedies for coughs, colds, sinusitis, and bronchitis. There's some evidence that they can help lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, the type associate with stroke, high blood pressure, and heart disease.
There's also some evidence that chilies can help prevent...of all things...stomach ulcers!
HEAT UP A COLD...
Chili-lovers have long asserted that hot peppers, from Serranos to Jalapenos, are the ultimate decongestant, clearing a stuffy nose in the time it takes to gasp "YOW"!!! :ha:
In fact, the fiery bite of hot chilies (or chili-based condiments like Tobasco sauce) can work well as over-the-counter remedies. Some of the foods used to fight respiratory diseases for centuries, including hot peppers, are very similar to the drugs we now use.
The stuff that makes hot peppers so nose-clearing good, is capsaicin, a plant chemical that gives peppers their sting. Chemically, capsaicin is similar to a drug called guaifenesin, which is used in many over-the-counter and prescription cold remedies such as Robitussin.
0f course, eating a chili pepper has more of an immediate impact than taking a spoonful of medicine. When hot pepper meets tongue, the brain is slammed with an onslaught of nerve messages. The brain responds to this "OW" message by stimulating secretion-producing glands that line the airways. The result is a flood of fluids that makes your eyes water, your nose run, and the mucus in your lungs loosen. In other words, chili peppers are a natural decongestant and expectorant.
It doesn't take a lot of pepper to get the healing benefits either. Adding 10 drops of hot-pepper sauce to a bowl of chicken soup can be very effective. People with colds should eat lots of hot peppers because they can be quite effective, particularily if you want to clear your sinuses.
Help For Heart & Stomach...
Besides unblocking clogged airways, chilies may also cut blood cholesterol. When laboratory animals were fed a diet high in capsaicin and low in saturated fat, it helped reduce their 'bad' LDL cholesterol.
Eating chili peppers also appears to have a blood-thinning effect. Researchers found that chilies can hinder the formulation of blood clots by increasing the amount of time it takes for blood to coagulate. This could play a role in helping blood clots that lead to heart attack and stroke.
For years, doctors advised people prone to ulcers to abstain from spicy foods. Reasearch now suggests the opposite: that chili peppers may help prevent ulcers from occurring...
Capsaicin appears to shield the stomach lining from ulcer-causing acids and alcohol by stimulating the flow of juices. Researchers found that people who consumed the most chili powder had fewer ulcers, leading them to speculate that chili or capsaicin was the protective factor.
Red-Hot Vitamins...
Getting more hot chilies into your diet may strengthen your personal anti-aging arsenal. That's because they're a rich source of the antioxidant vitamin C and beta-carotene (which is converted into vitamin A in the body).
These antioxidants help protect the body by "neutralizing" free radicals, harmful oxygen molecules that naturally accumulate in the body and cause cell damage. Upping your intake of antioxidant vitamins, researchers believe, may prevent damage that can lead to cancer, heart disease, and stroke, as well as such things as arthritis and a weakened immune system.
* One red chili packs 3 milligrams of beta-carotene, between 30 and 50 percent of the amount recommended by most experts. Studies show that people who consume more beta-carotene-rich foods get less cancer and heart disease.
GETTING THE MOST FROM HOT PEPPERS:
Enjoy them raw. Although raw chilies can be uncomfortably hot for some people, that's the best way to get the most vitamin C; cooking destroys the stores of this vitamin. On the other hand, capsaicin isn't affected by heating, so if that's what you're after...to help relieve congestion. for example...cook the peppers to your taste.
Munch the membrane. Inside the chili is a thin membrane that connects the seeds to the flesh. Most of the capsaicin in chili peppers is located in the membrane.
Preserve powder: Storing chili powder at room temperature will eventually deplete it's beta-carotene. Keep chili powder in a dark, cool place, like in the freezer.
Eat for comfort. The hottest chili pepper isn't necessarily the most healing, so don't make yourself suffer. From wild to mild, here are a few chilies you may want to try...
* Habanero pepper and Scotch Bonnet are among the most mouth-blistering.
* Jalapeno and Fresno peppers weigh in at 50% firepower, compared to the Habanero.
* Hungarian Cherry and Anaheim peppers emit more of a glow than a flame and a good choice for tamer palates.

The last freeze date is supposed to be May 18th in our climate, but I don't see any frosts in the long term forecast, and I have wall o water ordered to protect my vegetables so I went ahead and planted most of my hot peppers. The rest, I'll probably just give away, but I think they will do better in the ground since they were very crowded in the seed tray, and didn't have enough root space.
Just an update on the bhut jolokia here. They do grow pretty fast with huge leaves.

JaNan...you're the best! :goteam:
Wanna know why?
First, realize that these are nighttime shots with a new camera and they may not be the clearest. I was too excited to wait until tomorrow...
Ok, remember those three plants in one pot that I thought were all 'marble', but then two turned out to have little pointy greenish fruits?
Well tonight, upon closer inspection, I came to realize that the one plant actually has little fruits that have turned a white color, blushed with purple!!!
I think you know that I've recently developed kind of a thing for white peppers, so these are especially cool...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/100_0158.jpg
Aren't they so cute? At first they were like a really pale yellow, but have since turned nearly white!
The other plant in the same pot, is producing peppers that are totally different from the other two plants...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/100_0159.jpg
In this last shot, you can see the differences with them both together...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/100_0154.jpg
Are you as freaked out as I am, JaNan. Where the heck did you get white peppers from?
Whatever they are...I love 'em! :08: I intend on collecting seeds. It's neat watching them grow. The bigger they grow, the whiter they're getting. :goteam:
You really have a cool variety there, JaNan. What will I call them?
They'll likely ripen red later, but we'll see...
: )
Jananas Bananas
05-10-2011, 09:33 PM
Well Sherry I am glad you are so tickled with them! :woohoonaner:
The only one that I know has white in one stage is the little Marbles, unless those red ones I bought had a white stage that I didn't see, because they were all red when I bought them.
Name them whatever you want! They are really pretty, whatever they are!!! :)
They look "white hot" to me!!! :ha:
The Hollyberry Lady
05-10-2011, 09:51 PM
That's exactly what I was thinking...that something got crossed with your marble plant. How cool is that though?! :08:
I'll wait until they develop and mature before I name them but I was contemplating..."JaNan's Snowdrops". :D
: )
Jananas Bananas
05-10-2011, 10:27 PM
Well, Snowdrops is a pretty name! :p Do you think the seeds would be similar to the parent plant? Or be split between the parents? It might take a couple of generations to know for sure I guess. That is really fascinating to think about though - how all that works. I know a little bit about animal genetics, but plants not so much. :)
The Hollyberry Lady
05-10-2011, 10:35 PM
From my experience of growing peppers, the seeds should be true to the parent only if they don't keep getting cross-pollinated...which they won't of course indoors. :D
You've never seen them before, so they were the result of last season's cross-pollination. You were collecting marble seeds that had been crossed with something else. I'll grow some of the seeds later to be sure they are true.
This is kinda cool and exciting. Here I thought they were all marbles and none of them are! :ha:
What do you make of that short, fat dark purple fruit, on that other variegated type? It's cool looking whatever it is. I love pepper surprises!
: )
Jananas Bananas
05-10-2011, 10:58 PM
See there you go asking ME again! Like I know what is going on!!!! :ha:

The Hollyberry Lady
05-11-2011, 12:56 PM

I would say that trying to get a purple brown color and the variegated leaves - JigSaw, Black Pearl, and the mini Jalapeņo cross, if that is even possible. I do have lots of bees, wasps, and butterflies. It could be some wild combo like that!!! :woohoonaner:
It really kind of makes me feel bad though. I think I have them labeled correctly, then they turn out to be some wild combination. :( I think you are saying you like them just to make me feel good!

Not a chance JaNan...I'm far too blunt and outspoken to keep quiet if I didn't like something. I'd take my chances and just be honest, but the truth is, I love them all! :goteam:
I already have a true marble and jigsaw plant in the A-G so it's nice to have some changes and surprises showing up in my pots. I love the variations. If you want to collect true seeds from your pepper plants, do what I do and grow some inside.
It's possible too, for sweet and hot varieties to cross! I had a sweet red bell pepper a couple years back that I collected seeds from, only when I grew the seeds, the fruits had heat the next time around! :ha: I knew they'd been crossed with one of my hot peppers.
Blake09's three little fruits are adorable today...

Well, that really makes me wonder. I bought the original marble pepper from a nursery that was going out of business. BUT......they were next to all sorts of different peppers and pollinating insects everywhere. Even closed up varieties had bees in the greenhouses. And when you are buying at the big box stores the pollinators are all over the plants too. I guess you never know if your seeds will be true right (unless grown indoors like you do)?
I bought these two for my Daughter In Law for Mother's Day:

Be sure to collect lots of seeds from the fruits of your Black Pearl...especially one grown inside, so they'll be true to the parent plant. That's why I'm producing mine indoors so I can harvest some good true seeds to share.
I love how black it is too, JaNan. It's incredible. They aren't as black though, if they're not in full sun. I've got mine in my south picture window...best and strongest light I have to offer in here. They are both black as night! :08:
Wouldn't it be cool if they developed a pepper plant that was the complete opposite of black pearl...pearl white?! It would be completely white, even the peppers! I hope they do
someday. :goteam:
In the meantime though, I'm going to grow a black pearl and a white habanero in the same pot together. I thought the stark black and white combination would be cool looking. :D
Great that you got some of my seeds to pop, JaNan. Will you grow that one in the A-G? I bet it will be super black.

I can see why that one is named Firecracker! Is it super hot?
I am posting this in "hot" pepper thread, but I don't really know if it is a hot one or not. I think I posted earlier that it is just labeled as a decorator pot or something to that effect.
http://i1140.photobucket.com/albums/n580/JaNan16/20110526059.jpg
Anyway, it sure is prolific at peppering! :ha: Sherry do you want me to save any seeds of this one for you since we really don't know what it is, or no? I know you have a ton of pepper seeds.

The Fish pepper plant is getting prettier by the day and now pure white leaves are growing. I love this variety and when the fruits ripen the plant has a real chrismassy look to it. Even the peppers are variegated! They have stripes until they turn completely red. They're also medium hot so you might enjoy eating them, JaNan. So cool you're growing one as well. So far, the aero-garden has worked very well on hot peppers and tomatoes, but all the other plants I've tried tended to do OK for a few days, then die off so I'm basically sticking to those plants until I find another plant that grows well in the AG.
Phyllostachys Kwangsiensis running bamboo seems to also do OK in there, but there's no real increase in growth rate for it using the AG as opposed to with soil. Basically the AG requires plants that can grow in a warm controlled environment to get desired results.

Steve, I grow a lot more than just peppers and tomatoes in my AeroGardens - several trees (Mimosa, Royal Empress), Datura, Bachelor Buttons, Goji, Eggplant, to name a few - I started all of them from seed - and they are all doing well (picture updates are in the AeroGarden thread).

Yes and what's more amazing is that all three plants are together in one single 6 inch pot!!!
I've learned over the years that rootbound pepper plants produce the best crops and highest yields. This is surely proof. In fact I couldn't even fit all the peppers into one picture...they're just everywhere.
I'd have to say it's my favorite pot of peppers this season. They just look so cool all in one pot like that with three different kinds of fruits! Do you want seeds for any of them? Let me know...
Too funny how people on that aero-garden site go on and on about how indoor peppers and tomatoes require hand-pollination! Not one of my plants were hand-pollinated and just look at all the fruits I've got!
I've set them all straight now though and some have been in total amazement. Do you believe they've all be running around with paintbrushes, trying to pollinate thier pepper plants! :ha: See how one idiot can tell people something like it's a fact and have the whole site believe it! Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups! :nanadrink:

Yes, I like the chocolately look of those too but in different lighting they are quite purple...like when sun shines on them.

I really think it's that intense aero-garden light that's making the leaves so dark on all my pepper plants in there...because the ones in the windows aren't nearly as dark...accept for 'black pearl'.
I don't think Marble is suited for the A-G though, if you wanna see lots of fruits. Mine missed it's crop entirely and only put on a couple, although the foliage is stunning.
The 'little blue' plant right beside it put on a whole whack of fruits though. Some pepper varieties are fussier than others. I don't want to take it out just yet though because I'm afraid of losing it. I love it too much to let it go or remove it yet.

If you cut the tall one back, it would fill out more and if they had better light they'd already have peppers on them by now...but a very excellent first attempt you've made, if I do say so. ;) Do you know which type they are?
Why don't you put them outside? That tall one will require staking at that height but if you choose to cut it back, it'll become more stocky and dense. Putting them outside and giving them at least 6 hours of sun a day is a must if you want to see more than just leaves. :)
Nice job though. They're very healthy looking and you're getting some pepper-growing experience. :08:

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/100_1613.jpg
It's black, like 'black pearl' but it's a dwarf and it gets purple fruits that turn red later. At first the peppers are black but then they turn bright purple. I have 4 more plants just like it, also in pots.
It would be the perfect variety for the aero-garden, and I have one in there now!
It's not black yet, but once I change the bulbs, it will be. It's just now setting buds though so it will have a crop soon. Looking so forward. I'm going to be saving lots of seeds for sharing because it's one very cool and much sought after variety. :D

The Hollyberry Lady
07-06-2011, 09:12 AM
Yes, it's very similar to 'black pearl' Cam...that's why I love it. But it gets purple pointed fruits instead of black round ones. It grows about 6 inches tall.
This next pepper variety is one of my most favorites called 'Aurora' and I have 8 of plants in one pot. It's another dwarf type and the leaves get purplish over the season. Here are my very first fruits today...

They'll ripen through 6 different colors and shades in between too. :goteam:
I'm also growing this type in my 2nd A-G system too. Waiting for germination...

Wow 6 different colors! How neat and it being a dwarf is a plus.

The colors are starting already, even though the plant is just beginning to set it's fruit. Notice in the 2nd shot, one of the peppers is bright purple and one is mauvey/violet? They even go through a white stage too! They're just the absolute best and I grow them every year. The fruits are super hot and surprisingly flavorful also. I'd have to say it's my all-time favorite type. You'll soon see why...

Ok so here are three more "Explosive Amber" plants in one pot, but they're just getting started...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/100_1632.jpg
They're beginning to set fruits and will grow more full over the season.
I'm ashamed to say these are my "Filius Blue" pepper plants in desperate need of fertilization, which they received today...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/100_1633.jpg
There are actually 4 plants in one pot but I got the seeds later in the season and so they got neglected a bit because I was busy tending to all my other pepper varieties with fruits on them!
Don't underestimate those 'filius blue' plants though...I'll have them looking great in no time. They're already setting buds and I can't wait to see the fruits because they're as close to actual blue as you can get (except for the ones my grandmother used to grow).
Will show soon...

As usual those are nice plants. I added some Epsom salts to my AG so I hope that helps my peppers out. I can't wait to see the peppers on the Filius Blue. So how big are the pots that you have them in?
The Hollyberry Lady
07-06-2011, 02:07 PM
I've shamefully got the Filius Blue plants in a 3 and a 1/2 inch pot because I'm dwarfing them! :ha:
I didn't realize I was getting the seeds until I had already sown my indoor pepper crops and I didn't have a lot of room left in my south windows, which is where I wanted them to grow.
Some pepper plants I just grew this year for seed though and once I collect them I'm giving the plants to my girlfriends. I will have more room in mid to late summer and I grow some of my best peppers in Autumn. Oh wait until you see what I will have. I'm even sowing more pepper seeds now to get ready for a late Autumn harvest! :goteam:
Ok these mystery fruits from Janan are super duper HOT

Not that I'd need the money (I could donate the proceeds to the little girl I sponsor in Africa) but if I grew many of my beautiful pepper varieties and set up a little table...they'd sell like crazy! I just know it. Especially these ones...

Yup, I've been sponsoring her for over three years now, Cam. ;) Through a reputable place though, where 100% of your money actually goes to the child!
Yes Janan, it's the same plant. :D Isn't it too cool?! It grows like an actual tree and the branches are horizontal!!! It totally reminds me of "purple tiger" in a huge way. I just absolutely love it and know people who would go nuts over it. :08:

Thank you very much! The top one almost looks like a teeny watermelon. They (the mystery peppers) have a rounded rectangle look to them don't they, or is it just how they photograph? Is there any other known peppers that have that shape?
Love those FISH! I keep checking mine every day for little buds. :ha:

Yes Janan, the mystery peppers are block shaped, and rectangular! That's why they remind me of 'purple tiger' as well, because of the shape. I really am enjoying them and have seeds collected already.

I'll get some better shots later because these are taken from the back of the plants but this is another mystery pot of hot peppers, from Portugal. A gardener sent me a mix of some of their best types and these purple ones are looking so intriguing...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/100_1683.jpg
It's a dwarf plant too and the leaves are kind of purplish. I definitely plan on saving seeds for this one. :D
Even the brownish/black peppers (a totally different variety in the same container) are really neat looking.
