I would call or e-mail her back and ask...Maybe she could also give a estimated time that they think they will be available
I got mine about 3 weeks ago or so. Katie has always got right back to me through email so if they aren't responding right away I'd guess they are out doing shows etc. I did send an email in the beginning of summer just to let them know of my coninued interest( not "where is it!" just a freindly "just to let you know I 'm still interested". This may have helped.

Hey y'all,
Could you fill me in on what this thread is about? I figure it is safe to assume viente cohol is a banana (but not on the wiki page), and someone named Katie has a list of those who want one.....

Hi Russell. There is a Banana by the name of Veinte Cohol as you assumed. It is a wonderful Banana that alot of people are trying to get a hold of. "Goingbananas.com" has them but they are on a waiting list. Use the search button and type in Veinte Cohol to learn more about them.
here is the orginal thread...I hope this works..

For all you that are just now getting yours, please keep us updated to how it does for you. I was TRULY disappointed in!!! It grew well for me last summer and I stored the main pstem which was about 5' in my garage overwinter. It looked great all winter and the pstem stayed nice and firm. Well, when I brought it out this spring, the thing collapsed on me and rotted out completely from the corm upward. I had separated a few pups from the mama last summer that were about 2' tall each and stored them in my friends greenhouse. Same thing happened to the pups with the exception of one that died to the corm and then started sending up a new pup only to have it die back when it was only about 3" tall.
I truly hope some of you have better luck than I did because, I too, was hoping for a short season banana for us further north.
I think Austin in LR Ark, had a similiar experience with his and hope he will see this and update us on what his did or didn't do... Best of luck to all of you with growing it and please keep us updated!!!!

My first Viente Cohol is not doing great either but still alive. I've transferred it a few times but it never did grew tall. So I've had it for a year now
and 2 months ago I transferred it to ground with protection and I planted it close to a lot of other bananas and other plants near it. It appears to be doing OK except that it is too soon to tell. It is now about 1 1/2 feet tall and 1" dia pstem. I ordered another one about 5 months ago for a friend but still I am waiting.

Hey, my friend. I had basically the same experience as Randy. I dug and stored my potted V.C. in the garage for the winter. I watered only a few times to keep the plant hydrated. Like Randy, my plant's pstem was so firm and nice all winter into the spring...until warm weather arrived. It then started to rot so I cut down the stem in half but the rotting continued down to the corm. There was no way to save it. :( I tried my best. Good luck with all of yours. I just wish this banana was the holy grail for northern gardeners, but with our experiences, it isn't. I've gone back to dwarf Orinoco since it stores so well and I have a decent chance of getting ripe fruit. I will remain V.C.-less!

Well, that's 2 strikes against it - or at least against trying to grow it in a pot and storing it. I bet it was expensive too.
Anyone have better luck in a banana friendly climate zone?

Russell, I grew mine out in the garden last summer until the end of August, dug it up and then potted it with a few pups in a 60 gallon nursery pot. Here it is at the end of July last summer:

Randy, I assume this is the one you lost - but I just can't believe it. Have you tried drenching with a fungicide like Subdue? Hasn't anyone grown this one outside and overwintered it?

Good morning Stumpy4700,
I overwintered mine by having it planted in a raised bed. It was not covered when 2 months of low 30s to low 40s as daytime lows and daytimes highs of 50s. The area is supposed to be zone 10. This year however was unusually cold and was like zone 9 weather. During this 2 month period temperatures hit29F several times. :2239:

Well as long as the list was and as slow as it was going #49 last september. I would much prefer to have a TC than wait another year or two for the list to be exhausted to my number (#128). They saw a problem and saught out the best solution most likely. :^)
Clare_CA
04-28-2010, 02:05 PM
I haven't received mine yet -- maybe because I'm on the west coast and it takes longer.
I got a few tissue-cultured bananas last year, and they didn't do well when I planted them in full sun in the summertime. I didn't know that I was supposed to acclimate them first. They were tiny, thin little things. I think, out of five, only two made it. They were tissue cultured bananas from Greenearth. With bananas that have been greenhoused, some slow acclimation is necessary, I think.

At least these are fairly big plants. I think after the shock of transplanting and exposure to sunlight they will do fine. I'm not risking overwintering outside the first year though. Mine is coming in for the holidays...lol

I actually received mine later in the day on the day that I posted that I hadn't received it yet. I potted it up and put it outside in part shade. It looked a little bit wilted -- probably because it was only used to greenhouse conditions, but I think it will recover. I plan to plant it in full sun, but I'm hoping to get it acclimated first, and I want to wait until it has a bigger root system before I plant it.

I should clarify that it looked fine when it arrived and only looked wilted after a couple of days. It might have just gotten a little dry. I'm sure it will perk up. We don't have much humidity here, which would probably help some. I'm still really excited about it.

Yes I am.. It has a sand bucket of pot-ash mixed in to the soil w/ Mycorrhizal Fungi. It gets the fish treatment every 3 weeks as well. :^)
I am a bit ignorant to banana care. Could you elaborate on what you are using, the costs and where I might find it. I am especially interested in the "why" these treatments are needed and what they do for the banana. Thanks

[QUOTE=srash;132273]I planted mine in the ground a couple of months ago as soon as they arrived. I was 110 on the wait list.
Not sure what your doing but mine is growing new leafs but the plant is still small. We have been having a strange year this year tho the crape mrytle trees are not even blooming usally there full of blooms by this time of year.

I appreciate the confidence.. I keep looking everyday hoping and not hoping.. A pup would be nice, but rather it waits till the end of august so I can get the most out of this season. :^) I have a dwarf namwah (spring TC) that has two pups in the same row that is taller than any banana in the row. :^) A manzano (spring TC back Row) is a foot (p-stem) or 2 ft taller in the leaves easy. :^)

I'd call them then you can get a quote over the phone and mail it out. A good way to find out w/o waiting. :^)

Impressive. Mine is still the size that it was when I got it. I've had to move it twice, but it is ridiculously small. Maybe I got a runt. Oh, well. Yours looks great.

Sad to say the my Viente did not survive the overwintering in the garage. It was all brown when I brought it out. I planted it anyways hoping that it might send up a pup in the next couple of weeks.....:(

Mine never got any bigger than when I got it, and it died over the winter. All the other bananas around it are doing great so I don't think it is the conditions here. I personally won't plant tissue-cultured bananas again. They just don't seem to thrive when I put them in the ground, and I'm not willing to baby them in a greenhouse before planting them. I have lots of fruiting bananas now anyway. I bought into the hype of a fast-fruiting banana, but I really didn't need it.
