View Full Version : Variegated Texas Palmetto?

I noticed Sunday that my Texas Palmetto that I talked about a few weeks ago had a new frond opening up, but something was different. Upon closer inspection I noticed part of the frond was lighter with the regular green. It seems that it has pushed out a variegated frond and it looks like the one coming up next has the look of variegation as well. What do you think, is it variegated?

Has it been variegeted since its first leaves, or did variegation appear only some time ago?

Jake,
I don't think that's anything more than a new, tender leaf. As it opens and "hardens" it will sarken and look like all of the rest. That pale green would turn to white if you were to rip it open down into the bud. The farther down it is the lighter it is.

It just started with this leaf. In the past all new leaves haven't looked Like this as they were opening.

I'll be eager to hear what it looks like in another month.

My W. robusta did that this past week actually, it was just a shady week with lots of rain and the frond opened and didn't harden off as quickly as usual. I was worried as I applied fertilizer a few weeks ago but everything is OK now.
By the way, Jake, I like your blog a lot. I check it out quite frequently. Good to see you here on the site. :)

It looks like the result of quick new growth. My Sabal minor actually looks like that right now.

Thanks everyone for all of the responses. As of right now it still looks the same and hasn't darkened any. I will try and post a picture around this time in September to show what it has done.
Taylor, thanks for the compliment on my blog. It is nice to know that people actually read it, lol. I am always updating it too.
