What are you going to do with it over the winter? If you're gonna dig it up and bring it inside, leave the leaves. Otherwise, I wouldn't cut them until the very last moment and you're ready to impliment protection.
Cheers,
Mike

Yeha I am not planning on cutting any of my leaves this winter. I am going to use Gabe's method. Keep them alive and growing over the winter. I am going to do this with my Saba, Rajapuri, All Little Princes, zebrina( which doesn't store worth a damn), the beccarii, rubinea and all of my seedlings. I will dig up the ones in the ground when the nights start getting into the 40s.

You can't be much colder than Gabe. I know he hits -35 F regularly and its been cold enough to break the bottom out of a Mercury thermometer before. And I know you live in Newfoundland.

SDC should stay small enough to fit indoors if you dig it up and pot it. From what I hear it really hates cold weather so leaving it in the ground is probably not a good idea.
Hi,
I'm new to the banana growers world.
Where can I find Gabe's method to overwinter bananas? So far, I've found Frank "BigDog"'s explanation.
Kind regards

Gabe's method is to keep them alive and growing over the winter. It really isn't a method he came up with. I was just joking around when I said that. He has to grow them like that because he has such a short growing season up there in Colorado.

Musa_Cavandish,
Where in NFLD are you located? Why not map yourself to show everyone where you live. Perhaps, it may help illustrate how cold :coldbanana: it can get on the Rock. I think the biggest issue you have is the very short cool summers you have there. Based on St John's average temperatures, the two warmest months of July and August never average over 21.C/ 70.0F.

How do you keep a "bunch" of bananas going all winter? Does Gabe use a greenhouse? They are fairly large to keep in the house unless you have anempty room to keep them in. Don't they get weak and start getting mites? I have carried palms indoors, but never bananas, so I am curious. I have a two foot zebrina that I don't know what to do with. Might be too small for dormancy

Don't know exactly what Gabe uses but I try to keep mine growing too, both indoors and in a small (but rather tall) greenhouse. Most of them get too big for indoors growing when they get to full size but this particular thread started with a question about SDC which is rather modest as far as space requirements are concerned. You are right about mites, they are a big PITA. I have an indoor setup with grow lights, a fan, and plastic & aluminium foil shielding off the area where the bananas are located. Keeping the humidity higher than in normal indoor air and moving the air around is said to slow down the mites. Last winter I still lost an ensete glaucum to the mites but all the others made it to spring ok.
