Well I have been watching this pup for weeks now and seems like it wants to be variegated. It looks nothing like the mother plant or the other pups. The p-stem is even different then the others. It has stripes of pink running vertically. Now the latest leaf to unfurl has splotches of pinkish red on it. So my thought is to isolate this one pup and see what it's pups look like. If they too come up with variegation then it must be a new genetic mutation.

Check it out folks!

Gorgeous! Put me on your list when you have a surplus of pups! :)

Be well,

Oh wow. I want to be on that list too. Did you have this when Gabe was at your house? He might be interested in using that for his new breeding project. I am sure he'll share in a while, but i know he's been really busy.

I had it but it was very small and not really looking strange yet, at least I hadn't noticed. I don't think either of the two pups Gabe took with him had this going on.

So what's you're take Gabe? Do all Bananas have the same odds of a genetic mutation?

What I would love to see is the Indian Corn Effect. This is random varigation that changes w/ each generation, and it exists in animals as well as plants- white, red and black areas all show up randomly is corncobs and Siamese Fighting Fish w/ this 'coding'.
Here's hoping your sport throws varigated pups!

Fantastic! You should definitely grow that one up and propagate it. Hopefully the pups will be variegated also. Keep an eye on it to see if the variegation is stable also. How tall is the whole plant?

It's about 5 feet tall at the top of the leaves now. I noticed in looking at it today that some of the variegation is caused by the wine colored splotches on the underside of the leaves showing through the tops. Time will tell!

So those following the Pisang Klotek contest now know that the pup that was to be given away was the pup from this plant that had been cut down due to concerns of it being sick or just taking energy from the mat. Well now that pup is showing the same weird color and deformed leaves. I am going to separate it and grow it out to see what happens but I don't think what's happening to it is a good thing. Maybe down the road the leaf shape will correct itself while maintaining the odd variegated color, but I doubt it. For the contest I will be shipping a normal healthy pup from a different mother plant.

Update: None of the pups or adult plants have shown any signs since that last pup I tried to grow in a pot. I did have another from the same corm that showed no signs but had to removed due to it's location. At this point none of the original BSV corm or pups still exist.
