I would like to know what are the best varieties which I can grow ( SF Bay Area, California) in ground and/or in container ? I am interested only in edible banana and especially the one you can eat raw as fruits /desert.
Any suggestions ?
Thanks.

Since you are in SF get ones that are hardy like dwarf Brazilian, raja puri and dwarf orinoco.

I am in zone 9 and Double is so finicky in my area. They would grow a little then the spears would dry out. Then after sometime it would try to grow again but again the cycle repeat itself. I have a hard time growing it. So in the future I'll stay away from it although I like the idea having two clumps of fruit at once. You can try.
I tried at least 23 plants . I am sticking with the ones that are hardy in my area.

Valerie, belle and Williams did not do too good in my area.
I am still debating on sweetheart. It gives off so many pups I don't know what to do with them. Pretty small though most of them are water suckers.

I inspected my bananas yesterday and one of the bananas that is growing real nice is a Double planted on the ground. So I am taking my word back that it is not recommended growing in zone 9. I have about 5 more varieties that is not listed in Joe's list but I did not jot it down.

The grow of banana depends upon the kind of soil and setup you have. I recommend to go with a test of the soil first and than go for the grow and find the most suitable one.
