Proletariatcsp's 100% Free Ice Cream 'Blue Java' Contest for Aug-Sept 2009 HAS OFFICIALLY ENDED.

Winner will be announced Aug.26 pending total count! Look for the winning guess to be highlighted in the running count below. Thank you all for participating in my contest! ~ChrisP.

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=20990&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=20990)http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=20991&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=20991)

Today starts my first "Finger Count" Contest. One winner will receive his or her choice of a 1-2ft Ice Cream 'Blue Java' pup with leaves intact or, a 3-4ft corm!

To make things fair and alittle interesting, I have included a few rules that may differ from previous contests. (Please read them before posting).

1. Now I know many of you already have your own Ice Cream banana plants. As you can see from the pictures above these are a taller, medium size banana at 14-15ft of pstem in only its second growing season. Still, if you'd like to give your prize to someone else, I will gladly mail it to their address as long as it is in the US.

2. We are well into the '09 hurricane season here in Florida. And there is a good chance that severe weather could end the fun. So, let's keep our "fingers" crossed and hope we see a good show of hands!

3. I will give away an Ice Cream pup, either 1-2ft w/leaves, or a 3-4ft corm. It's your choice at no cost to you, and I will pay for all S/H within the US.

4. The contest is open to all members, however, unfortunately due to US regulations of plants I cannot ship outside the US . If any Bananas.org International members participate, you may give your prize to another member if you win.

5. Guess the total finger count.

6. Contest will run until all hands have emerged, at which point, I will announce a winner on this thread, and also notify the winner via IM.

Good Luck Everyone! and please feel free to leave your questions and comments with your posts.

Ok, obvisouly the early count rule is confusing. After looking over the previous contests I believe a simple count of "total fingers" will suffice.

I appologize to Lagniappe and hammer. Your total counts still stand!

So let the plant rock'n'roll and let her hear some rock every day (letting plants listen to live conversations, music and other aspects of animal communication is proofed to give better results with the plant).

I believe there was an experiment done with tomato plants. Maybe someone else remembers it. There were six or eight greenhouses, of which, tomatoes were started under identical conditions and some greenhouses played different music and others did not.

The expirement showed that music somehow seemed to stimulate the plants' growth. It is interesting that the tomatoes listening to Classical and Heavy Metal music had grown the most!

I'll say 199, and run a sub-contest if I win (as I have done in the past). ~Lorax Could you describe that one a bit more? I will need to come up with something if there is a tie.

Question: Does the winning guess have to be the closest to or closest without going over the amount of fingers? ~Patty in Wisc Always starting trouble aren't you? LOL No, I understand your point. Because going over will probably cause a tie between two guesses. I'll have to come up with a tie-breaker of sorts. Maybe Lorax's is onto a good idea too. I think that perhaps I'll have to do a runner-up, winner pays s/h, or maybe I'll send a small plant for free. I haven't decided on anything for certain yet. I have 10 pups, and I'm only going to allow four or five to remain in the mat over winter. I'm also considering the possibility of holding an auction later on too. Well the inflorescence is well underway and opening up fast now. Unfortunately there are now two tropical storms, Ana and Bill heading up from the Atlantic. With much luck they won't become hurricanes. But we know these storms are so unpredictable. I'm going to attempt to cable the pstem tomorrow and hope the leaves hold out through this coming week cause it looks like its going to get ugly.

No, that's my "other home." I only wish I could get out there to Aclote Key more often, because it is the most beautiful beach we have found on all of the West Coast. At low tide there is about a sq. mile of ankle-deep water on the southern end. My g/f says that it looks just like the the beaches in the Carribean or the Keys. The island is a state park and is only accessible by boat from one of three public boat launch areas near Tarpon.

Well folks, I am sorry for the needless anticipation. I'm sure some of you have begun peeling your skin off waiting for an update. I began counting yesterday. After the last hands of flowers began turning brown and falling off, I thought for sure that meant all the viable fingers had finished emerging.

But when I resumed counting late this afternoon, low-and-behold there was another hand developing a few fingers. I'm not sure how many at this point, I wanted to wait until morning since the inflorescense seems to only grow at night.

Counting will resume today at first light, Aug. 27

Wow I still cant beleve I won! I must say THANKS!! Hmmm Ill chose the 3-4ft corm. I must ask would I put the courm in a big pot for the winter and then plant it in the spring after all danger of frost has pased. I beleve the Ice cream plant likes full sun? do you think I could grow a plant in a big pot? But ill put the one you gave to me in the ground. As you may see This will be my second banana plant and I have many questions, I cant wait til I get the courm. I ll include my address once you reply to this message. and again THANKS!!!

Blake

Hey Blake, the corm choice sounds like a good one. I will definitely send it to you with a couple of the lower leaves intact. I've heard some of the other members mention that leaving a few leaves intact helps the corm establish faster.

Please keep in mind that I will have to cut the corm down to fit in the box, but it shouldn't require to much trimming since its still under 4ft tall. Feel free to send me your address info at my email: proletariatcsp@yahoo.com

I will relay this message in the general bananas discussion forum and ask the other members help answer some of your questions about potting for winter. I personally think that is the best way. Well, I'm glad it finally arrived. I was hoping Mem.D wouldn't delay shipping, but it looks like it made it there without getting broken! I was stressed because its 50 inches.

If you haven't already potted it up, give it a good rinse with the hose. If you have already potted it, soak it down real good. I dont know if you can still see the old soil-line? Just above the roots, where the Pink meets the Green, that is how deep it should be. You know its deep enough if there is no white material showing above the dirt.

Looks like the leaf grew six inches in transit. Bananas are amazing plants. You can trim off the black part of the emerging leaf, it will look a lot better and the next leaf should be out in no time.

The sun is heading into the southern sky this time of year, I always have to move my plants to face the south to maximize sunlight hours. This is going to sound silly but, you should probably find a spot where the leaves have some shade and the pot is in direct sun. The idea is to keep the soil warm and promote faster growth of the roots. Either way, should handle part shade or full sun just fine. And it should also be good outside until the night temps get down to the low-fourties. Anything less than 40-45 you should probably make plans for indoors, at least at night time.

Keep us posted with your progress Blake!

I will, just potted it today :D

It was so big that I had no big pot to put it in, so I cut a 60gal drum in half drilled a bunch of holes.

Blake, the depth looks perfect. The advice the other members gave you about watering is good, you should keep the corm dry when its stored through winter. But right now, its still warm enough to grow and it needs water. Go easy for a couple weeks, just water when the top 2in of soil feels dry.

The drum idea looks great, and it should have no problem growing in there until spring. I know it gets cold in SC, how do your plants do in your green house?

To move it, a handtruck will work.

I can think of three ways to get it out of the pot in spring. Before you do, try to dig the hole about the size of the barrel.

1. You can cut the barrel, but if your like me and would rather save it for later you have two other options.

2. Let the barrel dry out pretty good, but not bone dry. Then, carefully lay the barrel on its side, dont worry bout the leaves. Get your neighbor or a friend to hold the barrel while you wiggle the base of the psuedostem with both hands. You should let the person with the barrel end pull while you remain still.

3. You can lay the barrel on its side. Lay down next to it and lay the psuedostem over your chest. With it on your chest, grasp with both hands and put your feet agaist each edge of the barrel. You should be able to carefully push the barrel off. And with the plant on its side, it should be easy to roll it into the new hole.

I know the pot is heavy, but when your ready to pull the banana you will be surprised to see a lot of the dirt remain in the pot. This why it is important to let the dirt dry out pretty good, because the dry dirt will help to hold the root ball together better. When you lay the pot on its side, the rootball may even come out without force. I have taken much bigger plants out of pots, and its scary at first because leaves tend to get broken but thats ok they will grow back.

I like this one, I can get HUNDREDS of these.

I'd love to change mine too.. The only problem is that I have no pictures to change too!! Lost house, garage, rehab buildings and ALL my plants not to mention the greenhouse and all my antiques, daughters dog burnt over 85% of her body , etc. etc. etc., all to a fire that the neighbor 4 acreages away let get out of control and walked away without calling for help.... And GOT AWAY WITH IT!! As soon as I can get something I think avatar worthy I'll replace mine too!

WOW! First off, I'm super glad you and your family are okay! That's the most important thing (other stuff is replaceable...but still unfortunate to lose). I'd sue that neighbor! That's totally reckless and negligent to let a fire get out of control and not call for help! They should have to pay for the damages done to your property! That's not right at ALL! Sorry for everything you lost, but once again...glad you guys are okay!

Taylor,
Yes Pete did send some pups and they are really nice... We were living in a small single wide trailer up to just recently and I was unable to pot them up so they have stayed kinda small since all the pots I had to put them in were from a few friends but, nobody had big enough pots and money is tight . I just started back to work and was able to find some affordable pots so up they went and hopefully some pics. will follow soon! Thanks again to Pete(Lagniappe) I couldn't have been so surprised and pleased with his total kindness!

LilRaverBoi,
Thank you so much for your kindness!! Yes, I too am glad none of us were in the house at the time.. We did loose a few rehab animals and a cat of ours had burnt feet and legs, but my daughters dog was the worst! She spent over 5 months in the Purdue University burn unit and had lots of skin graft surgeries etc. She is doing as well as can be expected and we are just happy she is alive! My daughter is very attached to her! Some things are Irreplaceable but there is nothing we can do. Got the garage built last weekend and started shingling today.. Hopefully we can finish shingles next weekend and then side.. I agree that they (the neighbor) should pay for the damages and in a perfect world they would have come forward and done just that but, we all know we don't live in that perfect world and they denied all of it even with evidence and we really dont have the funds to sue,let alone the energy!
Thanks again for your nice thoughts!
Sue

Almost 3 years later (from when I got it)......

The original Ice Cream 'Blue Java' had 1 pup in the late summer of 2010 and then died in the winter of 2011. Now that one pup that survived is going to be turning 2.5 years old here soon and guess what?

The 2.5 year old pup (not a pup anymore) is flowering!!!

http://i841.photobucket.com/albums/zz333/Plants_2010/My%20Plants/Banana%20plants%202012/051.jpg

Its bitter sweet though because I won’t get to see it fully mature and develop the bananas because of my climate. When it starts flowering male flowers should I just cut it off? Maybe even cut off 2/3 of the bananas to to help speed it up?

EDIT: Theres going to be more on this thread so that way I dont bring up an old contest thread:

Blake, you somebitch you did it! Congratulations. Now don't count yourself out do to the weather because down here in zone 10a I don't always get fruit thanks to late bloom time. I have 2 bunches now and one might be too late to harvest.

You have to put some christmas lights round that sucker and cover the whole thing with some clear plastic. I would build a square tube around the whole damn thing and tie the leaves up tight, with the christmas lights going it might have a chance.

PM your contact and I will send you some fruit in a couple weeks. I can't guarantee the quality but at least you will get to taste some. Thanks for the awesome update, I feel very good about sending you that plant after all these years. thank you thank you.
