How long have you had this plant? Are they in pots or in the ground? If in the ground, how long have they been where they're planted? If in pots, how big are the pots? Just curious because if they're first year plants, 5 feet sound pretty good considering the weird weather this year!

How much it can grow in a year is based on a strong, adult mat. It may take 1 or 2 years, or more, to build up a strong, woody corm and root system before it grows big.
There is a saying among bamboo growers:
First it sleeps
Then it creeps
Then it leaps
Basjoo seems to sleep longer than other bananas. Mine is now about a year in the ground from a 3" TC, and has reached 18-24 inches.

As KJ said, sometimes different plants need alittle more time to establish themselves, I'm sure next year at this time you will be amazed at how much it will grow. :bananas_b
Give it a year. Last year I planted some basjoos that were about 12", and they only grew to about 36" by the end of summer...pretty disappointing. This year they are already like 7 and 8 feet tall and growing like crazy.

I noticed, that basjoos don't like 85+°F temps very much. Might that be a reason?
