I have a few groups of basjoos in my yard. The pups begin to turn brown/black when the break the surface of the ground and then die. I've sprayed for mites numerous times. I did noticed mites in last spring. Could it be over fertilizing? Mites? I've never had this happen in the 5 yeas that I've had them in the ground. Any help would be appreciated. The big "parent" plants seem stunted and not putting out new leaves.
I fertilized once every 1-2 weeks. i've been using a bag of miracle grow in a hose end sprayer.

I don't really know what happens to your basjoo, so I won't be of any help here, but the pups are likely to turn brown/black, when their tissue is damaged, don't you have some building material, sharp stones or anything like that in garden, what could get to your basjoo and make this havoc?

I took some pictures. They are in my gallery. I had spider mites earlier in the year like I said. Does it take a long time to recover from them? I sprayed them down last night with some miticide. I've never had this happen in all the years they've been in the ground. It's either fertilizer or mites.

Do they stop growing after they are damaged, or continue as if nothing happened? What is that mulch made of?

They stop grown and turn the black color and die off. I've had a couple get around 7 inches with 3 leaves. The center leaf in "spike form" turns black and falls off. I've never had this happen. I'm suspecting fertilizer or mites........but I keep spraying for mites. I have other in the yard doing fine. It's just 4 groups of them not doing well.
