Hey to all of you out there in Banana land,

As a person who grows Carnivorous plants, a.k.a cp's, I was wondering if any one else grows them? I've seen a few people through search who do but was wondering if any of ya are currently growing them. I tend to grow more sarracenias than anything but do have flytraps and a few sundews.

thanks,

alex

If you do a search of this website you'll find that we have had several discussions about CP's. Personally I only have one, a Puya that eats sheep and other small animals.

Just search the word: Carnivorous

Alex... have been researching the sarracenias...they are wild!!!
Have been reading how to pollenate them this morning.
The variances in color & size are Awesome!!!

Look forward to learning more about these plants! :) ~Cheryl

No Cheryl, I have had this plant for several years now. Mine is Puya Berteroniana and will grow the turquoise flowers. The Puya Chilinis that Scot had grows yellow/green flowers. At some point I may sell mine cause I can't safely plant it anywhere around the house, but so far I have been hanging on to it just in case we pack up and retire someday to a place I can grow it. Who knows! The Puya Berteroniana is very hard to find and I paid quite a lot for this one. I think it was around $100 for a plant that was 4 or 5 inches tall at the time. There is a similar looking but more common plant that shows up for sale called Puya Alpestris. It has smaller more bluish flowers.

Flytraps. Can't resist them at Home Depot when they put them by the register.

On at least 3 occasions during my adulthood I have attempted to grow one form of CP or another, and they did not fare well. :(

Someone here posted pictures and construction of a very nice, large bog garden with many CPs a few months ago which gave me some ideas on what was going wrong. When the weather cools and I get to work on my little stream through my oasis I may incorporate that poster's ideas and stick some CPs back there.

Hey guerich,

Sarracenia purpurea is hardy where you live. It is native as far north as canada. It is a fairly common species.

Adrift,

For whatever reason you did not prosper at growing them there is an answer. The cultivatoin of carnivorous plants is a worth while and relatively inexpensive endeavour. If you would like to ask any questions post here or PM me. I'd love nothing more than to see more people grow them.

Awesome!
I really want to start a collection since I really like the way the flower looks but I am just keeping it down to one plant until I can figure out how to grow them successfully. I don't seem to be having any luck though. I have a Sarracenia and the pitcher parts are all brown and crispy but good thing is I see new pictures coming up. Can they be grown in sphagnum moss?

The best way to grow Sarracenia's is in a mix of half baled sphagnum peat moss and perlite. Carnivorous plants need nutrient free soil and baled sphagnum peat is not treated like other bagged soils. They grow best using the tray method where they are sitting in a tray of water which is kept filled with water, or build your a own mini-bog. also an important note is water should be very low in minerals or free of them such as rain or distilled water. Long fibered sphagnum moss is used as a top dressing or not at all. I know a few people who use it as a add in to their mix, but only if you understand how they grow and their water requirements. Look at the pics of my plants to see the containers used to grow and how they are grown. Finally, allow your plants to go dormant by leaving them outside all winter. Most CP's need a winter rest to continue to grow.

/if you have any more questions please post or pm me,

Hi Dar!

This is a video series that Alex refered me to watch.
Easy for me, as a beginning carni plant caretaker.
YouTube - How to Grow Sarracenia : Tips for Weeding & Pruning Pitcher Plants (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcNl0qbXdRo)

Sphagnum moss is part of the soil mix for PP's.

Have fun with it! We have a 'Scarlet Belle', what a beautiful plant!
It has a small 'friend' at it's base...a little sundew!

I gotta make clear that there is a difference between sphanum peat moss and long fibered blonde sphagnum. Both are used in the CP world but sphagnum peat is what is best used for Flytraps, Sarracenias, Sundews, and Butterworts. Darlingtonia and nepenthes use more long fibered sphagnum.

Cool that makes another one here with Scarlet Belle. Reason I asked abotu spagnum moss is because this is I what I have left over from a failed venture into orchids lol. And well, I didnt want to spend more money on potting mixes if I didnt have to. Thanks for the info Cheryl and Alex. ^^

Mine definitely needs a repotting cos a lot of the soil fell out when I received it. But will have to hold off until I get some peat moss. ANother question, is it best not to use a terra cotta pot? I notice you Alex are just using plastic pots. I am not concerned about terra cotta drying out, since I will have it stand in water, but I think the terra cotta affects the pH or something, doesnt it?

Don't use terra cotta for 2 reasons, one is that it drys out the peat on the outside a little even if it sitting in water and Sarracenia roots tend to grow along the edge. second and most important it allows salt and mineral build up. If you really want to use that long fibered sphag mix it with half perlite and it makes a great mix for sarracenias but peat seems to be a little better.

If you all don't mind, i'll add my two little guys here as well!
I have a mini-4 tier greenhouse(they sell them at lowes,hd) indoors that i use for sprouting, and also just in general for keeping some of my tropical plants. Well i have a stupid infestation of those pesky fungus gnats(atleast that's what i was told they were). They don't appear to cause any harm to any of my plants, they just fly in your face a lot. So i thought i would get some fly catching plants to keep in there. i mean it should be ideal conditions, warm, typically humid, sunny, and LOTS to eat. I keep them in some old upside down CD containers that i keep with about 1/4-1/2 of water. They nursery said to keep lots of extra water around for them.

I forget the names of these two, i just call them my octopus plant and my sticky plant :-) You can see the sticky plant is sending up a flower! the octopus already flowered and had a LONG central stem with lots of little purple flowers on it. They died back so i snipped off the stem.

I have a plant that may be a proto-carnivorous. It is a Euphrobia millii with flower stems so sticky that bugs and geckos get stuck on them. Whether or not the plant gets any nutrition out of them is anyone's guess.
