Hi everyone,
my parents took these babies from Indonesia:woohoonaner:. I'll have to wait till tomorrow to pick them up, so my dadd potted them for me. This afternoon he sent me some pics.

I'd expect the stem to be cut off, but I think these are very fresh pups...:) Should I just leave them like this? Will they grow or do I have to cut the brownish parts off?

Tnx, Marguerite

They're no good, send them to: Bob Morris Plains nj right away
Seriously it looks like the closed over portion at the top of the p-stem on the top plant might choke off new growth. I would let it get rooted in for a few weeks depending on how much roots it came with and then cut off the brown shriveled end. If it already is well rooted just do it now. This has worked for me every time so far.

Yep, he's right.
Both corms seem to be undamaged, more to that, only the top part of the pup seems to be damaged. I would give it a week and then cut the top off. Such a large corm should be making lots of roots any second, if not already trying to grow from the top.
I also see it's potted up in a dark soil. We'll see, but I believe it will grow very nicely much earlir than my naners. Good luck, Mrg.

This may slam me but if that pup is mine I will leave it alone.
Those brown tops protect the rest of the nanas from bacteria and stuff to get inside the stem . If you do cut the top off the rest of the pstem will get rotted or to depend itself the top portion of the stem will get browned again.
They are tough kind and sooner than you think, the spears will penetrate that brown tops and you will have a new leaf coming out.

Goodp point, but if the plant is potted and has such a large corm, it is not very likel to pup unless trying to put lots of energy into the new growth and in the end, it will be choking.

I second Benny's suggestion. Once the roots are sufficiently developed, the emerging leaf will split the brown dried portion that will become brittle, or soft, during the interim period.

Mar,
They are in excellent shape. They must have been hand carried or brought in with luggage to be in that great a shape. Also, your Dad did a good job potting them up. Although he potted the first one like tulip bulbs. It would be better if the pseudobulb on that first one were fully submerged in the soil. Enough to cover the just top of the p-bulb, anyway.

Congratulations! Do you know what type they are?

Thanks for sharing.

I also Agree with Chong's idea that the corm should be submerged more. I might add that since the corm is large it should have been planted into a bigger pot. The bigger pot the better if you want a lush and bigger plant right away. With that pot the roots underneath it will occupy the whole pot right away leaving no room to spread and thus will stale the growth prematurely.

Hi,
thanks all for your help SUPER! :waving:

Although he potted the first one like tulip bulbs

LOL, to me it looks more like a pink submarine ;)
I'll submerge it. Back home I'll put both bulbs in a larger pot in well draining soil and some perlite.

Dad took the corm in the first pic from a kampung somewhere on Java. It travelled with him for almost a week. To keep it healthy, he put it in a plactic KFC pot with some wet soil. This one is called pisang Ambon, which is probably Musa Gros Michel. (If not, I'd like to know:))

The corm in the first pic was taken from the hotel garden on Bali. This one is called pisang Raja (king banana) ans is probably Musa Belle. (If not, I'd like to know:))

Yeah, dad did a great job, he didn't send them by mail:0490:
Thanks again for your help and interest. Maybe I can add some more pics later on.

Marguerite

Holy..........(cow)!:woohoonaner: I don't think you realize what you've got. "Pisang Ambon" is THE holy grail in my opinion of the Gros Michel varieties. I had told Tog Tan about this one and he searched for months before he found one. Treat it like gold and go the extra mile by giving it the best soil mix and largest pot , most light/heat and fertilize appropriately.
On second thought , go back to my first post send to: Bob morris plains nj ......etc
Boy am I jealous..........please keep posting pics of it's progress, CONGRATULATIONS :goteam:

I thought pisang ambon was a hard to obtain (in the US) green-banana flavored liqueur made in Holland.

(I was introduced to this nectar aboard a Holland America cruise ship and have been unable to obtain my own supply.)

Perhaps it was named after "The Banana" at the time of its creation (ca. 1946).

You are exactly right. It is no longer available in the U.S.A. Bols still produces it and can be found with a simple internet search;). It probably was named after the current cultivar.

Liqueurs are one thing that's no problem to find anywhere in Europe :) (French/Central European wine, local beers, Russian and Finnish vodka, scotch, ... oh yeah, the roots are strong here :nanadrink: ). Thanks for the link.

My first thought as well was my dad was joking and would bring a corm and a bottle of liquor:D

I'm so happy he didn't, every liquor store in Holland sells it:) though in the morning I prefer Mazaa banana juice (http://www.enjoymaaza.com/nl/nl/products/). (I eat, I drink, I live bananas):woohoonaner:

Well, tonight he showed the pics. Verry nice, but he's not that into bananas. Here are the 3 closest pics he took (no idea what sport, but the pics look nice)

Thanks everyone! I'll keep you updated!

Oh, we have something better, 52%, called Borovička (junipers), Slivovica (plums)... and so many more others... (some crazy people drink also homemade 75%, 85% and then a few of them get blind or something else).
