This is Fraudulent Banana. The description will send most people who have grown bananas into uncontrollable fits of laughter:
Hi! I grow cold hardy banana tree's that make real bananas. These are cold musa banana tree's. They are cold hardy to -20 degrees. These pics are of the trees in my back yard. These plants are easy to grow and can be planted anywere. They do best planting in groups of 4 for pollination.

Curious, Ante was also writting "shure" instad of "sure". Wow. What a chance. :D
Btw. don't really hope to get anything good from that description, no banana is easy to grow in -20°C or °F.

I think Jack, that the bananas we see on the picture are Orinoco but I think its possible to get them in the US for less money in a good farm.
What do yo think?

I thought it might be so I emailed the seller, and she said "20 below freezing. So like 0 degrees would be fine. We have these temps here in Ga.":-)

That seller is factually incorrect. Seedless (edible) bananas do not need pollination. Further, -20 F is very different from 32 - 20 = 12 F -- which is still far too cold.
Then there are the issues of exorbitant price ($40) and "No Returns Accepted". Definitely a seller to avoid until they get their facts straight (including listing the name of the variety) and bring their prices down from the stratosphere.

Perhaps I went a wee bit overboard, but I sent an email to the seller:
What cultivar of bananas are you selling? I love cold hardy musas. However, there are many problems with your post that are either based on ignorance or fraud. As far as I know,( and every expert with whom I have spoken) there is no edible banana that is cold hardy to -20. Furthermore, no edible banana requires a pollinator.
IF your plants are cold hardy to -20 and have edible bananas, I can sell everyone of them for MUCH MORE than you are asking here. If they are not, then what you are asking is a very high price.
You are in Perry, Georgia, USDA zone 8..which never(or rarely) drops into single digits..let alone -20.. Upon what do you base your description?
If your description is accurate, then I can assure you that I can find sales for EVERY banana you can grow, if not...please do us all a favor and change the description.
and here is the response:
People like you is what is wrong with this world! If you were a happy individual, you wouldnt be sending e-mails like this to anyone. I grow plants for a living. Get a life! You have way to much time on your hands!!!
I think that this is the translation:
People like you (people with integrity) are what is wrong with this world!... ... ... I grow plants for a living. (and lie about them and sell them to unsuspecting people.) Get a life...(let me swindle people in peace)..
.................
words that are attributed to Edmund Burke come to mind:
"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."

Hi Browndrake.
Thanks to let us knowin more about that guy. Seems to be a special one.
He wants to say that in his world, we are wrong, and he is true.
I think that this guy is very smart seller (dont know if its the right term)
Confusing people with the cold tolerance, pushing them to buy four plants to get fruits, talking like he s growing plants in his backyard as a hobby ...selling four time the price...Great job.
Hope Musasgod will punish him for this.

Yep, you used the right term.
I hate people like that seller and that's why I want to educate in the field of (not only) bananas as much as possible, so that once I won't be a target for future fraud dealers.
When I come to think of it, he's just an ordinary *******. But it's always been only *******s, that were comfortable stealing from other people. A sane and normal man or woman wouldn't do that.
Well, maybe there's a small girl inside of him just banging on the door wanting to be released to this world and he silences her this way... :D

I think so, maybe he even went so far and that's some hardier variant of Orinoco, maybe Cali Cold Hardy. :D
Unless he is talking about Musa Basjoo (not edible) I think it is a fraud since clearly edible bananas do not need pollination. I don't know about Basjoo, but if it does need pollination, How do you get syncronized blooming?

You don't, it just has to bloom in the right time. But basjoo usually pushes about 2 pups of the same age and it was reported many times, that if equivalently old pup are attached to one corm, they flower at the same time...
But for basjoo I always read only 2, 2 plants are necessary for succesful pollination, not 4.
OK.

I looked at the seller's feedbacks and there were at least two buyers in June and July. They were sold at 4 for $40 before this one.

Well, everyone's responsible for his own luck. I just hope that the bad experience won't set them back on their banana journey.

Hi, I purchased a banana from Ebay specifically called California Gold from the guy who discovered it. He had links showing a local news story that was on him from around 1992. Here is a link about the information on this banana figs4fun home (http://webebananas.com/home.html)
If you select varieties you can read about this persons ideas on the California Gold. Here is a direct link. ENCANTO FARMS (http://webebananas.com/bvar-C-D.html). I am in Massachusetts. I have no expectations of this surviving our winters. I just thought the hardier the better. I am currently trying to built a lean to on the house to overwinter this banana in a pot.
In my opinion the ebay listing is too generic. He should know the exact variety he has and its origin.
Hope this helps

Hi, After reading the listing I have a question that for some reason I did not even think about. Will a single banana produce fruit? I see that the guy says that it best to have a group of banana plants for good pollination.
Doesn't the banana have a male and female flower part on one plant?
Thanks
Tom

Edible bananas are seedless and do not need pollination (eventhough they do have both male and female flowers, only one type is open at a time--I do not know how long the female flower is able to accept pollen). But, based on what Jack said, seeded varieties like Basjoo do need pollination, but they pup together and will bloom pretty close to the same time.
Wow if I was new to bananas and did not do any research this would have sounded amazing. This guy is a joke. browndrake I am glad you called him on this.

I posted a fraud report on eBay about this seller. Everyone here that has an eBay account should do the same until the listing is factual.

I am not sure when it was scheduled to end, but listing has ended. I don't know if it was due to reports or if time ran out.

Well Cesar, you go ahead and think that way if you want but it's obvious the dude is a prick and either doesn't know what he's talking about at all or is just...being a prick and lying.

It may have been automatically terminated after a few people submitted "fraud" reports. Regardless, I'm glad winsorw (http://www.bananas.org/member-winsorw.html) alerted us to the ad in the first place.

if this person is in perry Ga. they dont live far from me.there is normally freezing rain. the winters are usually cold and wet,but rarely snowy.
i have seen temps get as low as the mid teens in this area for about a week solid, sometimes more than once. the temps dont dip down much lower than that normally.
there are a lot of people here starting to grow bananas in their back yard. there are some people selling them in nurseries and they have no idea what species they are growing. when it comes to tropical plants,i may know more about them than any ten nursury owners in my area.
there isnt much of a selection when it comes to tropicals here. i try to request what plants i want from the vendors, some try to offer me "green leaf" bananas as a substitute for what i ordered.
i try to help people with what knowledge i have about plants. maybe the person is just being defensive because they felt like they were attacked?? a lot of the growers may be ignorant but not necessarily evil.. or maybe a little of both??:bananas_b

I think all credits should go to Richard, he did all the work necessary to stop the seller.
Now I saw a new one that's not as misleading as the previous one, the seller doesn't know if this is basjoo (which probably is). So he maybe innocent.
