Last week I stopped by Green Thumb Nursery and found these
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l192/YeloZ06/AeAe.jpg
They were potted in 5 gallon pots and marked $49.99 :woohoonaner:. My friend is standing next to the find of the century. The one I bought already had a pup! We didn't have room for anymore plants so we bought two. They had a third that I wished I could fit. I went back this morning with Harvey's name on the last one. Unfortunately they were out. (Sorry Harvey). I screwed up! I also purchased a Carica Papaya and a Musa High color mini.

I have three other AeAe's that are growing like weeds. The plants are almost as tall as the house. The largest has 4 pups. The new AeAe is planted in front of the house next to a Siam Ruby.

You stole those bananas. Lucky you. And you live where you can plant them in the ground and leave them. I am not that lucky. I have to try to keep mine alive for the winter inside.

ROFLMAO

I found one at Green Thumb on Friday stashed away amongst the Hydrangeas and just about soiled myself when I saw the sale price attached to some green and white leaves. I guess I got the third one you'd left behind :bananas_b

The crazy thing is that these used to be priced at $149.99. I'd asked one of the sales persons if they thought they'd ever go on sale since all the other bananas were $32.99, very cheap by comparison... They said something about talk to Carl yada yada yada.

Needless to say I bought it :)

A totally amazing find! When I came around the corner and saw them I thought wow AeAe in a local nursery. And when I saw the price I didn't want to tell them they were crazy. You got number three (good for you). The pup on mine is big. Even the 5 gallon bucket has professional looking label with a description of the plant. I went down in my Corvette today thinking know one would have purchased the last one and I would stuff it in the car. This was a once in a life time event.

I had never been to that nursery before. I will definitely stop by Every Time I drive down south. Maybe it was a mistake or as Pauly said, maybe that was the price they wanted??? Either way I now have one more.

Thanks for checking yesterday, Andrew, and congrats to you and to you as well, Andy. That would have been a back-up plant for me as I'm contemplating my smaller 4' Ae Ae in the ground but I may just keep that in a pot and move it into my greenhouse for the winter while my big monster deals with the winter outdoors.

I've heard that Ae Ae sold in Hawaii for as low as $10 before and from another source that they get snatched up for $50, but finding them that cheap in areas where they are scarce is a real find. Many nurseries are hurting badly due to the slow economy and I suspect they are discounting high-priced items so they don't need to move them up into larger pots and carry them in inventory even longer. Just my guess.

Cheers,

Harvey

I live 5 minutes from that nursery and stop by on my way home from work or run over on the weekend at least once a week. I'll let you know if they get any additional AE AE in. Like I said before, these plants had been marked as $149.99 for a couple of months which is why I was incredulous at the fire sale prices :)

They also typically have Goldfinger, Red Iholene, Dwarf Red Jamaican, Williams, Manzano, Ice Cream, Dwarf Cavendish, Rajapuri, etc. that range from 3-8 feet.

Cheers-

Andy

Thanks Andy! I really appreciate it. Have you planted your's yet? The one I got is in full sun and the pup is growing nicely. My other AeAe'a are in partial sun with wind protection from the house. I am experimenting with this one to see which do better. I hope my 5 pups continue growing strong before winter comes.

I haven't planted mine yet. I've been eyeing an area that gets some shade from an apple tree as I seem to remember that they burn in full sun... For now I repotted it in a larger pot until I figure out exactly where to put it and we're enjoying it on the back patio where it gets dappled sun in the morning and maye 2-3 hours of full sun in the afternoon.

Some times you just make it on the day that they are crazy! You never know what you will find. I should have bought the third but it would not have fit in the truck. At least a member purchased it.

I stopped by Greenthumb Nursery on my way home from work today to pick up some perlite and found these two beauties (one with a pup) amongst the ensete ventricosum... I couldn't believe that these had gone from 149.99 to 49.99 to 32.99. I got all squirley and was looking for a cart as quickly as I could. I kept thinking someone was gonna snatch 'em up before I got back. When I checked out the girl was like, "didn't you just buy one of those?" It was all I could do to not blurt out something about them being priced to thrill (or give me a coronary). I kept thinking the manager was going to run up to stop the sale and yell something about there being a huge mistake.

HAPPY FRIDAY!!!!!

Each one has around 4 feet of pseudostem I'd reckon. Very nice white coloration in the leaves too. Some of the leaves look to have been sunburned, but overall really nice looking.

I am so jealous, you guys. Congrats on your fantastic find. I just joined this forum after seeing this thread. I'm in Camarillo and just called Green Thumb to check to see if they had anymore, but the guy that answered didn't see any and told me to call Karl to see if they can order more.

I have to admit that I just paid $400 for 4 pups, and none of them are doing well. I have many plumerias and bananas in the ground, but I didn't put these in the ground because I have absolutely no shade at my place, and so I put them in pots. I was told that the leaves will burn badly in full sun.

In shady areas here, the soil just does not dry out fast enough, I think, and I've already lost one to rot. I am beside myself. I sold about 15 of my plumerias to pay for these bananas, and now I'll have nothing to show for them if they all die. Yesterday, I moved two of them to my hill area in full sun, and the other remains very slow growing in a pot.

This is how one of them looked when I first got it:

Here are the three that's left below. On one of them, I was cutting off the bottom portion of the corm that was rotting, and the stem broke off. I don't suppose there is anyway that the stem will root with rooting hormone. Is there any chance that, if the corm survives, it will sprout a new stem? Both are probably unlikely, but I thought I would ask the banana experts here. I hope I'm not posting this in the wrong place. Thanks.

Do you think there's a chance that these will survive?

This is what I would do , I am no expert but I have an AE AE that is doing fine. Get some better draining potting soil , the cactus mix . I don't think you can over water using it and repot your AE AE. And place in a shaded area.

Clare_CA
08-30-2009, 07:01 PM
Thanks, Tony. Yeah, I was thinking that too. I usually use SunGro's Sunshine Mix #4, which drains super good, but it has gotten so expensive so I used Supersoil and mixed it with coir and perlite. This is the same mix that I use for my Adeniums, which absolutely has to drain well, and it does in full sun. In cooler shade, it takes a little longer. I just went to see if I could pull the potted one up to repot, and I felt some roots snap so I left it where it is. The other two are in the ground now, which has super sandy soil.

I just planted my 3 AE AE today and boy was the soil wet on the last two I got from Green Thumb. I think they mistook the burnt leaves (they'd been in full sun most of their time there) for under watering. I'll post some pics soon.

It was quite a job, I removed the top 2 feet of clay from basically a triangle of lawn that's maybe 8'x8' on the two legs of the triangle and then dug further down and mixed in ~25-30 cubic feet of compost, ~8 bags of sand, and a couple bags of steer manure (my wife was thrilled that she could smell manure coming into our bedroom on such a hot day) :ha:
