Here I am on a simple enough Monday, trying to clean/organize the backyard. (Found my tuit) :D

When I move the mini pineapple plant off the patio table to clean it & my mind goes...HMM...

The thread where Nanaman had a few little pineapple pups & how he potted them up, pops into my mind...AND I'M OFF!!!

I pull up all kinds of stuff on the soil & repotting for Ananas Comosus & am also thinking...
They sell these pineapples in these funky, hot-glued pots to die & here I am like some kind of (bananas :D) whacko...
Trying to figure out how to save it & make some baby pineapples to give to my friends or for the FRG for newcomers to the Post.
((Pineapples are a symbol of Hospitality, so why not??? :)))

Here are the pictures:

I must be bananas or whatever...I think it's just the gamma rays they are sending out through this Forum... :ha: :ha: :ha:

Anything else I can do to encourage growth & propagation that the experts might have to help me out??

Thanks Everyone!! ~Cheryl

Give it a bit of shade, and mist it daily. The best pineapples here in Ecuador (which is part of the pineapple's original range) are shade-grown in an area that gets daily fog-ins. Certainly, when I find wild ones (which is pretty rare) they're shade creatures.

Thank You Lorax!

I have promptly moved 'Spike' back into the patio area where he can 'see' the sun most of the day & it reaches him 2 hours out of the day.
Misting will be done by hand as I am still researching(ie: looking for the best deal) on a simple misting system.

I have read that there is minimal fertilizer application required for the pineapples.
I am reading up on them...but any help will be appreciated!! Thanks All!!!

Cheryl,

When you increase the size of a pot to allow more root growth, ideally the size increase should be at least 3 inches in all directions (each side and the bottom) -- OR, the final size destination for the plant. For most pineapples, this seems to be about a 14 to 16 inch pot.

By the way, I like your potting location. Did you add any spices to the mixture? :D

Like all bromeliads, pineapples are potassium lovers just like bananas. You could feed Spike a bromeliad formula with high potassium (the NPK or three numbers on the label, the last is potassium and it should be the largest). Otherwise, if you already have a high potassium formula for your bananas, use it!

I know I'll cut the top off & replant it.
Question is...should I try & eat it?? :) ~Cheryl

Pineapples are not my expertise; but the fields I have seen (Hawaii, French Polynesia, South Florida and a few other locales) were always in full sun with no shade (as are our plants which have done well).

Wow! What a cute pineapple! Hehe, it's beautiful too!
Can you eat them grown like that?
I haven't even thought about growing a pineapple before :D Do they grow well indoors?!

Rmplmnz, commercial pineapple plantations are indeed in full sun, but the fruits end up stunted and the plants are ditched after the first crop (no ratoons on commercial pineapples) - they will grow in full sun, but they just don't do as well.
