I purchased a bloodleaf banana plant about a month ago. Recently the bottom leaves are turning yellow with dark brown edges and are severely drooping. I don't think i was watering it enough, but i recently increased the days of watering. It seems to dry out fairly quickly. There is new growth on the top and the leaf is starting to unfurl. What do you think the problem is? It gets morning sun through the front door from sun up till about 1pm or so. Is that enough direct sun? The plant it was planted with says it needs mostly shade so I am wondering why it was paired up together. I purchased the plant from Lowes. I live in Austin, TX. Thanks! I have pics, but i am not sure how to post them here yet.

pics would help, but as a banana plant grows, the bottom leaves do yellow and die.

I am not sure how to include the photos in this thread. There are 4 photos in my gallery (hecraig) are you able to view or can you tell me how to include them in my responses?

Welcome to the org- I think us Texans are starting to take over!

It looks like the petioles on your banana are actually broken. It's possible that this plant was greenhouse grown for the majority of its life prior to being taken to Lowe's. It this is the case, it will have a weaker pseudostem, petioles, and leaves, that are prone to being broken in the wind. As the plant is grown outside, it will gradually produce stronger petioles and leaves that will hold up to the wind better. You could also be experiencing a little sun burn on your leaves. Again, this would be from it being used to lower light levels inside as well.

Should i go ahead and cut the 4 leaves that are drooping downward. One of the droopy leaves is pretty crunchy. I love this plant and don't want it to die. Thanks for your help! I had one droopy leaf about a week ago and the other 3 happened within a 2 days....

yes it wouldn't hurt to cut the four bottom ones off. the plant has enough leaves to survive. good luck with the plant hope it picks up.

Prune those fronds off! Stick it outside, water it everyday!

Just a word of caution about moving it outside... put it in a place where it only gets indirect light at first (maybe the shade of a tree). Over the course of a couple of weeks, move it out into more and more sun in order to acclimate the leaves to the additional sunlight; otherwise you run the risk of burning the leaves.

That is not Zebrina, that is Rojo. :goteam:
Sorry, I had to. Beware, direct sun will damage and destroy any and all greenhouse/indoor leaves!
It's tough for a banana to photosynthesize in hot weather without leaves.
