Another angle of my CG. It underwent the winter without protection but it scorched some leaves. I heard it is one of the hardest bananas in zone 9.
The pups are new growing like crazy. But before I had 2 years of waiting before a new pup appeared. Strange creature.

Thats a nice looking plant you have. What do the banana's taste like?

bencelest
07-31-2009, 02:24 PM
Blwn: It is sweet to me unlike the one you buy at the store. It has a tinge of papaya and mango to it. It has a unique taste of its own. I like it.
Tony : I am not an expert on CG but the one you bought might have fooled you into buying it. I don't know. But who knows. Like I said it is a strange creature.
I have a 3rd generation and all are "dwarfed".
Thanks Buffy for your support.

Taylor
07-31-2009, 02:29 PM
Tony's definitely looks like a California Gold. My most vigorous is 5 to 6 foot already coming from ground level as a new pup this Spring. I highly doubt it will fruit this year because of the actual immaturity of the plant, so I suspect it will reach 7+ feet of pseudostem by the end of the growing season.

Taylor
07-31-2009, 02:31 PM
Also, I have noticed more vigor and overall larger plants as the mat has matured more and more. First year stem was at 4-5 foot at bloom. Second year: no bloom at 6 foot. This year: probably no bloom again and probably taller than the previous ones.

bencelest
07-31-2009, 02:37 PM
Tony: I concur with Taylor. I t sure looks like a CG and you might have over fertilize it too (LOL). Yours is much more vigor than mine. But don't count on it on not to flower during winter. Two of mine did. But it survived. And for sure you will have more banana fingers to expect.

Jack Daw
07-31-2009, 06:18 PM
Sweet, Taylor. Do you grab them out for winter or keep in the soil?
Would you say they are better growers in your zone than any other banana, or rather average?

bencelest
07-31-2009, 06:44 PM
Tony: I'd give my right arm to live in San Diego. Yes, now I understand why your CG bananas can grow that high. San Diego is ideal to grow tropical plants including papayas, mangoes, guavas, etc....and of course bananas. I lived in San Diego for 12 years a long long time ago. Here in my place I have to struggle with the cold and luckily CG is hardier than most bananas I have. So only part of the year I get growth.
Taylor, your bananas are amazingly healthy and beautiful.
Bo and Patty: thanks for the compliment.
Patty: Yes I did a lot of work in my backyard. I'll post those pics later including moving my pergola plat and moving my bananas and citrus.

Harvey:
When I transferred my bananas that were growing under my pergola plat most of them I thought would not make it but when the weather changed to higher temperature, they all seem to come alive. So here I am again.
But also I have many priorities before and I just got so busy.
I am just now winding down and have a little time to post.
You ought to see my backyard now Harvey. Most of it are now designed concrete and pavers and bricks. You wont recognized it since you last came over.
Thanks everybody for your concern.
I am also concern why Joe stopped posting. Perhaps he is so busy demonstrating (with) his AZ41 product . So I am not too concern. I hope he makes lots of money.

Jack, I left it in the ground. I would say it is better than any other banana (that I have tried), especially edible types. If I could get a good vigorous Basjoo or likewise in the ground, that could change as far as "Overall best".

Already working on it. :D
I wonder, whether California Gold will be able to survive our zone 7b winters (although most of them are zone 8 winters). I have serious doubts, but it's worth a try. Next year I might get to some plants, 2 years from then they will have observable mats and then I can judge. :D

Thanks a lot.
Jack:
I think CG is small enough to grow in a large pot so you can take it inside your house during the winter. With plenty of glass of course for sunshine. The average height is around 5 feet and the leaves might reach to 4 feet in height or less. But your problem might be space.
As for me I am thinking to cut all the leaves and wrap them with something like cloth or styro foam and leave them on the ground next winter . Not with my CG and dwarf Brazilian but with my other bananas.

If you knew how plant sadistic I am, you would be surprised. When I get hold of some CG, I will make sure that I will have "safe pups" that I will put in for winter, but other plants (especially, when the mats will be larger) will be tested year by year. ;)
The only problem here might be humidity and precipitaiton. I haven't seen a banana, that would be able to resist rain, frost, snow, meltdown, frost, meltdown, rain... and that's what our winters look like.

Hey, Benny, just a note about Joe: He's okay, just busy. I telephoned him last week to chat for a few minutes. Joe did post in some CRFG forums last week about him and his friend winning many medals at the California State Fair for their various fruit wines. They must have had 20-30 different ones with medals, very impressive.

bencelest
08-01-2009, 12:12 PM
Harvey:
I knew that.
He and his friends submitted 32 different wine entries and 30 earned medals for the best tasting homemade wines. And the calamondin wine took double medals and first places. It's too bad I consumed most of the wines he gave me. I should have kept it as a souvenir.
He gave me lots to taste.

I moved my pergola in this location and built concrete floors and walkways.

Mine only grows 4 1/2 feet before it sends out the flowers but if you live in San Diego at 7 feet it is still growing. So I guess it depends where you live . Also if you overfertilize and water may affect the height. Mine grows at certain part of the year only.
Also I can not answer your next question because mine took on flower about 2 years and in the middle of the winter to boot!
11 months is I think not true. Only senorita banana can do that. And that's why a lot of folks wants it so they can harvest before the frost but nobody has one. Except one guy in Florida who promised me a pup and I am still waiting.
It's got to be more than that. 18 months is a conservative estimate.

Benny,

I got a basjoo from a friend in Oregon.
She used a long, thick, 5 inch diameter cardboard tube - kind of like what architects use.
I can stand on it and it won't collapse.
Don't know where to get them, sorry, I know that doesn't help you.
She lined the leaves with newspaper & had crushed paper to support the stem & the root was moist newspaper & plastic wrapped.
They showed up with all their leaves & unscathed!

Hope this gave you some ideas! :) ~Cheryl

Maybe I'll do a little video or photo series of this tomorrow or early next week. By just cutting off the ends you can add together two boxes as is and you end up with a box that's about 6" x 8" x around 36"-40", but it's best to keep it under 1 cubic foot to safe on postage so I usually take off about 2" along the length on one side on my table saw (I often prepare many boxes at one time like this so that I have some for future use and this will give me a box that is 6" square so it's still under a cubic foot even if it's 40" long. I create new end flaps out of other boxes (usually use the box referred to as a "shirt box"). I've shipped maybe 100 chestnut roasters in such boxes and have sometimes got a funny look from someone at the Post Office as they wonder if a new box style has been introduced.

well i got that smallest of all the CG its only 12" tall and i didn't get to plant it for over 5 days so its not grown that much its put out a new leaf and I'm hopeful it will grow fine here they tend to tolerate the heat quite nicely time will tell all get a picture posted when it puts out a couple more leafs its a bit ratty looking right now the best pup i got from Scot is the double mahoi thats growing like made it was a vary Small pup with only 2" roots and i know it will survive here as mom was out side all winter

From my experience bananas tend to do very well when they planted on the ground but I am lucky my banana plants tend to survive nicely also in pots but in subdued sunlight and without wind. Like taking care of them like a baby. Neglect is a nice word. I tend to neglect them and that's how they like it. Many times they surprise me with their growth when you neglect them as if they are saying hey, you look at me now! aren't you going to take care of me now that I look pretty? Many times I get surprised when I see the soil so very dry and they still thrive.

You hit that right on the head Benny, I babied most of my plants this winter and lost most of them, last year I neglected the heck out of them, maybe check on them once every other week, and they did great all winter in an unheated three season room here in zone 5, well I moved and made a room down stairs with flourescent grow lites steady temp of 70 and watered lightly, no ferts, they did great untill March, then they all just fell over and the corms were half rotted. No more babying of the nanners for me. Tough Love from here on out. well maybe a little babying :ha:

Your right "experience IS the best teacher" I just wasn't paying much attention the first winter to lessons to be learned, I know better now though, anyhow, Benny I love the pics of your trees, they always seem to be very happy and produce tons of fruit, I have a washington navel orange tree, that I have killed six times in the last two years. Every time I trim it back to where all I have left is a stem, It just keeps on trucking and produces new limbs, I finally replanted it the end of May this year in Cocohusk chip and coir mixture following Millets description from the Citrus Growers forum, seems to be a very happy little tree with no chance of over watering ever again, again, Live and Learn :bananas_b

OK. I ate the first ripe banana shown a minute after I took the picture and I can tell you it was delicious.
I can't tell you the right taste but all I can tell you is it taste like more of a saba except a tad more sweeter and juiceier. I don't know if I should let it ripe some more but to me it is just perfect. I also don't know if it is a cooking banana or a dessert banana or both.
Is there any takers?
Saba to me is like eating a vanilla ice cream with apple and papaya combined as flavor.

Hey, Ante, that's not my house. I only wired that house for wages but I was the "master" electrician the brain. Never in a million years I can afford to buy a house like that. It was on sale for $2.9 million before the crash. Now it is probably less than half that cost so the owner/builder lost a lot of money

I took a picture of my 2 bananas that bloomed in winter. Although I lost all of the leaves, they still flowered.

Greg, did you buy Jeff Earl's pup on eBay today? The concern over the Euro maybe dropped prices a little, but still was over $100. :ha:

Hey Benny: The Calif Gold you sent me last summer is doing well. It leafed out real well over the winter. I put it in the ground a month ago. It was initially a little sunburned, but it's starting to throw leaves out at a good clip now.

My new CG has opened a new leaf! I had to cut a lot of brown off her and thought she wasn't going to make it. But I think she will now. WHEW!

I have a dwarf Orinoco that started to flower not too long ago. I was surprised it came out from nowhere. After the winter, I saw it the first time that big already.
