Hej Cowboy, I'm tired of Pisang Ceylon (to understand, please, read the thread name)... :D ;)
Not sure if they're tired of Pissing.... Uh.... Er.... Pisang Ceylons yet but has anyone heard from Chironex, Klemmthamm, or JPfloors yet? Can't help but wonder how theirs are doing.
BTW, Cold Tolerant can be a fairly relative concept. I've been growing things for 3 years that should be very marginal in Oklahoma - sometimes it's more a matter of strategy, especially in bordering zones :).

Good luck with the Pisang Ceylon (excuse the humor, I couldn't resist :)). Ya got me going now with the Texas Star, Carolina King, & Golden Rhinohorn. Searched the internet & couldn't find anything on that Amistad, though. Living in Oklahoma (my whole life, so far), I think I'll try for all 3. If I get hold of one, I'll let ya know... & where I got it.
Need to get them in the wiki, too. From what I read this afternoon, they're some great nanners... esp Texas Star... 16 degrees & came back!? Incredible!

Well yesterday I was unbagging the 2 nanners at the corners of the deck (well two of them (cause I noticed soemthing was wrong). Someone tripped over the cord of the heat-tape and unplugged them. Any how I guess my mother PC is down to under a foot versus 3.5 feet of p-stem w/ 12 of leaf. Dwarf Orinoco, and Raja Puri took a beating too. Well I think when I get done I can start a thread "Heat-tapes vs. no heat-tapes" or tall & green vs. alot of cut-off brown. Well i know the unplug effected two more so I best be off to check out the Raja, and the SDC's. @ least they are all alive thanks to the straw :^)

King Canopy 10 x 10-foot Portable Greenhouse is what I use to house my naners this winter, you can get them at Walmart Walmart.com: King Canopy 10 x 10 Greenhouse: Lawn & Garden (http://www.walmart.com/ip/King-Canopy-10-x-10-Greenhouse/2216329) but they are out of stock alot. this is where I got mine and it had free shipping King Canopy 10 x 10-foot Portable Greenhouse - Greenhouses at Potting Benches (http://www.pottingbenches.com/general/10x10greenhouse.cfm) put in a milkhouse heater and a thermostat on a drop cord from norhtern tool and it has worked like a charm set it to a low of 45 degrees and they were happy as could be.

I have 4 nanners I'm putting in the ground behind my garage, I might just have to do that or some other taller (homemade version) method depending how they grow this summer :^)

I bought a Pisang Ceylon, an Ice Cream, and a Misi Luki from Willisorchards several weeks ago, all apparently nice plants. Only now is the Misi Luki starting to seriously grow. Nothing appears to be happening with the one-leaf Ice Cream, which was the situation with the Pisang Ceylon. Then, about a week ago the Pisang Ceylon's pseudostem softened and collapsed. It looks like a fungus to me, but I saw no black on the leaves or trunk. I had a similar problem with a Grand Nain earlier this summer. I sprayed and sprayed, but nothing helped. It appeared to be rotten to the root. It had a keiki that has grown strongly, no sign of fungus, and it has a keiki of its own. I have a lot of otherwise healthy banana plants. So, what is happening?

P-stem, maybe, but the leaves will die with temperatures at 28F.

I'm talking about survival of the plant. All bananas will get damage on freezing temperatures, even Basjoo.
My point is, Pisang Ceylon will survive 28F without any protection ( for short period of time, like one night ).

south of Irvine, California, solid zone 10 (between 10a and 10b)
I had two of them. One was a tiny little pup (maybe 11 inches), the other was a 2 feet tall one that had two-thirds of its top leaf cut off. The small pup didn't make it over the first Winter but the larger one survived. After the winter it was moved from a large container into the ground and slowly grew. It doesn't seem to be the most vigorous growing, and the tips of the fronds got burnt in the sun, but it looked okay. It survived the next Winter and came out of it with only some slight wilting. By that time there were two small stalks with a total of five fronds. It didn't really look the most lush green, but it didn't look too bad either. It continued to slowly grow and survived the Winter after that too (which would be this last Winter, 2017-2018 ). It is now 6 feet high, the two stalks are thickening, and it sent up a small baby pup. Looks a bit more lush and green now than it did last year, even though there was a really hot heat wave over the Summer (it was kept well watered).
I've seen other bananas that have grown faster, grew with more vigor and looked better, but this has survived so far.
I'm always thinking about the remote possibility that maybe what I was sent wasn't actually really the correct variety, but I've tried to look carefully and all the details look consistent with other pictures of Pisang Ceylon I've looked at.
About 15 miles away from the coast, and the spot does get mostly full sun, so the sun and intense Summer heat can be difficult. (I'd say the climate is about halfway between coastal influence and desert)
