hello,
I need help with a problem plaguing some of my heliconias. I have a number of them in full sun including some pissitacorums (sp), a rostrata and a nicknersis and the new leaves are coming out very pale (almost transparent and then tend to get burned in the sun.
Has anyone else experienced this problem and know the cause? Too much sun (I am in Antigua in the Caribbean Zone 12 maybe).I water them every morning. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

could be too much water, causing root problems, or it could be a lack of nitrogen.

If they have been in the sun and not recently moved there, then I would suspect a nutrient deficiency such as nitrogen or iron. If you have just moved them to a sunny site from a more shady area, it could be leaf burn.

Mine does that too....but then they turn green..I think if they are in too much intense sun they will burn...so mine are in morning sun and partial shade for the afternoon....if it was a nitrogren deficiency you would more than likely see veining...will try and send pics soon....

Even in my area I have to keep them in partial sun or they burn.

In this current heat wave mine have been burning some too. Even my mango fruit are getting charred spots on top.

Hey T Gal - I'm close to you and I find that some of my heliconias need some protection from the midday sun - rostrata seems to need partial shade both in my garden and my neighbours' - the rest I don't know about in particular. It seems to me in general that most heliconias don't like to be toasted. Plus water on a leaf in the morning might lead to scorching - have you tried watering late afternoon? Which is what we do for all plants including orchids.
