I potted up some pineapple pups, slips, crowns for next year today. I pulled up one plant and found these tiny little pups growing under ground. I pulled em off and planted em , we'll see what happens!
Here's a few pictures

An excellent find!

I also like how your pots are mounted sideways on the stone wall. :D

Have you ever tried Kelp Extract on your pineapples? I have been misting the leafs of mine ever 10 - 14 days.

I have been expecting a pineapple to flower anytime and I know I looked at least a couple days ago--but today it was quite obvious the bloom is on the way:woohoonaner:

Ya, I've been experimenting with a few different things! So far, worm tea, kelp extract, fish emulsion, liquid humus, and some stuff a friend has been experimenting with. I'll let ya know what seems to do the best.

I've also started planting them in high mineral content beds, with added soil microbes, and such.

The original top I started with was a Dole. I twisted the top off, and then picked the bottom inch or so of leaves off the stalk--I let that dry for about 10 days. I then planted it in a large pot of composted cow manure. About 18 months later I had the first bloom--when the pineapple was ripe (it was very sweet) it sent out 4 pups--those are now starting to bloom---2 have already bloomed and I think the other 2 will within a month.

so you use composted manure any potting soil.

Ok I want a piece of the pineapple action. I to an new to the banana growing. I really loved the look of the pineapple. Some one point me in the right direction, how do I get started?

I got 4 that I started hoping to get some fruit next year...

Someone told me that there can be a male and female plant and you can tell by whether or not the edges or serrated and only the female will produce fruite. Anyone know anything about that?

Its just a different type. Think of it like this. I've never seen a serrated edges in the stores.

08-13-2009, 12:07 PM
They become serrated after they grow for a bit not from cutting the tops off. All 3 of mine have serrated edges and my step mother has 3 with serrated edges and 2 with smooth edges and they all came from the same dole pineapples...

I have a cultivar 'Largo' with serrated edges, "Costa Rica" pineapple from the shop and then there is the most delicious pineapple I've ever tasted (store bought) called "Extra sweet", also from Costa Rica. None of them, except for 'Largo' has serrated edges.
It is a cultivar issue.

They all are growing well and I hope for a few pups soon.
'Largo' also needs about 10 more months to fruiting. I had some fruit from homegrown pineapples already, but due to its unreliable fruiting in my conditions I cancelled its cultivation in my garden. Now that I read about your experience, I started growing them again.
Good luck to you all.

Cool mine has grown a lot and does not have serrated edges at all.

ya my fourth one I got from my step mother and looked like it was dead so my son pulled it out of the pot to use for something else and left it sitting on top of some bark in one of the flower beds and found it 3 days ago as I was cleaning up some beds and it had started growing a pup from the dried up dead looking mother plant...

so you use composted manure any potting soil.

The first one was potted in commercial composted cow manure alone--one of the ones taht is blooming is still in that pot. Two of the pups were potted in pure compost, but I do add a small amount of basic granular fertilizer every month or so in summer (like 10-10-10). The other pup in inground.

Yes, I tried to grow one earlier by planting the top just like it was cut off the pineapple--it just rotted. but if you let the top dry out like I described, it should grow without a problem. They do need to be protected from freezing.

I do not think that a refrigerated pineapple will make any difference, I would look for one that has a healthy looking top.

Wow! Love the pictures. I had 3 that I had grown from Dole pineapple tops but after almost 2-1/2 years none of them had flowered or fruited. The were big and kept well fertilized and looked healthy. I thought I wasn't doing something right. Anyway, lost them all when my house burnt down in April. Will have to try again. Thanks for the Wonderful pics! I'll have to try it your way.

So far from reading everyones posts I need to buy some pineapples cut off the tops, let them dry out then plant with lots of mulch. Does anyone know if these can be raised outside and left for the winter, if so what do I need to do to keep them protected? I am located in Ohio just south of Columbus. I am landscaping the back yard (even adding a hot tub) with lots of the tropical look and this would be an added to it.
Thank you for any info given.
Hugs Tania

They cannot tolerate freezing. I do put mine inside when we are expected to have a hard freeze, but just cover them with a sheet when we expect frost (low 30s). They will get almost 4 ft across before they bloom, but the containers are not that big--3 to 5 gal.

Once you have one bloom, you will get several pups that will grow a lot faster than the tops from a pineapple. I went from 1 to 4 after my first pineapple. 2 of those have now bloomed and are already putting out pups.
