Although this picture was taken 3 or 4 months ago, this is generally how my living room looks at all times of the year. This thread will be a place for me to continue to show shots of my indoor container plants, as they grow and bloom. I grow all throughout Winter too, so these peeks are just the beginning!
Here are some more recent photos I just took this week, of some of my container plants. I grow mostly all of my plants from seed...
My Musa Basjoo banana pup. My very first banana plant ever! Ohhhh, how proud I am of it! http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/garden01.gif

Nice HBL,
i've done this before in winter time. It takes dedication to water and care for them. But hey, it doesn't look friendly outside.

I care for a window full of plants, all year round, and yes, it does take dedication and effort - TONS. I love it though, so it doesn't feel like work to me.
Here's a few more peeks of some of my seed grown container plants. These are my Jalapeno peppers and my little bird 'Henry' in the background...

Also, last Sunday, I harvested a batch of Lemon Balm (my favorite herb) from my indoor seed grown plant, and hung the bundles upside down to dry....
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/DSCI0624.jpg
You know you've dried it properly, if the purple color on the undersides of the leaves begins to get richer and brighter. If the leaves turn black, they've not been dried properly and should be discarded.
Looks like my leaves are drying just perfectly...

Thanks for the great photos!
Great stuff crazy lady! My house only looks like that in winter. Whatever you do don't plant the lemon balm outdoors unless you want it all over everwhere. Trust me at least on this one(yeah right!). It's kind of like horseradish or borage. You only plant it once and spend the rest of your life pulling it out, even though it's one of my favorites.

No worries, Bob, I've been growing Lemon Balm for years, and know all about how it spreads. This is why I grow it in containers, and not in the ground, because Nettle is a known invasive spreader.
Thank you - I'm So glad you guys liked my shots. More will be posted soon, I'm sure...

Nice pics HBL. You have proved that you can grow about anything indoors to those disbelievers. I have over 140 plants that I grow indoors in winter - including citrus. Most are outside now but I was too lazy to move the ones in my west facing bay window. I also built a sunroom addition just for them LOL.
What is that sweet pepper that looks like a jalapeno? I bought what said 'sweet bell pepper' & the peppers look like that - not bell! grrrr ..it's not at all hot.
What do you do with your dried (or fresh) lemon balm?? I have some in the yard but I like lemon thyme better (oooh, the smell!)

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/beauty_flower-3.gif Thank you, Patty!
Here is exactly what I do with my fresh indoor, seed-grown, lemon balm...
It begins with hanging fresh bundles of balm upside down to dry...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/DSCI0611.jpg
As the leaves begin to dry...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/DSCI0624-1.jpg
You can really see this gorgeous purple color on the undersides of them...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/DSCI0623-1.jpg
I stuff some freshly dried leaves into a tea ball...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/DSCI0693.jpg
Then I close it up tight with the balm leaves inside...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/DSCI0694.jpg
Then I pour some boiling water over top and steep for 5 minutes...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/DSCI0696.jpg
Here is the end result - a homemade cup of freshly steeped lemon balm tea! Mmmmmmmm.

Oh the sweet pepper that looks like a Jalapeno, Patty? It's called 'Gypsy'. It says the name above the picture, if it's the one you're referring to? The fruits turn red, and are so delicious.
Yes, peppers are so wonderful to grow, both indoors and out. I usually grow mine in south windows, but east works well too. They're just so darn pretty, and fun to look at - not to mention tasty.

I have changed the name of this thread, so I could include both my indoor and outdoor plants.
Jack, I've never heard of it either, and had a hard time getting information on it. I wonder if it was mislabeled or something. The seeds do look like banana seeds, so it will be interesting to see what it turns out to be.
Yes, Patty, I was so surprised to recieve the seeds and most especially the Ylang Ylang Perfume Tree ones! I am trying to germinate some, but they take 3 months to sprout, so we'll see...

Um...
Sorry to disappoint, Jack, but I think these little guys are just minnows! Someone from another forum caught a fish for his pond and found out it was a baby big mouth bass!!!
: O
I wish!
It's only about 3 inches long right now, and it's so cute. Anyway...
I was so worried that my fish would be hungry that I got some fish food and gave it to them, but now it's turned my what was once crystal clear water, into the murky unsightliness you see before you. I am told that the murky water will not hurt the fish and so far it hasn't.
They really don't need my food anyway, because they eat the algae and floating bugs too. I am told the water will clear off in a few days. The fish eat the mesquito larvae and keep the pond clean...

These ones are hybrids and I have another color beside the white variety but it's not quite in bloom yet. The flowers will be solid purple!

Thanks Penny.
I sure love to grow a variety of plants, not just one or two types. I will show the purple African Daisy plant when it blooms. They were both grown from seed.
Unfortunately they are only annuals though, and so they won't be back next year. They're hybrids so they won't produce true seed either. I might experiment and see what I might end up with...

My new Bay Laurel plant with a 'chilly chili' hot pepper plant in front of it. Just got this second Bay tree a couple of days ago, and I tranplanted it as soon as I got it home.
This one is in our bright foyer, so the tenants can enjoy the smell and harvest a leaf once and awhile too. I have the second tree in my apartment in a very sunny window.

I have been growing this awesome houseplant for 6 years now, and the seeds are found inside the 'cherries' and I always have lots.
It is called Solanum Pseudocapsicum or 'Jerusalem Cherry' or 'Christmas Cherry'. It is a beautiful houseplant that used to be extremely popular in the 70's. If you watch old 'Three's Company' re-runs, you'll see lots of Jerusalem Cherry plants around. They are truly spectacular.
They are poisonous houseplants, but then again, so is Poinsetta and a number of others. It develops fruit throughout summer and they ripen into the Fall, and last well into Winter. An extremely ornamental plant, that is very charming to have around.
Here are my three seed-grown JC's that are full of pretty balls. I have one in my living room window, one in my kitchen window, and one in my bathroom window. I positioned them altogether, so I could get a shot of all three plants. It's a dark, rainy day, so the pics aren't as clear as I would have like, but here they are...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/DSCI1162.jpg
This shot shows the blossoms up close. When they die and fall, they leave behind a green 'cherry' that grow and ripens through shades of yellow, orange, and red. So pretty.

This is my geranium that I grew from seed, in my living room window. It has been blooming for 7 months straight!
Over time, geraniums lose their old leaves and want to grow new ones. Even though my plant might not look super full at the present, wait until you see it in a month when all the new leaves that are growing have got bigger and filled in.
I have been growing geraniums indoors all year round, for many years, and can keep them blooming non-stop. They are one of my most favorite flowers...

This is my new 25-30' garden that I just cut out recently, to prepare for next Spring.
Keep in mind that it is just the bare basics right now, and most of the weeds haven't even been removed from between the fences yet. I think it is really too late in the season to care, and I will likely just let them die off, and then easily pull all the seedlings that emerge in Spring.
Cutting out this garden really brought all my smaller gardens together. I also just bought 160 tulip bulbs that I am going to bury along this new garden, very shortly. I am so excited. I haven't done any soil amendments just yet, but I will before I bury the bulbs.
Anyway, here it is...

Look in my gallery and try to find the Brugmansia gallery or just under Yard Shots or something. Not sure exactly where it is. I had one in a 3 or 5 gal. container bloom relatively frequently, but they do better in the ground (like most things). Almost takes a tree-like form in a pot.

My Plumeria is a deep pink. The blossoms start out looking like peppermints pink and white stripe almost before they open and when they do they are a beautiful pink, will try to take a pic and post if I can. This is the hardest website to post pictures to, I follow all the directions and am having no luck. The new picture in my avatar is now what it looks like outside this morning!:coldbanana:

Oh your Plumeria sounds gorgeous! Can't wait to see it - just not in this thread unfortunately. I created this thread to look like a sort of 'photo album' of all my on-going plants and flowers. I look forward to seeing it though.
Wow, you have snow already?!!! Ours is coming soon, so I shouldn't be all that surprised really. We had frost last night, and my morning glory vines are dead today!

That is a beautiful plant, isn't it a succulent? OMG I want one! I am in love with textured plants like this, perfect for a full-length windowsill box planter. To be quite honest though, I am totally jealous of your ability to grow pretty much ANYthing. Were you born with this talent, or did you pick it up :P

Yes, Moonboy - it is a succulent, called "Burrito". It is the baby version of "Burro's Tail". Someone mailed some cuttings to me from the States and this is what they are growing into.
Here's another shot I took of it this morning...

Also Moonboy, I have over 30 gardening books that I've been studying for over 6 years, in my own personal time. I eat, sleep, and drink plants, if this is any indication of my obsession. Thanks for your comments.

Thanks Penny!
Of course you know that some Beautyberry cuttings will be yours in Spring. Do you know I ordered this shrub (actually I have two) from Prince Edward Island as a gift for my mom's garden? When she moved here, I brought the shrubs with me, and planted them in the ground here. These babies have travelled.
The other shrub is a bit smaller, but it was heavily pruned so it should fill out next year. The berries last into Winter but the leaves fall off. It really is a pretty shrub. The cuttings root easily.

Wow you have such cool plants. Henry is a sweet heart. I do have 2 parakeets but they do not talk. I wish they were.
Where did you get the Herrenhauser Garten brugmansia cuttings ? I want one.
The peppers are cool too. I like the purple one.
The Hollyberry Lady
10-30-2009, 09:18 AM
Got them from a friend in Cleveland, Ohio. I am pretty excited to see how they all turn out.
Thank you, Yes, I heard that parakeets kept together will not talk as much or at all. Henry has only me, and so he talks to impress me (his flock).
His vocabulary is extensive, and he will even attempt to say something new within a few hours of hearing it, if it is repeated regularily. He is quite amazing.

I'm really not too worried though, because Bob tells me it's quite fragrant. This is also the very first bloom, so we'll see when more open...

I agree Patty, its like going to a greenhouse with homemade personality to see these plants. Hollyberry, I would love to try my hand at growing a JRM if you should find you have any extra seeds, will gladly pay for them. I just haven't seen any of this particular variety around here anywhere and I love them! :waving:

Joan, I would give you some maple seeds for free - a true gardener shares and doesn't charge money. Actually, charging for my stuff makes me cringe.
: (
So yes, have a look around your own neighborhood and get a look at some red maples you really like. When it's the right time, return to the area and no doubt they'll be seeds blown around everywhere on the ground.
They really are easy to come by. I saw tons on my bike ride last evening from huge red maple trees. I like the dwarf kinds though even if they don't produce true to the parent tree.
My seedlings above came from seeds were collected from a Weeping Crimson Queen beauty.

I find them tough too Howard, even growing them from seed. The seedlings are very fragile and spindly at first. I use a mild starter formula to get them going. They can be doing just great then all of sudden die without warning. They are also extremely prone to spider mites so the small plants must be kept showered nearly daily indoors.
I just recently sprouted some more seeds, but here's is my best seedling you can see in this shot I just took today...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/DSCI2854.jpg
It's thriving, but it could be dead in two days from now! This is how sensitive they are. Although the pic doesn't give the true effect, the leaves are actually a bluish/green color and quite unique. I can't wait to see the blooms. I just hope it continues to do well when I put it outside in the garden...
