Well, call the guys in the white coats...

I've officially gone overboard...

It all started when...

I ordered 3 Dwarf Orinoco's on a whim....

The week after they started doing well & Lowe's ran a clearance sale...add 2 Grand Nains & 2 Dwarf Cavendish with pups...

Then I got the Dwarf Namwahs...

Went back to Lowe's to get peat & they had a lonely Little Prince...((Sigh))...

Found a great buy online...2 Double Mahoi and an Ice Cream later...
(they arrived yesterday :D)

Now I am waiting for my M. Dasycarpa and M. Violacea seeds to get here...

AND THEN there's Scot's Banana Auction....AUGHHHHHH!!!!!

MAKE IT STOP!! MAKE IT STOP!!!

They are coming to take me away HA-HA, they are coming to take me away HO HO HEE HEE HA HA......

LOL...the dreaded banana addiction. I guarantee I'd have soooooo many more bananas if I had more space. Currently I have 5 naners and I live in a single room (with my 'stolen' area on the roof outside my windows). It's gonna get crowded in here this winter when I bring em all inside! I've been doing well recently on not giving in to my urges, but I still have them a lot!

wait until you develop an addiction for variegated bananas!

Cheryl,

I know how you feel. Three days from now is my one month anniversary at bananas.org, and I have one nana in the ground and 7 in pots. Now I am trying to put things together to get me 'starter' greenhouse in before winter...instead of waiting until next summer as I was going to.

at least I know that I am going bananas in good company.

I think I was much better off before when I was ignorant about bananas. The time when a 'banana plant' was only one species. That was when I didn't have the desire to increase my collection. The moment I found out there were so many different/cool types was the beginning of my decline into the dark depths of banana addiction.

We should start a Banana's Anonymous support group to help recovering 'nanacaholics.' LOL :ha:

During the 4 years I lived at home when growing my plants, I once counted I had about 50 different varieties and 70 total banana plants at my peak. I also counted that I had about 300 banana plants in total over the years, I was always getting things in and sending things out, propagating and either trading or selling. The great part is, once you reach a certain critical mass of plants, you don't really have to buy anymore (unless its something really rare or unique). You can propagate your own and trade with others. After the first 2 years, I scarcely purchased any plants.

I'm no where near as bad off as you yet. I suspect that it's because I know I will have to over winter them somewhere. It's 1 Truly Tiny and 2 Dwarf Orinocos still in the mail.

I will just have to answer for my 105 M. Dasycarpa seeds when they arrive and if they sprout. My mother wants one, so that leaves 104. If they sprout. My last efforts with banana seeds were 5 seeds/0 sprouts in 5 years watching.

Well, it's probably only a matter of time then before the addiction sets in. I too once had control over my naner addiction....but if you play with fire long enough, you get burnt!

Yes. I read above that you will be in cramped quarters for the winter. Banana room only.

I should talk, though. I have pheasants are in my bathroom for the next month or so.

Fortunately I reaches what Gabe called "critical mass" a while back .... and still can't resist looking for a few more. I even had to give quite a few away so I could best take care of what I have now....... still looking for a gros michel though......more on that later..... something may or may not be in the works, depends on the mood of some Hawaiian.

Not at all, here's the deal. I finally after many many hours (the past month or so) found a source of " Bluefields" aka Gros Michel near Hilo. Saturday I asked about availability and at first no problem "How many do you want?" Then after I mentioned I was in NJ I got "I'll have to check, what are you going to do with them in New Jersey?" so after waiting(very impatiently) for a couple days and emailed back to see if there was a problem. I "happened" ahem, to mention I was active in the IBS as well. This morning I got an email back that this variety was growing on his ex business partner's( who it was also an ex spouse from what I got out of it) property and that he was going away for a week but, would definitely get back to me by the beginning of August and that he fully intends to ship them. That's where it's at. Hopefully by next year I'll have pups to spare for all and maybe have eaten one(bunch). With luck the next post on these will contain pictures.:ha:

The trouble with bananas is that there's no cross-pollination to worry about so it's just too easy to start adding more and more varieties to your collection. I live on several acres and today I was clearing brush to make room for more bananas. Ae Ae is pretty but words can't describe how my soul yearns for a Big Mike...

I have a confession. I was in Lowes garden center and I saw a display of banana plants. Here, in Western North Carolina. They were M. Zebrina and Dwarf Cavendish. I...I... *gasps* I passed on them.

I think it's because I'm trying to sprout 105 M. Dasycarpa seeds. Keep your fingers crossed that I get a low germination rate, or I'll be wall to wall bananas.

OMG, you obviously have some sort of banana developmental delay.Immediately run out and get the Zebrina. Then you can debate on the DC until next week. :02:

neferset
07-31-2009, 10:18 AM
If I admit that, had they had a nice selection of basjoo, I'd have a small stand facing the bamboo right now...

They labelled the DC as "Cold Hardy" though. I think that alone shocked me into laughter and might have broken the spell. When I lived in Gainesville, FL, I had one near the gate of my marginally protected courtyard. In that courtyard, I successfully overwintered tomatoes and hot peppers for a second year of production (a third year was pushing it and lead to some interesting diseases), but my DC was reduced to a poor re-annual.

The Zebrina...My guy is going under the impression that we might, with plenty of patience, eventually get a small bunch of bananas that will make everything worth while. Though he'd have happily bought me a banana tree (and he offered), I couldn't shake his beliefs by bringing home a purely ornamental. Even the Truly Tiny has a glimmer of hope if you read the add copy. (Though, the realist in me bought Dwarf Orinocos too.)

Yeah, I might have to have that DC. It's about 2 ft at the pseudostem already and only costs $13. I sure couldn't get it shipped for that.

We had to go back to Lowes for some odds and ends. I glanced at the bananas on the way through to fence materials. There were a lot fewer plants than last weekend. One of them had put itself on two for one sale by pupping. Soooo...

I have a Dwarf Cavendish and pup on my front porch along with the two Dwarf Orinocos and the Truly Tiny in the metal hanging basket.
